A trio of Devil's Island convicts escape prison on Christmas Eve. While waiting for a boat to take them off the island, become involved in the business woes of an island shopkeeper, who runs the shop for a nasty rich relative who is coming there to check the books. Not a typical Bogart vehicle, all the action revolves around the Yuletide holiday.

Most of the movie takes place between Christmas and New Year's Eves and features a bittersweet courtship between Lemmon and MacLaine, who's torn between the decent mensch and the married boss she's been having an affair with and who she can't seem to stop loving.

Instead, she spends Christmas Eve using magic to enchant and seduce her upstairs neighbor (Jimmy Stewart). Witches can play with romance, but if they fall in love they'll lose their powers.
