![]() | Roman Holiday (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $2.77 Wyler Masterpiece.
This may be the most overlooked classic romance film in cinema. Audrey Hepburn's debut as a leading lady has to rank among the best and most mature for young actresses; it may be her best performance. A wonderful script by one of the Hollywood 10, Dalton Trumbo, and an unforgettable Roman setting combine to form a wonderful romantic mood.

![]() | Mrs. Miniver
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.75 Wyler Great Work.
Produced during the second world war, this film could have easily have been nothing more than a pro-britain propoganda film. William Wyler made it so much more than that. It also propelled Greer Garson to brief stardom and was the commercial success of 1942.
|
![]() | The Best Years of Our Lives
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.97 Wyler Great Work.
A realistic and poignant look at returning soldiers and their lives, post WWII, this film was the best film about the way war affects soldiers ever created. Harold Russel, a real life amputee and war veteran, is terrific in this film and became the only man to win 2 academy awards for the same role.
|
![]() | The Children's Hour
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $6.26 Underrated Wyler Film.
This film is known more for its groundbreaking role of discussing homosexuality, but the acting prowess of both Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine. Hepburn was a favorite of Wyler, and he directed some of her best films. He certainly gets a great performance from her as the melancholy school teacher here.
|
![]() | Pulp Fiction (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.46 Tarantino Masterpiece.
There is no argument here, this is far and away Tarantino's best work. This film has to stand as one of the top handful of films made since 1990. The dialogue in the film is a benchmark for natural conversation in movies. The non-sequential chronology has turned many people off, but is really key to the plot of the film.
|
![]() | Reservoir Dogs - (Mr. Blond) 10th Anniversary Special Limited Edition
Buy used from: $0.99 Tarantino Great Work.
Screenwriting creativity sets this low budget crime flick apart from many others. Like most Tarantino films, dialogue is interesting and flows naturally (although it set a record at the time for use of the f-bomb). It is also the first heist film to never show the heist. It doesn't feature as many fine actors as "Pulp Fiction," but is supported by a strong cast.
|
![]() | Kill Bill - Volume One
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.97 Tarantino Great Work.
An homage to 1950's samurai and kung-fu movies, this film is carried by Uma Thurman. Many elements work here, the soundtrack, cinematography (the decision to go to a black & white camera during fight scenes was terrific,) and choreography. The graphic violence is over the top, but then again, that's the point.
|
![]() | Sin City - Unrated (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $5.67 Underrated Tarantino Film.
Although Tarantino did not direct the entire film in it's entirety, he made the most of the segment he had. His segment of the movie contained all the elements associated with a Tarantino flick, dialogue, violence, and character development. The film is also a testament to the collaborative efforts of Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez.
|
![]() | My Fair Lady (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $12.50 Cukor Masterpiece.
As George Cukor was winding down his career, he hit the jackpot with "My Fair Lady." A remake of pygmallion, Cukor did wonders transforming Audrey Hepburn's cockney English riffraff into the sophisticated cosmopolite. One of but a few musicals to remain popular today, it connected with audiences and had human quality to it.
|
![]() | The Philadelphia Story
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.95 Cukor Great Work.
Much of Cukor's brilliance here is achieved through the plethora of A-list actors at his disposal. Cary Grant, Jimmy Stewart, and Katherine Hepburn are all at their comedic best; Grant as suave as ever. One of the pure classic studio comedies, the film was pretty much by the book, but was well done.
|
![]() | Holiday
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.93 Cukor Great Work.
Katherine Hepburn plays opposite Cary Grant as an unconventional, independent heiress. This comedy sees Grant mature from a lovable playboy into a good match for the intellectual and independent Hepburn. Really, its just a well done romantic comedy.
|
![]() | Gaslight
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $6.91 Underrated Cukor Film.
This film drifts in between suspense/thriller and melodrama. Cukor combines the score, with creative shots and fantastic acting from Ingrid Bergman to give the film a sense of suspense and impending doom. Charles Boyer is sinister as the villainous husband; Joseph Cotton and Dame May Whitty also support the cast, while Angela Lansbury shines as the disrespectful maid.
|
![]() | The Good, the Bad & the Ugly (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.68 Leone Masterpiece.
Maybe the greatest Western ever made. Clint Eastwood gives a masterful performance, but the real star of the movie is Eli Wallach, who stars as the money hungry Mexican bandit, scrounging for lost gold. Ennio Morricone's score is unforgettable, and builds to an unforgettable climax in the graveyard.
|
![]() | Once Upon a Time in the West
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $2.45 Leone Great Work.
This could easily have been Leone's masterpiece, and is nearly as good as "The good, the bad, and the ugly." Another spaghetti western that shines, "Once upon a time" is basically a an old fashioned, good vs. evil film. It also contains a memorable score.
|
![]() | For a Few Dollars More (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.47 Leone Great Work.
Another classic Leone spaghetti western, Clint Eastwood once again shines. It is difficult to determine whether Eastwood influenced Leone's work or vice versa, but their combination just works. Bounty hunters dominate the film, each surrounded by mystery.
|
![]() | A Fistful of Dollars (2-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.99 Underrated Leone Film.
This film saw the first appearance of the man with no name, and the creation of one of the most memorable characters in all Westerns. Although its sequels were better quality, this film really set the tone. A decent remake itself (the script was taken from Kurosawa's Yojimbo), the first installment often gets overlooked.
|
![]() | City Lights (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $47.99 Chaplin Masterpiece.
The tramp is at his very best in "City Lights." The film moves beyond the Chaplin's usual humorous antics, and presents the tramp in a very humanizing, sympathetic light. His relationship with the flower girl, and the ending reunion of the two is heartwarming. Virginia Cherrill, once the wife of Cary Grant, gives a wonderful debut performance.
|
![]() | Modern Times (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $24.99 Chaplin Great Work.
Maybe the funniest of Chaplin's films. Chaplin takes the quirks of industrial society and squeezes every laugh out of it. "Modern Times" was really the movie that put Chaplin back in the limelight after talkies had taken over.
|
![]() | The Great Dictator (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $25.97 Chaplin Great Work.
Chaplin's answer to the horrors of Nazi Germany was this take on the old Prince and the Pauper case of mistaken identity. In an obvious spoof of Adolph Hitler, Chaplin performs as a body double for the great dictator, and manages to find himself in charge. The new dictator of Tomania is a lot less serious than the man he was spoofing.
|
![]() | The Gold Rush (2 Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $19.47 Underrated Chaplin Film.
This is the classic example of Chaplin's silent works. Stuck in a cabin in Alaska, Chaplin fends off all sorts of natural hazards he hadn't counted on. His run in with the bear is comedy genius.
|
![]() | Singin' in the Rain (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.90 Donen Masterpiece.
Although this is not my favorite of Stanley Donen's work, but it is his best. Gene Kelly is at his best, dancing and singing throughout the film, which centers around a film company's transition to talkies. Debbie Reynolds gives a decent performance in one of her first starring roles.
|
![]() | Charade: The Criterion Collection (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $14.10 Donen Great Work.
By far, my favorite of Donen's work, Charade is a classic Melodrama/Suspence film. A memorable opening credit sequence, a script full of twists and turns, and the lone combination of two of the very best, Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant make this film a delight. It's a shame that this film is not considered one of the great masterpieces of cinema.
|
![]() | The Pajama Game
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.85 Donen Great Work.
Another fine Donen musical, this broadway adaptation works on the silver screen as well. One of Doris Day's better movies, especially among musicals, it is funnier than expected. The script is very good and stands as one of the best broadway to film adaptations ever.
|
![]() | Two for the Road
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $6.48 Underrated Donen Film.
This romance flick is mostly noted for its harsh reality. The two main characters, Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney give mature performances showing the truth of love and marriage. Mixed amongst trips in France, their love is chronicled from its infancy, to marriage, to parenthood, affairs, and the mutual respect of soulmates.
|
![]() | M. Hulot's Holiday - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $16.95 Tati Masterpiece.
You cannot watch this film without becoming nastalgic for a favorite vacation spot. Tati's Hulot manages to bring laughs to a mostly silent film with brilliant physical comedy. Hulot bungles around amongst many different holiday-goers, each a detached portrait, on vacation. Revisiting this film is like returning every year to a favorite resort.
|
![]() | Mon Oncle - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $17.95 Tati Great Work.
Tati scores again with his Hulot character. Once again, physical comedy and Hulot's rather eccentric personality mark this laughfest. Hulot cannot quiet cope with the fast-paced world of his sister, but remains the simplistic, inquisitive, provincial Frenchman.
|
![]() | Playtime - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $16.80 Tati Great Work.
Mr. Hulot once again finds himself mixed amongst a confusing and busy world, and unable to keep up. Tati's Hulot films should not be viewed as individual installments, but rather as sections of a larger piece of work. Although "M. Hulot's Holiday" is the best of the collection, each Hulot piece pulls its weight.
|
![]() | Jour De Fete (Holiday) (Big Day) [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Australia ]
Buy used from: $28.99 Underrated Tati Film.
This time, Tati directs and plays Francois, the postman in a small community. Oblivious to the ridicule of his neighbors, Francois is introduced into a comedy movie about mail delivery and decides to test out the new techniques he's learned. Like most Tati films, there is very little dialogue, but with Tati's own physical comedy you don't need it.
|
![]() | The Maltese Falcon Three-Disc Special Edition (1941 & 1931 versions / Satan Met a Lady)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $11.11 Huston Masterpiece.
John Huston's directorial debut is undoubtedly among the best starts to a career in history. The film is a benchmark for film noirs, and really cemented Humphrey Bogart's stardom. Extremely stylized, Huston combines witty dialogue, mystery, intrigue, and a femme fatale to make the best film noir ever.
|
![]() | Key Largo (Keepcase)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $6.94 Huston Great Work.
Once again, Huston makes a fine film noir. Bogie is as dark and dour as ever, as he faces off against mobsters amidst a hurricane in Key Largo. Edward G. Robinson, Lionel Barrymore, and a young Lauren Bacall provide a terrific supporting cast.
|
![]() | The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $9.59 Underrated Huston Film.
This is one of the greatest films ever made to receive little fanfare. Once again, Bogart stars as the panhandler that finds gold alongside an old prospector in the Sierra Madre. The deepest, darkest parts of human nature are brought out as the prospectors have to fend off Mexican bandits and even themselves to protect their gold.
|
![]() | Citizen Kane (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.84 Welles Masterpiece.
The first full-length picture directed by Orson Welles was quite a memorable one. Nostalgic flashbacks and first person accounts tell the tale of Charles Foster Kane, a man of many titles, but mostly a man. The first use of deep-focus photography also ushered in a new era in cinema. AFI ranks this as the greatest film of all time and its hard to argue with them.
|
![]() | Touch of Evil (Restored to Orson Welles' Vision)
Buy used from: $3.45 Welles Great Work.
An often overlooked Welles masterpiece, "touch of evil" is a classic film noir and crime picture. Charlton Heston is fantastic as Mike Vargas and Janet Leigh gives a strong supporting performance. Rarely mentioned among the best today, this is a forgotten masterpiece.
|
![]() | The Golden Honeymoon
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $10.77 Welles Great Work.
One of the only shorts on this list, its is really worth it. Welles stars himself and brings the emotion and charisma he is known for. Unfortunately it is difficult to find this treasure.
|
![]() | Orson Welles' The Trial
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $4.75 Underrated Welles Film.
A layered mystery, "The Trial" sees one of the few triumphant returns of Anthony Perkins post "Psycho." The film itself is very Kafkaesque, well because, Kafka wrote it. Welles himself gives a standout performance.
|
![]() | Lawrence of Arabia (Collector's Edition, 2 discs) - DVD
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $12.40 Lean Masterpiece.
David Lean tells the epic tale of T. E. Lawrence, aka Lawrence of Arabia. The scenery, score, and acting (especially Peter O'Toole who was deserving of the best actor oscar) are some of the best ever. Alec Guiness and Omar Sharif give notable performances, but can't quite match O'Toole's masterful work.
|
![]() | The Bridge on the River Kwai
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.26 Lean Great Work.
Not the average war movie, Lean nevertheless manages to capture the reality of P.O.W. camps and the horrors of war. Alec Guiness also shines as an ever maddening colonel whose obsession with building the bridge is chronicled. If it wasn't for "Lawrence of Arabia," this could easily make Lean's career.
|
![]() | Brief Encounter - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $17.83 Lean Great Work.
Lean manages to lend empathy to a woman lusting for an adulterous relationship. What could have easily been a simple story of an impossible romance manages to be much more as a once in a lifetime chance fling with a stranger in a train station. Trevor Howard gives a grand performance and Stanley Holloway provides his experience.
|
![]() | Summertime - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.99 Underrated Lean Film.
This forgotton treasure was given a second chance when Criterion re-released the film a few years ago. A more light-hearted, carefree movie than Lean usually directed, Summertime is just a good romance set in Italy. Katherine Hepburn plays lonely Jane, and gives her usual performance. This is certainly not the best Lean ever directed, but it can stand next to his best.
