An Artist's Notebook: Techniques and MaterialsAn Artist's Notebook: Techniques and Materials by Bernard Chaet

A fantastic studio reference book for techniques in virtually all drawing & painting materials. The painting section is good, though not as deep as "The Painter's Craft", but the drawing section is good.
Drawing: A Contemporary ApproachDrawing: A Contemporary Approach by Teel Sale

How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist, 5th ed.: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your SoulHow to Survive and Prosper as an Artist, 5th ed.: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul by Caroll Michels
Buy used from: $1.05
The basic "how to be a professional artist" book. Has a great resource section in the back. This was my BFA textbook. Though it is meant for fine artists, it is sometimes focused on the more "commercial-y" aspects of being a fine artist. Still, this is the first book to get when you are starting out and figuring out the first steps towards being a professional artist.
Women Who Run with the WolvesWomen Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.70
I know, I know... a cliche.... but I really think all women artists should read this book. It possesses important intuition-unlocking keys.
The Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for LifeThe Creative Habit: Learn It and Use It for Life by Twyla Tharp

One of the best books on creative process I have ever read. Translates well to artmaking and the layered process of creating.

Idiosyncratic Identities: Artists at the End of the Avant-Garde (Contemporary Artists & Their Critics)Idiosyncratic Identities: Artists at the End of the Avant-Garde (Contemporary Artists & Their Critics) by Donald Burton Kuspit
Buy used from: $29.95
This book is one of my touchstones: I have several paragraphs posted where I can see them every day. Premise: in the postmodern age, "only the idiosyncratic artist remains credible and convincing". Idiosyncratic art = "radically personal art that establishes unconscious communication".
The Uncanny (Penguin Modern Classics)The Uncanny (Penguin Modern Classics) by Sigmund Freud
Buy used from: $11.93
Pre-Wikipedia, there was something called "the primary source"...
Color in Contemporary Painting: Integrating Practice and TheoryColor in Contemporary Painting: Integrating Practice and Theory by Charles LeClair

just fun.
M/E/A/N/I/N/G: NO. 2M/E/A/N/I/N/G: NO. 2 by Eds. Susan Bee and Mira Schor
Another volume that should be reprinted. A friend recently told me that one of his GRAD students asked him why their art had to have meaning. That student would find no use for this book.
Chromophobia (FOCI)Chromophobia (FOCI) by David Batchelor
Buy new: $17.05 / Used from: $14.00
A book that I am constantly recommending to my chromophobic friends. A quick and really interesting read on our society's fear of color.
Afterimage: The Indelible Catholic Imagination of Six American FilmmakersAfterimage: The Indelible Catholic Imagination of Six American Filmmakers by Richard A. Blake
Buy used from: $2.70
Before Eleanor Heartney's book on Catholicism in contemporary art, there was this book on "the Catholic Imagination" in film. Not as compelling as "Postmodern Heretics", but an interesting read if you are exploring Catholic imagery.

I was doing Crewdson images in paint a decade earlier, but I still love his work.

Whole ClothWhole Cloth by Mildred Constatine

Jerome: After the PageantJerome: After the Pageant by Thomas Avena
Buy used from: $14.95
This book has blown away almost everyone I know who has seen it. Documents the work of an innovative artist whose life was cut short by AIDS. Paintings on found objects, executed in nail polish, glitter, whiteout, ashes, etc. Very irreverent imagery with Catholic references. Not for the conservative reader.
Ivan AlbrightIvan Albright by Courtney Graham Donnell
