Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Special Edition)Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $9.95
The first in the legendary adventure trilogy. The earnest, intrepid and determined hero! The humour! The action! Supernatural threats as an evil regime meddles in ancient secrets best left alone! This film has it all.
Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Special Edition)Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $6.74
The second of the Indiana Jones films - but actually a prequel! Again good fun. These films are the kings of the genre.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition)Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (Special Edition)
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $6.54
The third Indiana Jones film. More helpings of enjoyable, fun, rollicking adventure just like its two prior episodes, with characters we now know and relate to.
King Solomon's MinesKing Solomon's Mines
Buy used from: $6.45
An adaptation of the classic H. Rider Haggard novel. The action is brought forward from the 1890s to the 1930s for an Indiana Jones-style swaggering action-adventure. More pun-prone than Indiana Jones and more tongue-in-cheek than its 1937 and 1950 predecessors. It doesn't quite succeed, but is worth a watch and is pretty good given its low budget.
Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of GoldAllan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold
Buy used from: $3.58
Richard Chamberlain again plays Alan Quartermain in another H. Rider Haggard adaptation. As previously, Chamberlain doesn't quite have Harrison Ford's charisma or self-effacing mumbling brio to carry the role, and is perhaps a bit too jokey overall. However, this sequel was considered by critics to be more successful outing than King Solomon's Mines in trying to adapt the Indiana Jones formula.
High Road to China [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Sweden ]High Road to China [ NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.2 Import - Sweden ]
Buy used from: $18.99
A great adventure movie starring the 'almost' Indiana Jones actor, Tom Selleck.
Romancing the Stone (Special Edition)Romancing the Stone (Special Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.14
A lot of fun, and the most successful - on its own terms - of the Indiana Jones clones. Also, rather than going all historical on us, this film is set in more recent times. The chemistry between Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas as the two protagonists and the regular doses of sexual innuendo power this film along a riotous adventure ride.
The Jewel of the Nile (Special Edition)The Jewel of the Nile (Special Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.50
Still fun, but more over-the-top than its predecessor. The F-16 scene is a bit too much, but overall The Jewel of the Nile is corny good fun. This film lays the groundwork for the corny-adventure approach taken subsequently in adventure films such as the Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy.
The Mummy (Widescreen Collector's Edition)The Mummy (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $1.98
This is an entertaining, goofy and cheesy remake of the old horror film of the same title. One reviewer noted that this film has the "courage of its own clichés". The influence of the adventure films listed above are obvious and so this former horror/thriller story becomes a rollicking adventure, and so joins this list.
The Mummy Returns (Widescreen Collector's Edition)The Mummy Returns (Widescreen Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.00
Much like The Mummy, above, this sequel barely follows a similar plot-premise to its old Hollywood horror namesake; but there the similarity ends as further cheesy, good-natured adventures unfold.
Sahara (Widescreen Edition)Sahara (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.80
Clive Cussler's novel gets the Hollywood treatment with a version that shies away from the drama and plays towards comedy. A romp; a mildly successful romp. Truly, this was a film looking for a sequel but it appears the hoped-for green light was not given by studio heads.
