![]() | Cranford
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $21.43 My new favorite period piece!
![]() | North & South
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $20.29 Someone suggested this movie to me a few years ago, apparently when it was new, but it took me a while to get to it...now I am hooked, hooked, hooked! Elizabeth Gaskell's stories are superb!

![]() | Sense & Sensibility (with Miss Austen Regrets) (BBC TV 2008)
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $27.23 I love Emma Thompson's version--but I love this one, too! I can own both and be a happy camper!
![]() | Emma
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.02 How many times have I watched my copy? Don't ask, I have no idea! I just love to "be there," at Highbury! The dialogue is the best, I can't stand to miss a word.
![]() | Ella Enchanted (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $3.55 I'm topping the list with a fun, light-hearted pseudo period movie with GREAT 70's remakes music throughout! NOT faithful to the book that inspired it, but a genuine "feel good" movie!
![]() | Persuasion
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $6.49 I've seen the new Masterpiece Theater version, and it's good, but I prefer this version. It is slow starting, like most period novels are, but the direction is quite extraordinary; it feels so real.
![]() | Lorna Doone
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $7.99 I like this movie a lot; the down-home folks vying against the aristocracy and winning! I like that it's a longer movie, too.
![]() | Daniel Deronda
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.14 This is another long movie, only it's divided into sections. You can watch it in "episodes" if need be. Very well done, with an excellent ending.
![]() | Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre, 2006)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $18.30 I recently saw this version and just loved it. I have the version with Anna Paquin as the young Jane Eyre, and that one is really good for a whittled down version. This version is "more."
![]() | The Mayor of Casterbridge
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.90 This is just excellent; casting, direction, scenery, reproduction. It is long and broody, not necessarily a "feel good" movie, but quality, and it does have a semi-good ending.
![]() | The Phantom of the Opera (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.49 / Used from: $3.52 I've never seen a Broadway musical, so I can't comment on its authenticity, but it is a riveting story, and very, very well sung! Wow!
![]() | Kidnapped
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.49 You really have to either pay close attention, or turn on the subtitles; the accents are authentic and strong! But what a GREAT movie!
![]() | Amazing Grace
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $2.05 Why this film got virtually "ignored" is beyond me except for the fact that it is so true to the true story; so pure, I guess that explains it somehow. It really is Amazing.
![]() | Bleak House
Buy new: $29.99 / Used from: $19.95 I am a huge Dickens fan, but I haven't read this novel, I guess I feel I don't need to after seeing this mini-series--love it! It couldn't be better as far as costume, dialogue and sets are concerned.
![]() | David Copperfield
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $17.85 Very well done--and interesting to see Daniel Radcliffe pre-Harry Potter!
![]() | The Old Curiosity Shop
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.71 Oh, so sad, but so good! I'm looking forward to seeing the new version with Sophie Vavasseur (the child actor in that excellent movie "Evelyn") as Nell Trent.
![]() | Our Mutual Friend
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.75 I'm adding this one as a "like to see."
![]() | Miss Potter
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.99 Love, love this movie! I don't care what the real Miss Potter purists say, I've read her story in Wikipedia at least, and this movie version is close enough to the true story to satisfy me!
![]() | The Secret Garden
Buy used from: $3.19 This is my favorite film version, and it's true to the book. Kate Maberly, by the by, has a bit part in Daniel Deronda--see if you can spot her in that film!
![]() | Little Women (Collector's Series)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $3.40 Aside from Claire Danes playing an absolutely terrifying Beth, in my opinion, this movie is just perfect. I especially love to watch it at Christmas time for some reason.
![]() | The Inheritance
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $3.95 Another Louisa Mae Alcott story. Warning: it isn't high-quality as direction goes. The two main male leads excel despite it, but the rest of the characters come off a bit cheesy. But, its a "feel good" title. Very light-hearted and sweet.
![]() | Nanny McPhee (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $3.82 The ending leaned a bit far from what is merely colorful and fantastical in the rest of the movie, into cheesy--but this is a charming "feel good" movie nonetheless. Emma Thompson is a very good screen play writer as well as actress.
![]() | Road to Avonlea Season 4
Buy new: $79.99 / Used from: $38.34 I'm adding this season, season 4 of Road to Avonlea, because it's the one I own right now--but if you like Anne of Green Gables, you should see all the seasons. They are SO pricey, so I won't own them all anytime soon myself, but I can watch any of the episodes over and over.
![]() | Middlemarch
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.95 I finally saw Middlemarch, and I was so impressed. Of course it was filmed long before Cranford, but it's the same idea: a village and the goings-on of it's inhabitants. SO well done and very inspiring. Dorothea is a WONDERFUL character!
