Class consciousness - A wealthy middle-aged woman begins to lose her status while her maid of 30 years needs to leave because of nonpayment. Wonderful emotional story that has minimal dialogue, and the faces tell the rest.

Eroticism and greed - This 2002 French film not only encompasses eroticism and greed, it's other themes include manipulation, lesbianism, corruption, etc. Two women plot and scheme within a corporation.

Child abuse. Pain and scarring is reflected through two separate avenues. One young man endures pain through physical abuse while another youth's pain is through tattoos. Director explains the two avenues of abuse.

Unemployment - The focus in Spain as a group of men deal differently with the pain of unemployment and the struggle to survive. Popular actor, Javier Bardem is excellent, but it is a lighter role than he has taken with other roles.

Death - Grieving family members deal with the death of their father/husband in this film from Israel. Several members cope differently. The film wasn't great, but more as insight into a family's methods of coping.

Immigration - Living in Spain but from Havana, three sisters embark on a new life. Not particulary great, but for some it may be.

Euthansia. A man continues his journey to end his life as a paraplegic peacefully. Again, Spanish actor Javier Bardem is excellent in this 2004 Oscar winning Best Foreign Film.

Imprisonment - Captured by Germans, a man skillfully plots his escape just hours before his execution. Based on a true story. Suspenseful... very suspenseful.

Deception: A mother & daughter lie and deceive grandmother that her beloved son Otar is still alive and writing letters home. This is Soviet Republic and French. It is very moving with great cast.

Crime - Within a family, a young boy discovers the truth about his parents and their associates as he desperately tries to save another young boy. Suspenseful, disheartening.

Injustice against women. In India, an evil tax collector exerts his power to capture a woman for his personal needs. She rebels with strength and dignity. A confrontation occurs in the spice factory where she has taken refuge.

Reconciliation and redemption - In a small village called, Tajikstan, a man who was imprisioned for his crimes reluctantly assumes custody of his son.

Morality - 1993 South African film is based on morality. A woman arrives thirty years later to seek revenge on a man who impregnated her and abandoned her. Threw miracle, she is wealthy and offers trillions to the poor town if they kill this man.

So many themes are here! The 1996 dramatic movie is about the confines of strict religion, mental illness, confusion, prostitution, and the power of love and healing. Breaking the Waves, written and directed by Lars Von Trier Dancer in The Dark.

Crime - Brazilian film by Jorge Furtado. A lonely young man existing as a photocopier gets by in his mundane little world til he pursues a young woman and turns to crime.
