![]() | Gojira [Blu-ray]
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.99 Easily the most powerful and emotionally gripping kaiju(monster) movie of all time. While Gojira/Godzilla went on to fulfill various roles throughout the years, he originally
represented the all too real horrors of the atomic age. Honda and Tsuburaya's masterpiece is both an anti-war elegy as well as a personal tale of honor, betrayal and sacrifice.

![]() | Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah / Godzilla & Mothra: The Battle for Earth
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $7.99 While the Heisei era started for Godzilla two movies ago, for us Region 1 reliant fans it starts here with this fullscreened(d'oh!) double-shot. For me the Mothra feature is the better of the two, but Ghidorah's film sets up Mechagodzilla's next appearance nicely.
|
![]() | Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.20 A pretty good flick involving a new Mechagodzilla and giving some much needed screen time to Rodan. It also introduces Baby Godzilla-a far more tolerable godzillasaurus than Minilla ever was.
|
![]() | Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla / Godzilla vs. Destoroyah
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.97 Here's what you get with this widescreened(woo-hoo!) duo: One mediocre Godzilla film and one downright classic end to the Heisei era set of films. Destoroyah is one tough s.o.b. and Godzilla's hurting from the get go. How will it all end? You'll just have to watch. Lookout for Moguera of Mysterians fame in Spacegodzilla as well.
|
![]() | Godzilla 2000
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.56 The Millennium era series of films start out of the gate strong with this offering from '99. Godzilla himself even gets a much-welcomed redesign. The baddie doesn't make a proper appearance until the end, but it's well worth the wait.
|
![]() | Godzilla vs. Megaguirus
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.33 A callback to Rodan's titular film comes in the form of massive dragonfly-like insects which plague Godzilla like...well, a plague. Just nevermind the strings when you see them-poopie!
|
![]() | Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.88 I love this movie. Godzilla's back to take the crown for meanest kaiju around and he's a silver-eyed demon in this one. Ghidorah plays good guy for a change and both Mothra and Baragon will need his help to stand a chance against the monster king.
|
![]() | Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.82 Part 1 of the Millennium era Mechagodzilla films, both of which are pretty straightforward Godzilla fare. If nothing else the Mechagodzilla redesign is pretty cool-looking and Mothra's inclusion always raises a film's watchability.
|
![]() | Godzilla - Tokyo S.O.S.
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.25 |
![]() | Godzilla - Final Wars
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.89 While fairly light on story the last of the Godzilla films packs a massive amount of action. It's a reunion film of sorts encompassing almost all of the past kaiju from the entire film series, however brief some cameos may be.
|
![]() | Icons of Sci-Fi: Toho Collection
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $13.22 Finally we get Mothra on dvd. But what's this? The H-Man and Battle In Outer Space are also included? As well as the American versions of each film? Done and done.
|
![]() | Ultraman: Series One, Vol. 1
Buy used from: $14.99 Godzilla's own Eiji Tsuburaya helmed the often imitated, but never rivaled, effects of this highly influential tokusatsu(special effects) show. Each episode showcases a level of craftsmanship rarely seen on either Japanese or American television from its era.
|
![]() | Ultraman - Series One, Vol. 2
Buy used from: $5.98 |
![]() | The Super Robot Red Baron - The Complete Series
Buy used from: $28.91 Red Baron distinguished itself amongst other toku shows of its day mainly for being the closest a live action show could get to emulating the wildly popular super robot anime shows vying for ratings just before its inception. It's a lot of fun and somewhat more mature than its contemporaries.
|
![]() | Iron King - The Complete Series
Buy used from: $15.29 While not wholly original by any means, nor spotlighting the best effects a toku ever had, Iron King does have heart and you could do far worse with your time and money than this series.
|
![]() | Zebraman
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $8.36 Cult director Takashi Miike infuses warmth and humor throughout this family friendly homage to the tokusatsu shows of the seventies. Akin to his Happiness Of The Katakuris or The Great Yokai War, Zebraman is meant to make you feel good at its close and it succeeds deftly in this regard.
|
![]() | Big Man Japan
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $9.24 More wild satire than anything else, Big Man Japan gathers its concepts both from classic kaiju films and toku shows respectively. It also sports some nice cg of both the title character as well as the many wacky monsters he encounters. Be prepared for an equally bizarre ending that further justifies its place on this list.
|
![]() | The Devil Lady - The Complete Collection
Buy used from: $21.98 A somewhat more recent anime series, Go Nagai's Devil Lady echos many similar concepts found throughout toku and kaiju related media. There's also a very nice retro feel to all of the proceedings as well. Be warned, though, this show is not lighthearted by any means. Gory deaths and rampant violence abounds.
|
![]() | The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection, Vol. 10 (Godzilla vs. Megalon / Swamp Diamonds / Teen-Age Strangler / The Giant Spider Invasion)
Buy used from: $118.99 If you can find it, and that's a big if, Godzilla vs. Megalon's scathing riffing courtesy of MST3K is pure gold. This is even more so if you're a fan at all of the Showa era Godzilla films. MST3K's version of Jet Jaguar's theme song is worth the price of admission alone...or at least it was until Toho called foul.
|
![]() | Zeiram
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $9.59 Keita Amemiya's love of costuming/character design shines through prominently in this, his first of two films which introduce a plucky female bounty hunter from the stars going toe-to-toe with a nigh invulnerable genetic monstrosity known only as Zeiram.
|
![]() | Meatball Machine
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.00 While more of a guro(gore) film than a kaiju/tokusatsu piece, Meatball Machine does offer blatantly rubber suited combatants fiercely battling it out with one another throughout. Amemiya's work is also found here with his design of the "necroborgs"-alien parasite piloted human hosts who wield various bizarre and outrageous armaments.
