![]() | Intel D945GCLF Essential Series Mini-ITX DDR2 667 Intel Graphics Integrated Atom Processor Desktop Board - Retail
Buy new: $69.63 Let's begin with a small board. Measuring just 17 by 17 centimetres and 4 cm tall, it has all the power you need to move most pieces of today's software, even Vista if you need to. Its main drawback is the lack of AGP or PCI Express slots, so you're stuck with the integrated graphics board and the single PCI slot. Add memory, a hard drive, a DVD, a case and a power supply, and you're done.

![]() | Intel D945GCLF2 Essential Series Mini-ITX DDR2 667 Intel Graphics Integrated Atom Processor Desktop Board - Retail
Buy new: $86.97 Another small board by intel. The main difference between this one and her sister D945GCLF is the s-video output: you can connect this one to your TV. Not Full HD, but readable, and I can watch my movies in my 54-inch TV.

![]() | Kingston ValueRAM 1 GB DDR2 667 MHz 240-PIN Memory Module (KVR667D2/1GR)
Buy new: $26.49 / Used from: $17.99 You will need RAM. The more ram, the better. Some boards have only one memory slot, some have two. Get at least one gigabyte, two will be better, four will be amazing. Kingston is a very good brand, ValueRAM is cheap, you can't go wrong.
|
![]() | Apex MI-100 4BAY Desktop Blk/Silver 250W ATX12V Mitx
Buy new: $51.87 You'll need a case. I recommend building your own case, just because the small size of the boards can be useful to embed them in weird places. If you don't want to do a mess, get a small case like this one. You can fit two drives: one hard drive and one CD, DVD or Blu-ray reader or burner. It may be noisy due to the power supply fan, but your mileage may vary.
|
![]() | AOpen 91.97L20.A030 S-120A Mini ITX Case with Adapter
Buy new: $54.90 This one is very different from the previous one. It is designed for a special motherboard, but you can squeeze other brands on it. It doesn't have a power supply and it doesn't have space for anything but a hard drive. But it looks good.
|
![]() | Mini-ITX DC-DC picoPSU-120 mini power supply
Buy new: $102.99 If you don't want to get a chassis because you want to build your own system, I'd recommend this power supply for your motherboard. It plugs right in the ATX power port, and you will need to connect it to a power brick, the same type you will use for a laptop (and you may use one from an old laptop or get a new one). It is powerful enough to connect the motherboard, an HDD and a DVD burner.

![]() | Western Digital Caviar Blue 500 GB Bulk/OEM Hard Drive 3.5 Inch, 16 MB Cache, 7200 RPM SATA II WD5000AAKS
Buy new: $53.98 / Used from: $105.00 You'll need storage. The bigger capacity of the drive, the more data that can be lost if you kick the computer. Get a SATA drive, they're faster and as reliable as old EIDE drives. I'll go for at least 320 gigabytes: this one, a 500G drive, holds plenty of pr0n, I mean, data. B-D
|
![]() | Seagate 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 Bulk/OEM Hard Drive ST31000340AS [Amazon Frustration-Free Packaging]
This is a fast, reliable and huge drive, holding one terabyte, that is 1000GB of pr0n, I mean, data. Imagine how many movies, music and pictures you can store on it: enough to download 0.00024% of all the data available on the Internet.
|
![]() | Pioneer BDC-2202B 5x Blu-ray/DVD/CD Combo Drive (Black)
You may or may not need a DVD drive. I don't use them: wireless network provides me with access to my server where I store all my stuff in different arrays of disks, so if one fails I still get my pr0n. But you may want to look at this one. It is an EIDE blu-ray reader that can burn dvds and cds. It is not exactly cheap, but you may find a space for it in your budget.
|
![]() | LG GGW-H20L Super Multi Blue - Blu-ray Disc Burner / HD DVD-ROM Drive w/ Lightscribe - 6x2x6x/3x - Serial ATA - internal - 5.25"
Buy used from: $199.99 You may want to take a look to this drive too. It's a SATA Blu-ray burner that also happens to burn dvds and cds and read hd-dvds, and supports lightscribe. I don't like lightscribe at all, for me it is too slow, but, hey, it's your call. It's on the expensive side, too, but worth it.
|
![]() | AOpen 8x DVD±RW Notebook IDE Drive (Black)
You may want something slim. This is a DVD and CD burner, and you or may not need an adapter (some MiniITX cases have one included, most doesn't), but this drive, while designed for laptops, works very good for its price.
|
![]() | BTC 9019URF 87-Key Wireless Multimedia Keyboard w/Built-in Dual-Mode Joystick Mouse (Black)
You don't want to ruin your box with long cables sprouting from it. So let get wireless. This kit provides you a way to interact with your new computer: is that and old Betamax playing The Dark Knight in full HD? This wireless keyboard has a small joystick in its upper right end, that is a mouse in disguise. It's not a keyboard you want to use to write your new book, but you can answer your email.
|
![]() | Logitech Deluxe 660 Cordless Desktop
You may want to take a look at this one. It's well built, not at all expensive, and good looking. It's not the most recent technology (in computer years, it's obsolete) but it will fit in any budget.
|
![]() | Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Router
Buy new: $64.99 / Used from: $32.00 You'll need conectivity. Let's start with a router. This one is not the fastest, the slimmest, nor the better-looking router, but its reliable and cheap. Couple it with one of the two wireless cards below and you're ready to go.
|
![]() | Linksys WMP54G Wireless-G PCI Adapter
Buy new: $39.99 / Used from: $22.90 If your case allows you to fit it, get this internal card. It will save you a precious USB port and you will get a nice external antenna that can be switched for a bigger, baddest, meanest one if you need it.
|
![]() | Linksys WUSB54GC Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter
Buy new: $33.00 / Used from: $25.00 If you don't mind using an USB port, or don't like an antenna sprouting from your machine, then get this USB card. It's very reliable and fast, but perhaps a little big. You can use a small extension cord if you want, but I'd recommend you to plug it directly to the mainboard.
|
![]() | VIA EPIA-N10000 Nano ITX Motherboard With 1GHz Eden-N Processor.
Now, if you don't mind spending a little more, you can get something that is a little small. This is a small, very small motherboard. It has a VIA Luke 1GHz CPU, MPEG-2 decoder/MPEG-4 acceleration, VGA and TV-Out ports, supports up to 8 USB 2.0 ports, has an ATA 133 port for two EIDE drives, two SATA ports, ethernet, keyboard, mouse and audio ports. You'll need a NanoITX power supply, though.
|
![]() | VIA Artigo Pico-ITX Builder Kit A1000
You may want to get this kit if you need to build something just a little bigger than a couple deck of cards. It has a Pico-ITX motherboard with a 1GHz processor, and the chassis just has enough space for a single EIDE laptop hdd. It doesn't even have enough room for the complete power supply, so you'll need to plug a power brick. But the complete system fits in 4x15x11 centimetres.
|
![]() | Lilliput 10.4" CAR Pc Touch Screen Lcd Monitor Terminals
Buy new: $459.99 And finally, the monitors. You may want to plug your computer to your Big Fat LCD or Plasma TV that happens to have a VGA port, or a simple monitor (I'd go for a 19 inches, its good for your eyes and cheap) or you can get this one. It's just 10 inches, but it's a touch screen model and has its own stand. Not exactly cheap, but may be useful in some tasks as it replaces the mouse.
|
![]() | Lilliput 1.8 Inches LCD Monitor
And this one is just a curiosity. It's too small to be useful for any task except watching a movie or TV while working. If you have a TV tuner you can connect this monitor to your machine (through the s-video port) and let something run in the background while you work in your main screen Or you could plug it to your dvd. Or you could not buy this and watch your movie in your living room.
|
![]() | InFocus X6 DLP Projector
And finally, something not entirely computer-related, but for the complete decadent: watch your TV, movies and computer while laying in your bed. Simply project the image to your roof (I've done it!) using one of these. It supports VGA, RCA and s-video inputs, so you can connect your computer, DVD or TiVO. I once embedded one of these in a toolbox. It's not exactly cheap, but worth every penny.
