Women's Studies: Female Sex & Sexuality Reading and Viewing
By an Amazon.com customer
Tell Me (American Poets Continuum)Tell Me (American Poets Continuum) by Kim Addonizio
Buy new: $11.66 / Used from: $5.31
A number of poems specifically address femininity & female sexuality including What Do Women Want, Good Girl, Physics, and One-Night Stands. Uses vivid and often stark imagery to depict important female moments, like single motherhood and meaningless sexual encounters. Few other poets deal with issues so central to female identity with as much blunt force as Addonizio does in this book.
Aimee and JaguarAimee and Jaguar
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $15.27
Based on the memoirs of Lilly Wust, wife of a Nazi officer who falls in love with a Jewish woman in Germany during WW II. While main focus is on the Jewish characters, it also vividly depicts a lesbian culture that developed while many German men were away & addresses Lilly’s struggles with coming to terms with love for a woman. At the same time, the accuracy in this film is questionable.
Anatomy of HellAnatomy of Hell
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $12.22
Briellat is renowned for often explicit portrayals of sexual relationships. This film centers on voyeurism & issues of formation & expression of sexuality. The portrayal of homosexuality seemed a bit flat, but the portrayal of female sexual power & expression is unmatched in any of other films I watched.
The Second SexThe Second Sex by Simone de Beauvoir
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $2.25
The Second Sex is an extraordinarily important work in the development of feminism, but cannot be lightly tackled. Although there are excellent chapters that cover periods within a woman’s life, the book as a whole is a bit thick/dense to digest in one sitting, even if that sitting lasted a full semester. I recommend reading the introduction & 1 or 2 chapters relevant to an individual project.
Breasts - A DocumentaryBreasts - A Documentary
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $13.38
A great resource for jump-starting open dialogue about bodies. It presents women of all shapes, sizes & backgrounds, verbalizing opinions about breasts & the way in which their bodies affect their interactions with the world. While this film is not overwhelmingly comprehensive or scientific, it could serve as a jumping off point for discussing body issues especially for a co-ed audience.
The Body Project: An Intimate History of American GirlsThe Body Project: An Intimate History of American Girls by Joan Jacobs Brumberg
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.98
One of the most comprehensive accounts of history of the female body I came across. Draws on variety of primary sources to paint picture about young women’s bodies from the Victorian period forward. Focused on everything from menstruation to sexual expression, this book opened my eyes to ways in which the body is & is viewed differently now than in the past, using engaging/accessible language.
Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (Routledge Classics)Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (Routledge Classics) by Judith Butler
Buy new: $10.93 / Used from: $9.75
Butler’s language here is notably dense & book is divided into only 3 sections, difficult to read a chunk at a time since Butler assumes continued knowledge & a pretty strong familiarity with larger debates of gender & feminist theory. Although she does focus in on some theorists specifically and dissect their work within her book, I learned more from reading the actual works themselves.
Undoing GenderUndoing Gender by Judith Butler
Buy new: $21.60 / Used from: $18.10
Unlike the other Butler text this is surprisingly accessible. Each section stands alone as an essay and the language is easier to digest. I was slightly confused by the selection of topics she addresses that did not always seem to be universally central to gender theory. Still, I would recommend this text because it’s an “easy-to-read” Butler & she is so important to gender theory.
Multiple Voices in Feminist Film CriticismMultiple Voices in Feminist Film Criticism by Diane Carson
Buy new: $26.50 / Used from: $5.47
Because of its focus on underrepresented voices, specifically black and Hispanic perspectives, this text was not really applicable to my overall questions in studying women in film. Some articles in the most general sections were helpful, but are also those contained in non-feminist collections, so I would have been just as well off to have a more basic collection of film criticism.
Women, Art, and Society (World of Art)Women, Art, and Society (World of Art) by Whitney Chadwick
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $10.05
This book is easy-to-read, even for an individual not particularly versed in art terminology. Presents a detailed history, but frames approaches in contemporary feminist language & paints clear picture of larger positioning of women in art, as subjects & artists. In many of the chapters, Chadwick brought to light issues that resonate with larger theme of importance of female expression.
Writing on the Body: Female Embodiment and Feminist TheoryWriting on the Body: Female Embodiment and Feminist Theory
Buy new: $19.56 / Used from: $4.68
Most helpful collection. Essays spanned topics central to analysis of body as problematic topic/location, and are written by most important names in feminist theory. At the same time, the essays were short & accessible, making theory comparatively easy to tackle. Highlights: Irigaray’s “This Sex Which is Not One,” Lorde’s “Uses of the Erotic,” and Doane’s “Film & the Masquerade.”
Ani DiFranco: VersesAni DiFranco: Verses by Ani DiFranco
Buy new: $14.78 / Used from: $10.29
In Verses, DiFranco’s feminist tendencies are clear & poems like My IQ, Tiptoe, Platforms, Camping and Reprieve illuminate the many contradictions of contemporary life as a woman addressing issues like menstruation, high-heeled shoes, and female socialization. I would highly recommend these DiFranco poems to someone seeking to understand and study gender and sexuality though literary expression.
Myths Of Gender: Biological Theories About Women And Men, Revised EditionMyths Of Gender: Biological Theories About Women And Men, Revised Edition by Anne Fausto-Sterling
Buy used from: $2.41
Addressing same myths (intelligence, PMS, sexuality) as Tavris in Mismeasure of Woman, I found this book more successful. It was an easier read & utilized more compelling data. At the same time, much of the biological evidence Fausto-Sterling uses is not specifically related to humans, so it provides more of a standard for comparison/evidence of possibility than actual conviction.
Sexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of SexualitySexing the Body: Gender Politics and the Construction of Sexuality by Anne Fausto-Sterling
Buy new: $14.28 / Used from: $8.99
Incredibly helpful. While size of the book was daunting, half is notes/bibliography. Addresses gender & the sexing of the body in more sophisticated manner than in Myths & supports arguments with graphs, tables & funny cartoons. Enabled me to understand facts behind some experiences described by women in Venus Boyz, one of the most important films within my study.
Language Unbound: On Experimental Writing by WomenLanguage Unbound: On Experimental Writing by Women by Nancy Gray
Buy used from: $101.48
Having taken class with Prof. Gray, I was eager to get a sense of her earlier academic work. Introduction & explanation of place women hold within the realm of fiction writing was enlightening & well-written. Elucidation of how experimental texts by women function within literary canon promotes a greater understanding of why certain types of writing by women are particularly important.
The Great Happiness Space (Original Japanese Version with English Subtitles)The Great Happiness Space (Original Japanese Version with English Subtitles)
Buy used from: $25.99
I found this movie to be eye-opening. That women & men seek intimacy and companionship in sex/host industry is interesting enough, but the relationship between the male/female sex workers in Japan raises larger questions about the culture driving such a strange sex industry in the first place.
Feminisms and Women's Movements in Contemporary EuropeFeminisms and Women's Movements in Contemporary Europe
Buy new: $125.00 / Used from: $13.71
I read Helen Haste's chapter "Sexual Metaphors." One of the clearest depictions of linguistic-based theories of feminism I have found. Does excellent job of positioning them within larger context of feminism. Really worthwhile article, though potentially difficult to understand for someone who is not already somewhat versed in feminist theory.
Feminist Theory: From Margin to CenterFeminist Theory: From Margin to Center by bell hooks
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $5.99
hooks is able to place many common topics of contemporary feminist theory within larger context, illuminating importance & breaking down false assumptions by pointing out counter-arguments. Divided into 12 easy-to-read sections that can be read independently and I would have to highly recommend this book for anyone interested in feminist theory.
The Good Girl's Guide to Bad Girl Sex: An Indispensable Resource for Pleasure and SeductionThe Good Girl's Guide to Bad Girl Sex: An Indispensable Resource for Pleasure and Seduction by Barbara Keesling
Buy new: $14.93 / Used from: $2.11
Meant to be a guide for girls looking to gain more sexual confidence, reading this book from a distance—examining what it says about female sexual culture—is a bit alarming and really demonstrates some of the tensions that exist for women.
Feminisms (Oxford Readers)Feminisms (Oxford Readers)
Buy new: $42.95 / Used from: $8.32
There is so much crammed into this book, I had a hard time differentiating between the really significant articles and the supplementary. Based primarily on studies of male/female power dynamics and violence on one side and bisexuality /queer theory on the other. Very few of the articles actually addressed the active expression of heterosexuality by women.
The L Word - The Complete Fifth SeasonThe L Word - The Complete Fifth Season
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $29.95
While earlier seasons have been criticized for not depicting real lesbians/real relationships, as the show has progressed it has actually confronted many serious issues. Since many people who are not lesbians tend to be naive about female-female sex, the fact that there is a popular television show that I can point them towards is incredibly helpful.
Technologies of Gender: Essays on Theory, Film, and Fiction (Theories of Representation and Difference)Technologies of Gender: Essays on Theory, Film, and Fiction (Theories of Representation and Difference) by Teresa de Lauretis
Buy new: $11.65 / Used from: $2.47
Lauretis is quoted so often not only because what she is saying makes sense, but because it matters. I found the opening and closing chapters the most useful . The way she explains gender construction and dissects creates patterns of linguistic feminism are provoking and spot-on with describing the actual experience of femininity and female-ness intersects with its more theoretical construction.
Lesbian Sex and SexualityLesbian Sex and Sexuality
Buy used from: $13.44
This documentary series claims to depict varying ways lesbian sexuality is expressed but actually focuses heavily on pornography, club dancers & other display-oriented sexualities. I did not find it added much to my understanding of actual behind-closed-doors lesbian relationships and partnering.
Decentering the Center: Philosophy for a Multicultural, Postcolonial, and Feminist World (A Hypatia Book)Decentering the Center: Philosophy for a Multicultural, Postcolonial, and Feminist World (A Hypatia Book)
Buy new: $18.85 / Used from: $6.60
The central text used in Nancy Gray’s feminist theory course, I purchased this book thinking it would help me develop an understanding of the framework of contemporary feminism within which I would be able to situate my own research. I did not find it to be particularly helpful since most of the articles were specifically aimed at transnational feminism.
Feminist Theory and the Body: A ReaderFeminist Theory and the Body: A Reader by Janet Price
Buy new: $34.23 / Used from: $22.00
I considered most sections/essays essential reading for my project. Each contains introduction & average of 6 relevant/diverse essays. “Sexy Bodies,” “After the Binary” & “Performing the Body” were the most useful. My only major critique is only one essay, Minh-ha’s “Write Your Body,”focused on the importance of the body to women’s writing and written expression.
Private Dicks - Men ExposedPrivate Dicks - Men Exposed
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.99
Not as good as Breasts, but occasionally thought provoking. Ex: One group of men, interviewed together, though fraternity brothers all thought/talked about sex completely differently. This illustrates an important element of this film: it focused more on the men’s thoughts on sex than on body image, unlike the female version of this film.
Real Women Have CurvesReal Women Have Curves
Buy new: $5.98 / Used from: $3.59
So often used in film festivals/discussion groups on body image, I imagined this film would be focused on these issues, but that is not the case. While some scenes very specifically address ways in which these mostly heavier women feel about their bodies, there are films that do a much better job at looking at female body issues.
Saving FaceSaving Face
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $5.93
This film significantly exceeded my expectations. Rather than just having a subplot of a lesbian relationship, it also focused on difficulty of coupling within Chinese-American families, particularly when romances are non-traditional. While I thought the resolution seemed inaccurate, the depiction of the close-knit community presented insight into the importance of family, tradition & approval.
Seven Beauties (Digitally Remastered Edition)Seven Beauties (Digitally Remastered Edition)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $14.08
Directed by the first Oscar nominated female director, it has historical merit, but was not what I expected. Although called Seven Beauties, these women play very insignificant roles. One interesting aspect was power held by a female concentration camp commander and way in which it causes a sexual role reversal. A former pimp offers her his body for greater privileges within the camp.
Sex - The Annabel Chong StorySex - The Annabel Chong Story
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $11.95
Since the film bills Annabel as a gender studies undergrad, I imagined this film would address Chong’s exploits as a porn star from an academic perspective. Instead, the portrayal raised a lot of questions for me about her sincerity in being content with her role in the porn industry. Does show how being a part of pornography industry affects other aspects of life.
Sexo Por CompasionSexo Por Compasion
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $1.95
This film raises some interesting questions about the healing powers of sex and the different reasons that an individual might benefit from it. It also deals with the intersection between sex and religious principle, even addressing the question of whether it is possible for sex, even outside of marriage, to be something that should not be considered sinful.
Shortbus (Unrated Edition)Shortbus (Unrated Edition)
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $8.72
Focuses on sexualities/self-discovery of a number of characters, male and female, with a wide variety of relationships to sex. While I thought this film did a great job at addressing some sexuality issues and demonstrated the wide variety of ways in which people experience sex, it was so non-memorable that I actually rented it a second time, forgetting I had seen it before.
Story of WomenStory of Women
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $17.99
Based on a true story, examines ways war can affect lives of women left behind. Marie-Louise Girard performs abortions when she is initially approached by a woman whose husband is off at war, & develops business from it in addition to renting rooms i out to prostitutes in order to pay the bills. Also addresses her harsh punishment for these crimes in the context of occupied WWII France.
The Mismeasure of WomanThe Mismeasure of Woman by Carol Tavris
Buy new: $23.35 / Used from: $0.11
Initially hesitant because of mixed reviews, my concerns about this book were very legitimate. While some subjects Tavris approaches were highly relevant to my study, her methodology and the way she presents issues left much of the book worthless and the rest inconclusive. Tavris seeks to dismantle a number of myths, but relies on strange data and resources to do so.
Thinking XXX (Extended Cut)Thinking XXX (Extended Cut)
Buy new: $21.49 / Used from: $13.95
While this film did a good job of capturing some aspects of the porn industry, its picture is skewed because all of the stars interviewed are, just that—stars. Rather than capturing the entire industry, it only shows how it is seen by those who achieve success within it. The rosy image it presents, then, seems pretty inaccurate and this film has to be taken with a grain of salt.
Tipping the VelvetTipping the Velvet
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $17.50
This film presents an interesting look at life for lesbian women at the turn of the century, specifically highlighting the cross-dressing theatre and the affluent play-women cultures. This film does an excellent job of presenting segments of theatrical life for women that were often less visible than their on-stage lives.
Venus BoyzVenus Boyz
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $13.95
This film remains central to my understanding of gender construction & ways in which power dynamics are affected by gender. Although the raunchy scenes in the drag club seem out of place compared to the intimate conversations the director holds with these women about their gender/gender-bending experiences, if I were teaching a course on female sexuality, this film would be a part of it.
To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of FeminismTo Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of Feminism
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.25
A collection of essays by people with different relationships to feminism. To the extent that it aims to show the real face of feminism, it succeeds where other similar collections have failed because the essays are written by good writers and it even includes chapters written by men, feminists that often get left out of other compilations.
The Politics of Women's Bodies: Sexuality, Appearance, and BehaviorThe Politics of Women's Bodies: Sexuality, Appearance, and Behavior
Buy new: $18.28 / Used from: $5.99
Weitz has collected articles on a number of topics about the body that are not found elsewhere, focusing on voices that fall out of the typical discussion of the body. A good deal of the essays are about the body (de)constructions and politics of non-white ethnic groups or non-traditional age groups.
YesterdayYesterday
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.44
More about one woman’s struggle with AIDS than specifically about any sort of female sexuality, I thought that this film was important because it illuminated the hardships that arise for women in Africa because of the very clear gender imbalance, including the sexual implications.
