I love PIXAR. I admire PIXAR. I pledge my undying devotion to PIXAR. Their movies have heart. Their movies are intelligent. Their movies are unbridled fun, soaring joy. Their movies are masterpieces.
The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $9.45
This should be included in every film history class. Amazing how contemporary it feels 60 years later. Anything but predictable: great script, great direction and great acting, especially Bogart owning the crazy.
The Shawshank Redemption (Single Disc Edition)The Shawshank Redemption (Single Disc Edition)
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $3.33
For a movie to be both real and fill you with hope is a rare thing indeed. That is why Shawshank will always be a classic. Such a perfect blend of ingredients. Proud to share it with my nephew.
Gandhi (Widescreen Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Gandhi (Widescreen Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.65
Gandhi is an action hero, just not the type of action that movies are used to. So that this film captures the passion and the importance of his life in such a compelling manner makes it one of the best biopics of all time.
Minority Report (Widescreen Edition)Minority Report (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $0.04
A near perfect movie. Direction, score, design, effects, script and acting (especially all the supporting characters, and I'll single out Samantha Morton and Lois Smith). The whole team brought their A game on this one. One of the best sci-fi movies of all time.
Away from HerAway from Her
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $1.99
This movie was so good, the acting, the script, the direction, it made me ache. Anyone who has had a loved one succumb to Alzheimers will find this a reflective work of great nuance and subtle beauty.
National Treasure (Widescreen Edition)National Treasure (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.58
All the elements in this treasure hunter movie are so perfectly executed it makes for one very enjoyable movie. Even if it is all about Freemasons.
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof: Deluxe EditionCat on a Hot Tin Roof: Deluxe Edition
Buy used from: $8.23
Whew...hot indeed. Don't watch this movie unless you're in Phase 3 (for all you NFPers out there) *I was a little disenchanted after reading about the play's subject matter, but it doesn't change that the movie is an excellent tale of reconciliation.
The Maltese FalconThe Maltese Falcon
Buy used from: $8.00
Amazing detective story. I will have to watch it again to appreciate it to it fullest, but so many great lines. Here's one of my favorites: "A crippled newsie took 'em away from him. I made him give 'em back."
State of PlayState of Play
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.98
A damn smart twisty thriller. With great actresses (ok, the actors do well too)and a great script that actually has something to say about the current state of news media. I expected a recogizable name to be listed at the end as the director, so kudos to Kevin Mcdonald who guides the film with a steady hand and the right amount of verve.
Psycho (Collector's Edition)Psycho (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.50
Psycho is a masterpiece, but one that can only be truly appreciated today by hearing the history behind it as well, how completely shocking so many things were about it.
Away We GoAway We Go
Buy new: $18.49 / Used from: $7.50
It's a shame, because it could have been a GREAT movie. There is a lot of good things about it and its very funny. But ultimately, the crude language (why did they have to mar the ending?) reaches the point where the movie can't be recommended. My favorite parts though? the music and Maya Rudolph.
Munich (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)Munich (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $23.75
I was really impressed by how Spielberg moves us along through the story with the same emotions as the characters. At the beginning of the mission, you feel an excitement and a sense of "what's next?" but that gives way to fear, paranoia and examination of conscience. Very good.
Valkyrie (Single-Disc Edition)Valkyrie (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.49
Impressive that a movie where you KNOW how it will end can still make you feel tension and wonder, "How is this NOT going to succeed?" A discussion starter.
Where the Wild Things Are [Theatrical Release]Where the Wild Things Are [Theatrical Release]
Jonze fills this movie with visual beauty, irreverent humor and a surprising depth in the characters. Such a strange wild meeting of a child's and an adult's mind. But the ending. A big piece of chocolate cake? Endings are so important to me.
Mean Girls (Special Collector's Edition)Mean Girls (Special Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.99
What elevates this above your typical insipid teen comedy? Tina Fey's smart, heartfelt script that tackles a problem so common in our schools it's usually written off as just "how it is with girls" and in addressing it, draws out some real laughs. Ms. Lohan does a fine job in the role, but in life, is even more depressing after seeing this movie.
Bolt (Single-Disc Edition)Bolt (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $5.44
Definately has PIXAR's fingerprints all over it, which makes it very enjoyable. A creative plot, even if there is one scene where the dialogue is stolen from Jessie the Cowgirl in Toy Story 2. Rhino may be the hyped sidekick, but Mitten's inflection makes her the scene-stealer.
NashvilleNashville
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.95
A very interesting character ensemble, even if there are characters that don't quite fit into the ensemble. Lily Tomlin and Ronee Blakely inject their roles with perfect emotion. And "I'm Easy" will probably get stuck in your head for a few days.
The Karate Kid IIThe Karate Kid II
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $4.65
What is cool about this movie is that when I watch it, I can remember exactly how I felt when I saw it the first time as a little kid. It is a pretty good sequel, a few moments to make fun of. But you'll never see me review Part 3 here. That movie is only watchable if you're going to ridicule it.
Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition)Gran Torino (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $4.30
And in the role of Sneering Grumpy Old Man who Learns a Better Way: Clint Eastwood. I laugh when I think how similar this movie is to "Up"
A Mighty HeartA Mighty Heart
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $0.39
The movie's jumps through time and space were hard to get used to, but in the end became a necessary relief from the turmoil of the present. Such a sad movie.
The American PresidentThe American President
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.07
First off, I remain immune to and even baffled by Annette Benning's "charms". Secondly, Aaron Sorkin's writing is always smart (I am craving Sports Night just thinking about it) but when he does politics, he veers so far left it's absurd. I particularly enjoyed the scene with the Republicans plotting-all old, bald, or old and bald.
Willow (Special Edition)Willow (Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.48
If you don't have built in nostalgia for this Willow, it really is kind of slow. The Brownies are so annoying you'd think they were voiced by Robin Williams. And the sorcery (baby sacrifice? yikes!) and some gruesome creatures rule it out for kids.
Taken (Single-Disc Extended Edition)Taken (Single-Disc Extended Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.99
What we can learn from this movie: A few days in the sex trafficking business will leave a 17 year old girl no less giggly than before. Seriously, terribly written exposition and resolution (Can I carry your luggage for you?) But the meat of the movie is the swift meted justice, and that was very satisfactory.
The SoloistThe Soloist
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $5.02
The performances are decent, the script is unsympathetic but imparts a real truth about our unwillingness to be our brother's keeper. So why didn't this movie gel? It is hard to put into words, but it was like your typical studio script filmed by an artistic indie director. And together, it just doesn't work.
Nick & Norah's Infinite PlaylistNick & Norah's Infinite Playlist
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.03
Good music and likable main characters, Norah's friend is hilarious, Nick's gay guardian angels are distracting, the feeling most strongly imparted to me in this movie was "I would NEVER raise children in NYC." Urban life is so distracting, makes it even harder to be yourself. Nick and Norah's brokenness, insecurities and longing speak to this.
Last Chance HarveyLast Chance Harvey
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.52
I would have liked it a lot better if it was "Last Chance Kate" and the focus was shifted. Emma Thompson is one those actors I wish they would cast in everything. And when she has to accept a role in material below her talent, she still manages to rise above it and deliver a good performance.
Spy Game (Widescreen Edition)Spy Game (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
As I watched, I kept thinking, "Did I already watch this movie 5 years ago?" The plot is so unarresting and formulaic, even at the end I'm still not sure of the answer to that question. Looking on the bright side: the score was great!
Monsters vs. AliensMonsters vs. Aliens
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.72
The antithesis of Up: ugly to look at. Lowest common denominator humor. A plot that an 8-year old could have come up with. Yes, there are a few laughs, but you resent yourself for being amused by such crude, rudimentary work. Call me an animation snob, but the people involved in this should not be proud.
