In comparison to what was coming in Godzilla's future, this film isn't much to write home about. Still, it's still a solid entry, and introduced us to the titular monster's very first monster foe, Anguirus (who later became Godzilla's ally, and a fan favorite of the series).

This is where the series begins to take a different approach: more light-hearted. And the balance between good solid action and goofball comedy is very well-done. Plus, it introduced us to GHIDORAH himself! Still a stunning creation.

This is an old favorite of mine. Apparently the script was originally written as a starring vehicle for King Kong, but that doesn't stop it from being one of the most entertaining Godzilla films.

Universally maligned, but unreasonably so; you have to watch this one in the right context, as a real children's fantasy. On that level, it delivers. (Although personally, even as a little kid I would have much preferred to chill out on Monster Island with Rodan or Anguirus than stupid Minilla.)

Looks a tad cheap at times, but still very entertaining. Gigan remains one of Godzilla's most interesting opponents.

Superior to its predecessor in more ways than one. The last of the original series, and it's an overall worthy send-off.

IMHO, skip the rest of the Millennium Series (1999-2004). They're either just plain boring, or just plain bad. Only this one, from the director who brought us the '90s Gamera Trilogy, is worthwhile, and it's also one of the best Godzilla films ever made.
