![]() | The Outlaw Josey Wales
Buy used from: $3.20 The Civil War started as a conventional struggle, and this fight ended in April 1865. But there was a war within the war, that began in "Bleeding Kansas" in the 1850s and extended into the 1870s... this is a movie about that and how insurgencies are sustained by hate; but also how they end with reconciliation... born of fatigue if not necessarily forgiveness.

![]() | The Battle of Algiers - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $37.99 / Used from: $29.84 This movie is enjoying something of a rebirth. It is important, however, to know how to separate fact from fiction. This is a movie that glorifies the winner, for all that it is remarkably even-handed. Remember that the FLN was decisively beaten in this fight... their later victory came at the political table. Read "A Savage War of Peace" and “Battle of the Casbah” if you want the whole story.

![]() | The Untouchables
Buy used from: $1.95 How do you intervene in a clannish system? How do you separate the corrupt local officials from the ones you can trust? How do you operate in a system where you cannot trust anyone and where no one wants you to succeed? At what point does a criminal problem become insurgency, and what makes an enemy a bandit rather than a revolutionary? Elliott Ness had to deal with this in Chicago...

Buy used from: $2.49 This one is hard to find... it's out of print. Make the effort. This is the fictionalized movie version of "Coup d'etat, A Practical Handbook" by Edward Luttwak... which is well worth reading. This movie turns Luttwak's treatise into an account of how, once you get on a slippery slope, it's hard to keep from sliding. Hint: Watch for some sly historical jokes in the names of the major characters.

![]() | It Happened Here
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.50 Most movies about insurgency focus on the military competitors... but it's really not about them. Insurgencies are really about the people, the great majority who just want to be left alone. This is a movie about those people, about the choices and accommodations they have to make in order to survive... morally as well as physically, in an England under Nazi occupation.

![]() | In the Heat of the Night
Buy used from: $2.00 It wasn't that long ago that the USA was a tribalized society, divided sharply along ethnic lines. This is a movie about that time, when people were willing to kill out of virulent hatred of those who would change their cherished ways.

![]() | The Last Valley
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $4.20 This is a complex sociological tale following the interplay and shifting alliances between an academic, a priest, a village elder, and a mercenary. Political disagreement? Religious fanaticism? Tribe / clan loyalty and conservatism versus outside influence? Appeals to reason and attempts at peacemaking? They're all present in this well-made film.
