The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection)The Seventh Seal (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $16.89
This is the film that got me interested in cinema and made me realize that it is an art. I flat out love everything about this film.
Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom - Criterion CollectionSalo, or the 120 Days of Sodom - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $25.95
This is such an unrelenting film. I first read de Sade's novel, and then discovered this movie. I love how it is a more modernized version of his story, but the message is the same. No matter how tuned-down it is from the book, it is still brutally affective.
Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine # 2)Seven Samurai - 3 Disc Remastered Edition (Criterion Collection Spine # 2)
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $21.93
I was intimidated by this film because of its length and by the fact that I am typically not a fan of Japanese art, but this movie floored me and made me realize that Japanese films aren't always gaudy and immature.
Sweet Movie (Criterion Collection)Sweet Movie (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $19.99
Sweet Movie never gets old. I love to watch this with my friends and show it to new people. It is a great conversation piece, and should be read like poetry.
George Washington - Criterion CollectionGeorge Washington - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $16.95
I was attracted to this due to the "Gummo" comparisons and the fact that it was shot locally. It exceeded all expectations and is one of the most brutally honest and beautifully-shot movies I have ever seen.
Man Bites Dog - Criterion CollectionMan Bites Dog - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $27.49 / Used from: $12.59
Black hilarity from start to finish. We first watched this after watching "Dear Zachary", and laughed our butts off before we put it in due to the cover of the pacifier popping up from the blood splatter. That is exactly the kind of humor one needs to get through "Man Bites Dog."
Fat Girl - Criterion CollectionFat Girl - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $17.78
The ending. Wow.
Vampyr - Criterion CollectionVampyr - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $21.00
Those who I viewed this with didn't like it. I found it to be a dark meditation and a masterpiece of cinematography.
Spirit of the Beehive - Criterion CollectionSpirit of the Beehive - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $19.97
This is such a quiet movie about a young girl's imagination. I think we all can relate to this.
Berlin Alexanderplatz - Criterion CollectionBerlin Alexanderplatz - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $104.49 / Used from: $70.99
I am still wading my way through this monolith.
Two-Lane Blacktop - Criterion CollectionTwo-Lane Blacktop - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $17.97
I bought this off a whim, and was not disappointed. I am not a fan of "car" movies, but this is beyond that, as it has a deep existential silver lining and a completely original ending.
The Milky Way (Criterion Collection)The Milky Way (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $12.98
This should have been right up my alley because I am a fan of Bunuel, surrealism, and poking fun of religion, but I just didn't find this to be much fun. Perhaps I need to see it again...
Equinox (Criterion Collection)Equinox (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $22.99
To me, this is the King of Cheese. "Equinox" is a meditation in camp, and also a modest example of what can be made out of nothing.
The Man Who Fell to Earth - Criterion CollectionThe Man Who Fell to Earth - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $31.49 / Used from: $12.98
I found it at a used book store and it will probably end up back there.
Mon Oncle Antoine - Criterion CollectionMon Oncle Antoine - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $14.53
Same as the David Bowie movie.
Richard III - Criterion CollectionRichard III - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $10.25
WR: Mysteries of the Organism (Criterion Collection)WR: Mysteries of the Organism (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $24.96
I don't like it as much as "Sweet Movie", but this has its own flavor, and it's a funny one. This is an absurd movie, and totally likeable.
Jigoku - Criterion CollectionJigoku - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $10.50
This seemed to drag on through the first half and got a little monotonous, but the second part makes up for it, making this a solid film.
Simon of the Desert - Criterion CollectionSimon of the Desert - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $18.10
Bunuel hates it when people try to find meaning in his movies, but this is an entertaining mess of a movie, especially for the educated atheist.
Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters - Criterion CollectionMishima: A Life in Four Chapters - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $24.49
This is an incredibly unique film about an incredibly unique man. I love how the film transitions through the past, the present and Mishima’s literary works. Philip Glass’ soundtrack fits in perfectly.
Bicycle Thieves (Criterion Collection)Bicycle Thieves (Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $21.95
Often times, a lot of movies try to focus on huge events to crush a man and make an audience feel sorry for him. In this case, the reaction is ten-fold and the triggered event is miniscule. This is a perfect movie.
Wild Strawberries - Criterion CollectionWild Strawberries - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $13.33
Bergman is philosopher, and this movie proves it. Never before in film has there been a more precise meditation on life and death.
The Virgin Spring - Criterion CollectionThe Virgin Spring - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $34.49 / Used from: $22.95
This is typical Bergman due to the philosophic touch, but this film, based on an ancient poem, is also more formulated and brighter than most of Bergman's work.
The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)The Royal Tenenbaums (The Criterion Collection)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $6.29
The epitaph on Royal's grave was the nail in the coffin (pun intended) to cement this as an unforgetable and moving experience.
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Special Edition)The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Criterion Collection (2-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $6.83
The swamp leech scene had me on the floor.
Dazed & Confused - Criterion CollectionDazed & Confused - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $15.89
All right, all right, all right...heh heh heh.
Brand Upon the Brain! - Criterion CollectionBrand Upon the Brain! - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $14.99
Guy Maddin is a trip, and this film really out-does his previous stuff. That is saying a lot.
Fanny and Alexander (The Theatrical Version) - Criterion CollectionFanny and Alexander (The Theatrical Version) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $13.95
This film gave me more chills and goosebumps than anything I have ever seen. It also scared me. This is such a moving film.
The Last EmperorThe Last Emperor
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $15.90
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Two-Disc Special Edition)

It was on sale.
Brazil - The Criterion Collection (3-Disc Boxed Set)Brazil - The Criterion Collection (3-Disc Boxed Set)
Buy new: $53.99 / Used from: $28.20
The last 20 minutes of the director's cut is genius.
Haxan (Witchcraft Through the Ages) - Criterion CollectionHaxan (Witchcraft Through the Ages) - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $18.99
I used to date a girl who thought she practiced witchcraft, and she took this movie seriously. That, in itself, is funnier than this movie.
Europa - Criterion CollectionEuropa - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $35.49 / Used from: $23.99
I need to watch this again.
Grey Gardens - Criterion CollectionGrey Gardens - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $23.37
This is a culture-shock for most of the population. However, through all of the clutter, there is strong warmth to be found...which is also a heart-breaking sense of co-dependency. This should be shown in psychology classes.
