The Best of the Song BooksThe Best of the Song Books by Ella Fitzgerald
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.00
Such a pure voice, with just a touch of smokiness. The phrasing is so tender, and the accent perfectly American. This is classic popular music from the 1950s. She was not that swingy or bluesy on the songbooks recordings, so the actual songs really shine through. Ella's range is wide, and she sounds good at the deepest and highest registers. She doesn't just squawk it out to prove she can.
Sarah Vaughan W/ Clifford BrownSarah Vaughan W/ Clifford Brown by Sarah Vaughan and Clifford Brown
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.71
Sarah has the same touch with vibrato as Ella, but she lets herself wallow more in the blues. Her vocal inflection is a bit more...working class somehow, although seh has that Sassy English put-on. If Ella is sober as a judge, Sassy is on her second Martini.
SongbirdSongbird by Eva Cassidy
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $5.97
There is such a range of contrast here and dynamic range: From that breathy, barely-pushing-it-out, to an almost overdone piercing bird-like call. And that mirrors the emotions she projects: Utter calm to critical danger
HungerHunger by Janis Ian
Buy used from: $0.49
So fragile. Not much volume, but a sensitive, desperately broken soul, if you like that kind of thing.
Back to BlackBack to Black by Amy Winehouse
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.79
I know...How could I go there?! But her perfect phrasing, and that overdone Motown affect is just so tasty. Amy has true song-writing talent so that puts her over the edge. I think she would be better served by more natural production.
Bachelor No. 2Bachelor No. 2 by Aimee Mann
Buy used from: $3.00
Lovely songs, with a somewhat trippy, lazy, nasal voice.
LionheartLionheart by Kate Bush
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.94
Kate Bush pushed the boundaries of what people would agree to listen to. Quite a wild swooper. But you have to appreciate the experimentalism.
Aretha's BestAretha's Best by Aretha Franklin
Buy new: $10.97 / Used from: $4.99
Aretha can really belt it out, and still stay clean.
Lady Day: The Best of Billie HolidayLady Day: The Best of Billie Holiday by Billie Holiday
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.97
All that note-bending is not for everybody. But she really does make it work sometimes.
