![]() | Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $10.55 (Sierra Leone) Similar in structure to Buena Vista, but much more arresting. The setting drives the story in a powerful way: music is not just something that holds culture and history together; it's a matter of survival and dignity for people in the midst of war and displacement.

![]() | War Dance
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $8.30 (Uganda) This was a nominee for a 2008 Oscar and probably should have won. The documentary follows three kids living in a refugee camp (who, in a way, are staying alive through their traditional songs and dances) as they travel to Kampala to be a part of a prestigious music festival. Not to be missed!

![]() | Latcho Drom [VHS]
Buy used from: $34.99 While this isn't my personal favorite, it's a beautifully shot documentary about the "gypsy music" of the Roma all over the world--from Europe to Egypt to India. Theres no voice-over narrative; the music, rather, is the script. A must-see if you're interested in this genre of music. Amazon no longer carries the VHS; its being scalped. (The US-format DVD isn't out yet--but the PAL one is.)

![]() | I'll Sing for You
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $9.95 (Mali) Not a classic documentary, but still interesting look into "KarKar" Traore's music. The story goes that, after his wife died, he moved to Paris, working in construction and singing on weekends at his immigrant shelter. Years later, everyone thought him dead--until a music producer discovered an old recording. Ali Farke Toure and other well-known musicians tell their stories.

![]() | A Visit to Ali Farka Toure
Buy new: $17.99 (Mali) Filmmaker Marc Huraux journeys to the small village of Niafunké for a visit with charismatic singer, guitarist and resident hero Ali Farka Toure in this documentary. Unfortunately not much material on his adult life or later music, but a must for any fan.

![]() | Baraka
Buy used from: $13.35 (Earth) One of my all-time favorites. Not your standard documentary whatsoever. There's no dialogue, except for one chapter in which a song/dance (well, I have no idea what to call it) is performed, but do NOT be deterred! The story and the music is absolutely stunning. The only way I can sum it up: A Day in the Life of God. Music ranges from tribal to Andean to Dead Can Dance!
|
![]() | Music from a Painted Cave
Buy used from: $21.99 (USA) A live performance that I sorely wish had used more of a documentary approach; expect, instead, PBS' standard format. However, Robert Mirabal (Taos Pueblo) is wholly unique and further developed this show that he took on the road into a beautiful blend of story and music.
