Night Shift (Keep Case)Night Shift (Keep Case)
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.98
There is such great chemistry between Keaton and Winkler in this film. Every time I watch it, I find something else to laugh at. A great deal of the humor in this film is found in the dialogue. A classic and never seems to get old featuring a great 1980’s soundtrack and even better one liners, “LOVE BROKERS!!!!”
Blade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition)Blade Runner (Five-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $70.99 / Used from: $31.98
This movie is a perfect example of neo-film noir with a wonderful cast, cinematography, musical score and set design. I personally prefer the version with Deckard’s narration it seems to be the version closest to the novel. In addition, I really don’t think the so called “happy ending” is really that jovial.
Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition)Somewhere in Time (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.95
A classic romance movie with a time travel twist. Christopher Reeve is a playwright who becomes obsessed with an actress (Jane Seymour) who was at her zenith in 1912. Reeve is able to go back to 1912 to meet this performer. A cult classic that is accompanied by a haunting and beautiful soundtrack by John Barry.
Eyes Wide Shut (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition)Eyes Wide Shut (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $30.99
What a great film, very dreamy and strange. This film plays more like a mystic fairy tale for adults. This movie takes some time to develop, yet the process is what makes it wonderful. Excellent lighting and musical score in this film, also one of Tom Cruises’ better acting performances.
One Hour Photo (Widescreen Edition)One Hour Photo (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $0.39
I almost forget I am watching Robin Williams in this movie. His performance in this film is a polar opposite of Mrs. Doubtfire. The epitome of a psychological thriller that is visually astonishing to witness. The musical score also adds to the mood of this film.
Carnival of Souls - Criterion CollectionCarnival of Souls - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $32.49 / Used from: $13.90
The paradigm of the original independent movie that goes to show that lots of money isn’t need to make a great movie. The minimalism in this film is what makes it so creepy. The nominal effects and mood really promote an eerie experience.
Corvette SummerCorvette Summer
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.21
I know that this movie is a bit campy, but I love it. Corvette Summer really puts the 1970’s in a time capsule. It is really cool to see Mark Hamill playing someone other than Luke Skywalker. Annie Potts is also very funny as a “wannabe” hooker. The style of clothes might have aged in this film, but not the humor.
MementoMemento
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.00
Guy Pearce was unbelievable in this movie as a man trying to solve a murder while he suffers from short-term memory loss. The supporting cast is great, as is the score, but the real treat is the way this film is edited. Memento is also a neo-film noir.
Scarface (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)Scarface (Widescreen Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.38
What can I say, like Robin Williams in One Hour Photo, I forget I am watching Al Pacino in this film. In other words, Al performs one of his best roles on screen. A very violent movie and I believe the F Bomb is dropped about six hundred times.
Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)Dawn of the Dead (Ultimate Edition)
Buy new: $34.99 / Used from: $12.99
This is the ultimate zombie movie is presented in a four disc box set. Dawn of the Dead has it all, horror, action, comedy and a shopping mall. A must buy for a true horror fan.
The Phantom of the Opera (1929 re-release)The Phantom of the Opera (1929 re-release)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.43
What a timeless silent movie. Lon Chaney is still scary as hell in this horror classic. Wonderful story, wonderful set design, wonderful silent movie. This version has a color tint to it and added musical score, which gives this film a different interpretation.
Clerks (Three-Disc 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition)Clerks (Three-Disc 10th Anniversary Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $23.49 / Used from: $6.49
This movie shows that money isn’t needed to induce humor. Clerks shows the satire in the realm of customer service. The fact that this film was shot in black and white really gives this movie character. I feel Kevin Smith has yet to top Clerks.
Taxi Driver (Collector's Edition)Taxi Driver (Collector's Edition)
Buy used from: $3.52
Is it a Grindhouse film, is it an exploitation film or is just an avant-garde film? Robert DeNiro displays excellent character development as Travis Bickle in this movie. What a wonderful vision of abnormal psychology that Martin Scorsese paints.
SolarisSolaris
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $0.95
Solaris is a dream like sci-fi romance film (with a dark sub text and strong philosophical themes) in the midst of beautiful cinematography and a mesmerizing ambient soundtrack. The performance for George Clooney very different from most roles he had tackled up to that point in his career.
About Last Night...About Last Night...
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.17
Love to hate it, hate to love it. This movie has captured the 1980’s and uses it as its backdrop for the hot and cold, cold then hot, bipolar love affair between Rob Lowe and Demi Moore. By the time this movie is over, you might not care about anyone or last night….
