Hammer Horror Series (Brides of Dracula / Curse of the Werewolf / Phantom of the Opera (1962) / Paranoiac / Kiss of the Vampire / Nightmare / Night Creatures / Evil of Frankenstein)Hammer Horror Series (Brides of Dracula / Curse of the Werewolf / Phantom of the Opera (1962) / Paranoiac / Kiss of the Vampire / Nightmare / Night Creatures / Evil of Frankenstein)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $18.93
(C for just "Evil of Frankenstein" and "Night Creatures") Two more Hammer films, not some of their better known ones and not w/o reason. They pass the time okay, and that's about as much good as you can say for these two. Cushing is cool, though, as usual.
The QueenThe Queen
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $1.88
(B+) I was skeptical, but "The Queen" proved worth the watch. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a well put together, interesting and often surprisingly funny movie.
Let's Scare Jessica to DeathLet's Scare Jessica to Death
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.18
(A-) A terrific, legitimately creepy, slow-moving horror film. It's not often that I get to see a truly excellent horror movie that I've not seen before anymore, so this was quite a treat.
The Oblong Box / Scream and Scream AgainThe Oblong Box / Scream and Scream Again
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.95
(B- for "Oblong", C+ for "Scream...") "The Oblong Box" is yet another pseudo-Poe adaptation featuring Vincent Price. It's a bit grittier than some of the earlier ones, but it's much in the same vein. Enjoyable enough, if far from special. "Scream and Scream Again" is more flawed, but it's plot is just so damn weird that I think it's worth one watch.
Basket Case (20th Anniversary Special Edition)Basket Case (20th Anniversary Special Edition)
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $5.50
(B) Incredibly cheap and schlocky even for this kinda thing, but it has true low-budget charm and, of all things, heart. You don't get much of that in cheapie horror films.
InfectionInfection
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $1.73
(B-) Has many of the problems associated with Japanese horror i.e. uncertain pacing and a gratuitously incoherent plot, but it has some legitimately effective scenes too and isn't as totally mired in the cliches of the genre as some of the other entries. (It's still far from original overall, but it's better than average in this respect)
Zatoichi, Episode 4: The FugitiveZatoichi, Episode 4: The Fugitive
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $6.33
(C+) They've all been slow thus far, but this Zatoichi film is just stuck in neutral forever. It still has a good climax, and Zatoichi is still a cool character, but it definitely drags at times.
ShutterShutter
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.75
(B-) This is just another 'Ring' clone, but a superior, genuinely scary one. . .for the first hour. After that point it slowly falls apart, with some silly scenes and a severe case of over-ghosting. These movies work better when you don't see the ghost much. When you do see her, you realize she's just some Asian chick in not particularly good makeup. Too bad, it coulda been excellent.
Highlander (The Immortal Edition)Highlander (The Immortal Edition)
Buy used from: $1.15
(B) A complete and utter cheesefest, but that's the fun. This is just about the most 80's-y movie ever, except maybe Rocky IV.
Seance on a Wet AfternoonSeance on a Wet Afternoon
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $8.33
(A-) A sad, tragic film about an unsuccessful medium's attempt to gain publicity by kidnapping a wealthy couple's child and then gaining publicity by helping with the investigation. A very dark, adult movie with terrific lead performances. Should be better remembered than it is.
Cello (2005)Cello (2005)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $3.18
(C+) Another standard Asian vengeful ghost movie. It avoids lotsa of the standard pitfalls of the genre, but doesn't find anything particularly inspiring to put in their place. Passable, but nothing much more than that.
The Legend of Hell HouseThe Legend of Hell House
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.42
(B) A solid, interesting and relatively intelligent haunted house film, though the final revelation is a bit. . .bizarre.
The Brotherhood of SatanThe Brotherhood of Satan
Buy used from: $2.92
(B-) A cheap 'Rosemary's Baby' derivation from the 70's. A bit campy at times, no doubt, but also a bit creepy if you can get into it. Worth a watch for dedicated horror fans.
Spider ForestSpider Forest
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.05
(B) An Asian Supernatural thriller from the past decade that isn't a 'Ring' knockoff. Yes, they do exist, apparently. Well-made and involving mystery-thriller-drama, though it could stand to be trimmed a bit, especially the opening.
KomaKoma
Buy used from: $2.04
(B-) Thriller from Hong Kong involving organ theft and with an inexplicably circuitous plot. Nothing too special, but it passes the time.
The ManitouThe Manitou
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $6.49
(B-) The reincarnated fetus of some Indian mystic grows out of a chicks neck. This sounds like a classic camp horror premise, and it is, though it's hampered by a painfully talkly first hour. After that, though, it delivers on the goofiness like you wouldn't believe. Climax must be seen to be believed.
Christmas EvilChristmas Evil
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.86
(B+) You may expect another holiday slasher, but this is something much odder and, yes, more ambitious. Here crazed Harry turns into a sort of pro-Christmas vigilante. It's surprisingly well made and Maggart is quite good in the lead. Kim Newman called it a cross of "Miracle on 34th Street" and "Death Wish", and that says about everything. This one's got a crazy ending too.
The New WorldThe New World
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.80
(B-) As you would anticipate for Malick's follow up to "The Thin Red Line", this is a very beautiful and mind-bogglingly pretentious film. It's a long watch, no doubt, but it has enough points of interest to be worth it.
The MaidThe Maid
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $2.28
(B-) This Asian horror film has got a very sympathetic lead performance from de Rossi and a more intriguing than usual setup, but it's held back by the standard vengeful ghost cliches that dominate the film as a whole.
The 39 Steps (Criterion Collection Spine #56)The 39 Steps (Criterion Collection Spine #56)
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $22.95
(B) Hitchcock's first really big film, or so I'm told. Like any film from 1935, it's severely dated in a lot of ways, but it holds up better than most, for sure. Not nearly as good as some of his later thrillers, but it points towards them, and is a brisk, entertaining watch. It's a tad on the implausible side, even as such films go, but I can excuse it.
Conqueror Worm (Vincent Price Collection)Conqueror Worm (Vincent Price Collection)
Buy used from: $1.75
(B+) Better known as "The Witchfinder General". An extremely grim historical horror film, and quite gruesome for the time. Well-acted and well-made, though the synth replacement score needed because of legal problems is extraordinarily cheesy. Hopefully I'll get to see the original version on DVD someday.
Trilogy of TerrorTrilogy of Terror
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $12.99
(B) This one's kinda tough to rate, cause it's an anthology and the first two are pretty vanilla apart from Black's goofily amusing performances. The "Prey/Amelia" segment, however, is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. It has quite possibly the finest attack puppet in the history of film.
Blood on Satan's Claw [VHS]Blood on Satan's Claw [VHS]
Buy used from: $14.99
(B) The plot here is sometimes less than coherent, but this is still a better than usual and rather grimy Satanic cult horror movie. I particularly like the atypical 17th century setting and the numerous outdoor scenes which both give it a different flavor from and more powerful atmosphere than most of the British horror films of the day. Needs a DVD release.
The OtherThe Other
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $6.79
(B-) An incredibly low-key horror film, sorta thing you don't see much today. Frankly, it's a little too flat, even for me, but it has enough nasty ideas and images to maintain interest. The major twist is very obvious now, though it may have been more suprising 35 years ago. Kinda seems like I should like this one more than I did, I'll have to watch it again someday.
Letters from Iwo Jima (Two-Disc Special Edition)Letters from Iwo Jima (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $3.35
(B+) Some viewers will tell you this is "just another war film". True enough, but it's a pretty damn good one. Formulaic, but they work the formula well. I don't like the "everything is brown and green" color correction, though. I assume it's meant to suggest age, but it does the opposite, since this sorta color manipulation is a distinctly contemporary phenomenon.
Dr. Phibes Rises Again!Dr. Phibes Rises Again!
Buy used from: $1.78
(B-) Not as much fun as the first one, but it's still entertaining enough.
Frankenstein's Bloody TerrorFrankenstein's Bloody Terror
Buy new: $19.95 / Used from: $9.00
(B-) Spain's answer to the Hammer Gothics proves pretty comparable to them, though with some delightfully goofy plot developments. For the record, this movie has werewolves and vampires, but no Frankenstein or Frankenstein's monster.
Cry of the Banshee / Murders in the Rue MorgueCry of the Banshee / Murders in the Rue Morgue
Buy used from: $12.19
(C for both) These are both well mounted, but get no help from the scripts. "Murders..." script is just a repetition muddle, whereas "Cry..." suffers from its opportunism and the decision to make the witchhunters cruel hypocrites while the witches are real and evil, a dramatically idiotic choice. Still, the films have some appealing performances, from Dwyer and Price and Robbards.
Air BudAir Bud
Buy used from: $6.52
(D) This is what happens when you lose control of the remote. It's been years since I've seen lousy children's movies with any regularity, but this seemed real bad even for such things. Also, Bud only plays in like half of one game. What a rip.
