![]() | Gojira / Godzilla Deluxe Collector's Edition (Gojira/Godzilla [1954] / Godzilla, King of the Monsters [1956])
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $7.00 The original in its original presentation. Too many people are unaware how effective and haunting an allegory for Hiroshima and nuclear warfare this film truly is.
![]() | Godzilla Raids Again
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $6.99 In comparison to what was coming in Godzilla's future, this film isn't much to write home about. Still, it's still a solid entry, and introduced us to the titular monster's very first monster foe, Anguirus (who later became Godzilla's ally, and a fan favorite of the series).
![]() | Mothra vs. Godzilla
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.35 Widely regarded as one of the finest in the whole series. While I think it's slightly overrated, it's still a classic.
![]() | Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $8.98 This is where the series begins to take a different approach: more light-hearted. And the balance between good solid action and goofball comedy is very well-done. Plus, it introduced us to GHIDORAH himself! Still a stunning creation.
![]() | Invasion of Astro-Monster (aka Monster Zero)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.59 In many ways superior to its predecessor. One of the "quintessential" Godzilla movies.
![]() | Godzilla vs. the Sea Monster
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $6.79 This is an old favorite of mine. Apparently the script was originally written as a starring vehicle for King Kong, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the most entertaining Godzilla films.
![]() | Son of Godzilla
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $7.10 Ah, Minilla . . . what character in the entire Godzilla canon has polarized more fans? That, plus the worst-looking Godzilla suit ever, aside, it's almost as solid an entry as the previous one.
![]() | All Monsters Attack (aka Godzilla's Revenge)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.94 Universally maligned, but unreasonably so; you have to watch this one in the right context, as a real children's fantasy. On that level, it delivers. (Although personally, even as a little kid I would have much preferred to chill out on Monster Island with Rodan or Anguirus than stupid Minilla.)
![]() | Godzilla Vs Hedorah
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.89 THIS one's weird. Perhaps the most unusual film in the series, but it's all the richer for it. Also, the battle scenes rank among the finest in the series.
![]() | Godzilla vs. Gigan
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.98 Looks a tad cheap at times, but still very entertaining. Gigan remains one of Godzilla's most interesting opponents.
![]() | Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $5.99 Mechagodzilla's debut, back when he was still an alien menace and not some human-operated mindless robot. King Caesar's pointless, but luckily this film isn't.
![]() | Terror of Mechagodzilla
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.64 Superior to its predecessor in more ways than one. The last of the original series, and it's an overall worthy send-off.
![]() | Godzilla Vs Mechagodzilla II
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $4.85 The Heisei Series is such a mixed bag, and unfortunately this one is the only one available on quality DVD. They screwed up Rodan and made Mechagodzilla a wuss devoid of personality, but it's actually not a BAD film by any means.
![]() | Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah - Giant Monsters All-Out Attack
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $4.78 IMHO, skip the rest of the Millennium Series (1999-2004). They're either just plain boring, or just plain bad. Only this one, from the director who brought us the '90s Gamera Trilogy, is worthwhile, and it's also one of the best Godzilla films ever made.
