Verve Jazz Masters 53: Bossa NovaVerve Jazz Masters 53: Bossa Nova by Stan Getz
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.12
At lounge's heigth in the early 60s, Stan Getz's sax brought Brazilian bossa nova composer/musicians Antonio Jobim, Luiz Bonfa, & Laurindo Almeida to the attention of Americans. Although their original CDs are available, some of their best is here, along with Charlie Byrd and a heavy dose of guitarist Joao Gilberto & singer wife Astrud. Getz is my all-time favorite musician.
Greatest HitsGreatest Hits by Henry Mancini
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $4.90
I love Mancini. This one is really the closest to a perfect overview of his popular faire, including the original soundtrack songs, from the BEST chorus ever: 'Days of Wine and Roses', 'Charade', 'Dear Heart', 'The Sweetheart Tree'(the BEST part of the film "The Great Race"), & 'Two for the Road'. This IS the freshest sound of the early 60s.
Judy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary EditionJudy At Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition by Judy Garland
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.99
Judy does the Dietrich cabaret one-woman show, but better than any one woman ever! The 2CD 40th Anniversary release sounds fantastic for a live performance, remastered in 24-bit sound! Besides her popular MGM stuff and beautiful odes to Gershwin, Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, (et al), Judy also gets into jazz and latin rhythms...as well as comedy!
Definitive George ShearingDefinitive George Shearing by George Shearing
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.75
The father of 'cocktail-lounge piano', this Brit is easily the best of it, popularizing the piano/vibraphone combo that became synonymous with this sound. This IS the 'definitive' cocktail hour for him. Several pieces offer the popular latin touch of the day and others are taken from his collaborations with the top jazz singers of the day.
Capitol Collectors Series: Louis PrimaCapitol Collectors Series: Louis Prima by Louis Prima
Buy new: $12.98 / Used from: $1.49
Prima is a must for any serious lounge enthusiast. Again, although there are other CDs out there, this one's really good. Louis gives his own unique, and jazzy, spin on 'Buona Sera', 'Oh Marie', 'Baby Won't You Please Come Home', 'Pennies from Heaven', and others, with dynamic backup from singing partner Keely Smith. It is said that there was no 'vegas lounge' without Prima.
Coltrane for LoversColtrane for Lovers by John Coltrane
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $2.47
Coltrane released a few 'ballads' albums in the early 60s, taking a step back from his modern jazz following that he had popularized in the 50s. I actually prefer his 60s releases, that offer proof of what may be the sweetest 'singing' ever to come from a sax. This offers much of the best of these albums, along with 'Ballads', listed below.
BalladsBallads by John Coltrane Quartet
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $4.89
This is the copy I own, but the 'Deluxe Edition' may be a better release, although this one sounds good. Not sure. However, this was one of my very first jazz CDs, having heard one of these Coltrane 'ballads' on a late night radio jazz station. I love this album as much as the other Coltrane above.
After Midnight: The Complete SessionAfter Midnight: The Complete Session by Nat King Cole Trio
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.79
I found this on npr.org, under the 'Basic Jazz Library', some years ago, where radio excerpts of jazz programs can be downloaded. This is not only THE reunion of the famous Nat King Cole Trio, but the 'King' @ his jazziest. All are great here, but my favs include 'Blame It on My Youth', 'The Lonely One', and 'Don't Let It Go To Your Head'.
The Pink PantherThe Pink Panther
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.53
Besides Lerner & Lowe's "Gigi", this would have to be my favorite soundtrack, just because its 60s hipness makes it such a pleasure. At the heigth of the classic lounge age, Mancini offers several forms here, including martini lounge, his famous parisian style-with accordion(which became a mainstay in the 'Pink Panther' films), and songs sung by his fabulous chorus.
Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 17: Bongo LandUltra-Lounge, Vol. 17: Bongo Land by Various Artists
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.00
This is the kind of cool bongo that would be found in a martini lounge, offered by greats Jack Costanzo, Les Baxter, et al. One of the most energetic and fun albums I own.
Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 2: Mambo FeverUltra-Lounge, Vol. 2: Mambo Fever by Various Artists
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.95
The latin sounds of lounge have never been so good. I love this one, although I'm going to try the 'Ultra-Lounge: Cha-Cha' release also, which sounds like it may be even better. Another artist worth looking up is Cal Tjader, a lounge vibraphonist who led a full percussion group.
Baxter's BestBaxter's Best by Les Baxter
Buy used from: $14.15
First, either locate this in a used CD store(as I did, for $13) or just get 'Best of Les Baxter', which is only missing 'Never on Sunday'. Either of these offer the best of Baxter's non-exotica 'chorus ala Conniff'/space age bachelor pad sound, which is my fav Baxter style. Although the Conniff style may seem somewhat cheesy, this would be the BEST of the type.
Fellini & RotaFellini & Rota
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $15.00
Offering pretty much the potpourri of keyboard sounds, this makes for cool lounge. Nino Rota's collaboration with famed Italian neo-realist filmmaker Federico Fellini was one of mutual passions. Fellini, having loved the circus, had Rota consistantly include such a feel to most of their soundtracks. Rota's music is @ once vibrant and jazzy, then suddenly terribly heartbreaking.
What The World Needs Now: Stan Getz Plays The Burt Bacharach SongbookWhat The World Needs Now: Stan Getz Plays The Burt Bacharach Songbook by Stan Getz
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $5.74
At the end of the classic lounge period, Getz plays some of the best of Bacharach-and soft lounge was never as cool(although the CD 'Wave' by Antonio Jobim sounds pretty close). Getz's interpretation of 'The Look of Love' gives my goosebumps goosebumps.
Taboo: The Exotic Sounds of Arthur LymanTaboo: The Exotic Sounds of Arthur Lyman by Arthur Lyman
Buy used from: $24.99
I got this one for a friend. As much as I LOVE tiki decor, I'm not really into the 'exotica' music. However, Lyman was more than just 'crashing waves' and birdcalls. This is as cool as a tiki album gets.
Sarah for LoversSarah for Lovers by Sarah Vaughan
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $1.47
Vaughan, one of THE greatest jazz singers ever(Ella Fitzgerald stated that Vaughan was THE best), has an inexhaustible amount of releases out there, but this one, along with the VERY lounge 'Sarah Sings Soulfully'(a mid-60s live set and easily one of her greatest recordings) are the 2 that fit in best here. Where this one is quite calm, the latter is more energetic(& possibly better).
Dinah Washington's Finest HourDinah Washington's Finest Hour by Dinah Washington
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.90
Along with Vaughan, Washington has several releases to her name, mostly all quite good, but this is easily one of those top 'Best of...' albums, touching on latin, R&B, and blues, as well as jazz. Washington's songs are not only alive but very topical, both by style and words, offering the listener a map of the era.
Nancy Wilson/Cannonball AdderleyNancy Wilson/Cannonball Adderley by Nancy Wilson w
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.00
Npr.org never steered me wrong in my early days of collecting jazz CDs. Recorded @ the peak of classic lounge, this is Ms.Wilson's best album of this style. Like Washington, she offers flexibility in music genre, as well. Adderley's chops play a mean sax, only making this one of the most perfect jazz collaborations.
Wes Montgomery's Finest HourWes Montgomery's Finest Hour by Wes Montgomery
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.18
The best jazz guitarist I've heard. This is just a great album of light, romantic jazz, but, personally, I love to listen to it in the car or on a quiet night at home. There are several good cuts here but I think my favorites are 'Goin' Out of My Head' & 'Shadow of Your Smile'(one of my all-time favorite songs).
Goldsinger: The Best of Shirley BasseyGoldsinger: The Best of Shirley Bassey by Shirley Bassey
Buy used from: $1.43
An early remastering of this cabaret singer's 'Best of...', this one sounds pretty darn good, including both the Single and Stereo versions of her famous James Bond 'Goldfinger', as well as the openers to the films "Diamonds are Forever" and "Moonraker". However, several of her songs here, from both musicals and films, are just as solid.
Ultra-Lounge, Vol. 6: RhapsodesiaUltra-Lounge, Vol. 6: Rhapsodesia by Various Artists
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.50
Referred to as 'that cool-down record for ending a party', this one's actually a bit too snappy for me to dare try that. This one's just a good lounge compilation, as 'Ultra Lounge: Bottoms Up' sounds, as well(going to get that one next). Perhaps Wes Montgomery(found above) may be a better candidate for the ole' "cool down".
The Best of Martin Denny's ExoticaThe Best of Martin Denny's Exotica by Martin Denny
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $5.75
As I mentioned above, I am not an 'exotica' lounge lover-and Denny, although easily the most popular candidate of this genre, is a bit of a novelty act. However, this compilation only takes from his best work. Fair warning, though, that this is the one album on this list that I haven't actually heard in its entirety. So, don't just take my word for it.
