That's AllThat's All by Mel Tormé
Buy used from: $3.19
Maybe my favorite, but that is a hard thing to say with Mel Torme. A man who had his voice stay with him throughout his years. His live albums are outstanding as well.
Jazz 'Round Midnight: Mel TorméJazz 'Round Midnight: Mel Tormé by Mel Tormé
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $4.14
A great primer for Mel Torme . . . his arrangements and his instrument.
Swingin' On the Moon [Verve]Swingin' On the Moon [Verve] by Mel Torme
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.49
This is definitely my wife's favorite Mel Torme album. This was a theme album in the early 60's remastered to current high standards. "How high the moon?" is a cover of a standard that is not equaled by many (if any).
After Midnight: The Complete SessionAfter Midnight: The Complete Session by Nat King Cole Trio
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.78
This is my very favorite Nat Cole album. The arrangements are excellent and the recording quality is very good. A night with Nat will calm your soul.
Big Band ColeBig Band Cole by Nat King Cole
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $1.99
Interesting album with wonderful big bands of Stan Kenton and Count Basie playing behind an immortal voice.
A Voice in Time: 1939-1952A Voice in Time: 1939-1952 by Frank Sinatra
Buy new: $23.97 / Used from: $30.76
Remastered from all eras of Sinatra's career, these recordings give a fair 'soup to nuts' compilation. This remastering is superior to earlier remaster efforts in his earlier career recordings especially. For his themed albums, one should obtain those individaully so they can be heard in their original order.
In the Wee Small HoursIn the Wee Small Hours by Frank Sinatra
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $4.44
Perhaps his best themed album (in my humble opinion) . . . from his post Eva Gardner period. . . good music. Other wonderful alternatives include; Only the Lonely, Where Are You? and No One Cares.
John Coltrane & Johnny HartmanJohn Coltrane & Johnny Hartman by John Coltrane with Johnny Hartman
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.35
The only John Coltrane album ever with a vocalist. Johnny Hartman is quite a vocalist and Coltrane plays smoothly and behind Hartman's baritone . . . a classic jazz allbum.
Collection: 1947-1972Collection: 1947-1972 by Johnny Hartman
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $12.44
Johnny Hartman is the most under-rated vocalist of his era. An excellent voice with soulful staying power. He is not mentioned often enough when discussing the classic voices of his era. He can hold his own with anyone. A single disk alternative to this selection is "Hartman for Lovers"
Every Day: The Best of the Verve YearsEvery Day: The Best of the Verve Years by Joe Williams
Buy new: $22.98 / Used from: $6.00
A very good soulful singer with good arrangements. Joe sang in front of Count Basieand his band for a number of years. Recording quality is from Verve's masters. A good combination.
Helen Merrill with Clifford BrownHelen Merrill with Clifford Brown by Helen Merrill with Clifford Brown
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.77
Another classic Jazz album , , , voted as the best jazz album in the last half of the twentieth century a few years back. Merrill was quite young a sang effortlessly and Brownie was . . . well, Brownie.
Sarah Vaughan W/ Clifford BrownSarah Vaughan W/ Clifford Brown by Sarah Vaughan and Clifford Brown
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.94
An unbelievable talent with a three octave range . . . accompanied by the master -Clifford Brown.
The Best of Peggy Lee - The Capitol YearsThe Best of Peggy Lee - The Capitol Years by Peggy Lee
Buy new: $11.94 / Used from: $6.31
A great voice and a very fair representation of her years with Capital Records. Black Coffee from the Decca days is a good alternative.
Nina Simone Sings the BluesNina Simone Sings the Blues by Nina Simone
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.50
A classically trained pianist , , , with a soulful vocal delivery . . . when Nina was on . . . no one was better.
TemptationTemptation by Holly Cole
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $2.10
Holly Cole is wonderful and one of the the most under-rated modern vocalists in the business. A beautiful singer with her own take on her arrangements. It is always a pleasure to listen, relax and reflect with Holly Cole.
Don't Smoke in BedDon't Smoke in Bed by Holly Cole Trio
Buy new: $32.99 / Used from: $3.16
This trio is a modern version of the classic trio's from the classic era of jazz. Cole's voice is captivating.
Taking a Chance on LoveTaking a Chance on Love by Jane Monheit
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.90
Jane Monheit has the voice to do justice to the standards she covers from another era. Her arrangements are understated to allow her instrument to take a well known song where it may not have ever been (before Jane). Over the Rainbow is an experience unto itself.
Give Him the Ooh La LaGive Him the Ooh La La by Blossom Dearie
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $4.95
An exceptional pianist with angel-like voice. Blossom is a treasure and always worth a listening session. This album (or any of her Verve albums) will not disappoint.
Good Night, And Good LuckGood Night, And Good Luck by Dianne Reeves
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.88
I rarely recommend soundtracks but this one is special. Dianne Reeves puts a classic rendition of 50's standards. An interesting album.
CollectionCollection by Stacey Kent
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $8.88
Stacey Kent has a wonderful voice, the accompaniment is excellent and the recording is audiophile quality. You can not go wrong.
