Nigel Spivey takes the viewer through a series of events, examining how art is used and how it affects us in our world today... sometimes making a stretch to show a connection, in my opinion... but still a exceptional series, for young and old.

This series is superb! It takes ageless pieces of art and talks about how they were relevant then as well as today.

If you ever want to see how a person can talk about art, and make the listener FEEL what they are saying, have them watch Sister Wendy... She is not the furthermost scholar on the subject, by any means... but students generally love her... she covers some of her favorite works in Europe on this disc set.

The host of this show is a little loud, and to be honest...is not as well done as Shama's or Spivey's dvd set (the glares off of the paintings are a distraction)...I even think Sister Wendy's are done better. I do like the way he is shown on location, however.

This is a nicely done series, featuring Peter Weller (former Robocop)... it takes the great cultures from the world, and shows how their technological and sometimes artistic innovations helped them build their empires. I love this series, and try to show it in class when possible.

Based on the book of the same name, this is a great documentary for any class, APAH or history class... Covers the Nazi attack on the art world, the Monuments Men, and America's role in the return (and theft) of art as well...the repercussions which are still being felt today. Great for discussion in class.

Every disc in this box set is good: documentaries on the Medici, Romans and Greeks headline the collection. These can be bought separately as well.

First set of a series, focusing on Barbarian tribes...

Great documentary on Napoleon.

Did I mention this series is one of the best? ok... just checking.

I have this season on "pre-order"... but have been watching them on PBS. Jeff Koons (besides being a favorite of mine) is featured, and shows how his art is produced.. once again, I don't think you can miss with any of these.

I think being familiar with Joseph Campbell is a must for any APAH teacher... but that may just be me.

Have you ever wanted to try and prove your piece of art is worth millions? Watch this movie first: One woman's journey to prove her abstract-expressionist painting is an authentic Pollock...it all starts with her saying "Who the #$&% is Jackson Pollock?"

What is art? I mean...really? This is great to watch, and have a discussion with your class... a child (abstract expressionist) who sells her paintings for thousands of dollars, and the parents who are at the center of a whirlwind of controversy.

Dvd shows the major pieces of the Vatican collection.

Documentary about the many facets of Islam, and how people live according to how they interpret the Koran... discusses the full range from pious to extremist. I have a few criticisms on the production (using dark music at times)...NOTE: Trying to be an unbiased movie, they show many aspects of Islam, including female genitalia mutilation... so you may want to watch this before viewing in class.

Ties the Constantinople of yesteryear with the Istanbul of today.
