It features outstanding performances by Denzell Washington (who won his first Academy Award for this role) and Morgan Freeman. The scene where Denzell Washington is whipped for an infraction is chilling. He does not utter a sound but his face and demeanor speak volumes.

Shelby Foote, the noted Civil War historian lends a particular presence to the film and it is good to see African American historians commenting also. This series started Ken Burns' career and ushered in the documentary as entertainment.
