Moving PicturesMoving Pictures by Rush
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.98
I first heard this album when I was in 9th grade. It was the coolest rock music I had ever heard. From that point, Rush became my all-time favorite band. Moving Picture remains 1st choice, but really any of their albums are excellent! Their latest release is: Snakes and Arrows (2007).
The Joshua TreeThe Joshua Tree by U2
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.54
I discovered U2 in 1984, thanks to MTV. They are the iconic rock band for my generation. All their albums are great, including their latest: No Line On The Horizon (2009).
Nomads Indians SaintsNomads Indians Saints by Indigo Girls
Buy used from: $0.01
Discovered them from an article in a college newspaper in the early 90's. Have been a fan ever since. I consider them the best songwriters in America today. They keep getting better. Their latest release is Poseidon and the Bitter Bug (2009)
Let It Be (Remastered)Let It Be (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $8.09
My dad used to listen to this on vinyl back in the 70's. And boy did it sound good in analog! To this day, this is still my favorite. The Beatles are legendary. Status:Retired
Diesel and DustDiesel and Dust by Midnight Oil
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.99
I saw this band live on a beautiful summer evening in 1993 at an outdoor venue in Cleveland. It remains for me one of the best live performances I've ever seen. This is the release that most people know them for, but I have all their albums. Status:Retired
Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a MemoryMetropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.99
This is the epic progressive rock album from Dream Theater. I discovered them when someone lent me a copy of Images and Words in the mid 90's. Sometimes their music gets off into the realm of self indulgency (particularly the drums), but you gotta love what they do. Their latest release is: Black Clouds and Silver Linings (2009)
DeadwingDeadwing by Porcupine Tree
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.98
Now this is the progressive rock band that is really growing on me! Deadwing is an outstanding album. They are more melodic than Dream Theater, more innovative than Pink Floyd. Check out some other stuff the lead singer Steven Wilson had done with Blackfield and on his own. Their next release is going to be: The Incident (9/2009)
PowerslavePowerslave by Iron Maiden
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.95
This is the classic album from Iron Maiden. Epic songs. Their latest release is: A Matter of Life and Death (2008)
AqualungAqualung by Jethro Tull
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.95
You know what? Jethro Tull is cool. Regardless of how much fun gets poked at them for winning a grammy for best hard rock performance in 1998 for "Crest of a Knave". They responded with: "The Flute is a heavy metal instrument!" , they were always an innovative and interesting band. Aqualung is a classic. Status:Retired?
The Division BellThe Division Bell by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.07
I prefer the David Gilmour stuff from Pink Floyd. That's why the Division Bell is my favorite. I had to pick one. Status:Retired
Blink the BrightestBlink the Brightest by Tracy Bonham
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $1.84
I think Tracy Bonham is absolutely gorgeous and talented. Her early stuff was 90's angst rock, but now she's doing stuff like Blink the Brightest. It's a great sounding, well produced effort. She should get more attention. Her next release is set for: (2009)
Automatic for the PeopleAutomatic for the People by R.E.M.
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $0.01
REM was at its best from the mid 80's to early 90's. They still produce good stuff. Another classic band for my generation. Their latest release is: Accelerate (2008)
Mighty Joe MoonMighty Joe Moon by Grant Lee Buffalo
Buy used from: $3.47
Grant Lee Phillips is still producing music even though GLB disbanded years ago. If you've never heard Mighty Joe Moon, then your missing out on something special. Grant Lee Phillips next release is going to be: Little Moon (9/2009)
Ten Summoner's TalesTen Summoner's Tales by Sting
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $0.30
Sting always came across as the smart sophisticated rock star. The Police were good, but his solo stuff is even better. His latest release is: Sacred Love (2003) I'm not counting Songs from the Labyrinth because it is classical music.
Old Futures GoneOld Futures Gone by John Gorka
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $6.69
First heard John Gorka on WKSU back in the early 90's. Seen him live. Keep buying his CD's. Great songwriter in the popular folk genre. Intelligent lyricist.
Duty Now for the FutureDuty Now for the Future by Devo
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.05
Some people say that DEVO isn't cool anymore. I say: I wish that had made more music since 1991! There is no one like DEVO. Forturnately, their next release is going to be: Fresh (2010)
The Book of SecretsThe Book of Secrets by Loreena McKennitt
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.44
A beautiful songwriter of world music, Loreena McKennitt is incredible. It's great to listen to her music at night, with the window open letting the cool breeze in. Dreamy, awesome stuff. Her latest release is: An Ancient Muse (2006) and she's since release a collection of Winter songs.
The WorksThe Works by Jonatha Brooke
Buy used from: $6.65
I first saw Jonatha Brooke live (as a member of the Story) at a concert at Oberlin College in the early 90's. I could tell then that she was an amazing talent. Distinct voice, great songwriter. More people should know about Jonatha Brooke. Her latest release is: The Works (2008)
Big HorizonBig Horizon by David Wilcox
Buy used from: $0.99
David Wilcox is another relatively unknown American songwriter. He writes songs with some of the most poignant lyrics I've ever heard. His latest release is: Open Hand (2009)
Heaven & HellHeaven & Hell by Black Sabbath
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.50
Ronnie James Dio. The best heavy metal vocalist there is. Heaven & Hell is the classic album when he was a member of Black Sabbath. When I was in the 10th grade, I used to play this all the time. Made me feel rebelious. His latest release with his Black Sabbath bandmates is: The Devil You Know (2009)
SurfacingSurfacing by Sarah McLachlan
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.18
Sarah McLachlan has a beautiful voice. Her latest release is: Afterglow (2003)
ViolatorViolator by Depeche Mode
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.13
While you couldn't pay me to see Depeche Mode live, I still think they make some of the best music ever. Violator is their best album. Their latest release is: Sounds of the Universe (2009)
EmpireEmpire by Queensrÿche
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $4.30
Queensyche has gone downhill a little in the 2000's, but their early stuff remains some of the best rock music ever. Lead singer, Geoff Tate has a unique voice. They were never better as they were on Empire. Their latest release is: American Soldier (2009)
So Long So WrongSo Long So Wrong by Alison Krauss & Union Station
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.99
Another beautiful voice. Sometimes a little too pretty, because I prefer some of her more energetic, traditional bluegrass songs. So Long So Wrong is her best. Her latest release (with Union Station, not the Robert Plant duet stuff) is: Lonely Runs Both Ways (2004)
A Few Small RepairsA Few Small Repairs by Shawn Colvin
Buy used from: $0.01
I have only ever went to one concert by myself. It was Shawn Colvin at a small venue called Peabody's Down Under in the flats district in Cleveland. This was before she won a grammy for "A Few Small Repairs". Her concert was wonderful. She writes and sings really good songs. Her latest release is: These Four Walls (2008)
The Freewheelin' Bob DylanThe Freewheelin' Bob Dylan by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $5.94
The early Dylan stuff up until Oh Mercy in 1989 is classic. Since then, his voice has gotten too gravelly for my taste. Nevertheless, he is an American Icon. His latest release is: Together Through Life (2009)
