Beyond Black: A NovelBeyond Black: A Novel by Hilary Mantel
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $2.00
This dark, atonishing novel is about Alison Hart who works as a medium. However, unlike most fake mediums, dead people really do talk to Alison. You might think that such a gift would be a comfort but instead it is a nightmarish torment.
Being Dead: A NovelBeing Dead: A Novel by Jim Crace
Buy new: $11.20 / Used from: $0.01
One of the most lyrical, hauntingly beautiful novels I have ever read, this is a story about love and death. I taught this novel for 2 years and it never failed to disturb, excite, terrify, and amuse my students.
Night: A NovelNight: A Novel by Edna O'Brien
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $0.11
This mesmerizing novel reads like a long, lyrical poem, full of startling images, metaphors and allusions to ancient Irish mythology. The story is about Mary Hooligan, who takes us through her memories and thoughts during a long, sleepless night.
Housekeeping: A NovelHousekeeping: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $1.55
I have read this brilliant novel seven times. I've written two academic papers on it. I even taught it for 1 year in a literature/composition course, and each time I read it I STILL find something new. When people ask what my favorite novel is I always say Robinson's "Housekeeping."
Gilead: A NovelGilead: A Novel by Marilynne Robinson
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $0.01
As far as I'm concerned, Robinson can do no wrong. "Gilead" is Robinson's long-awaited second novel, which won the Pulitzer Prize. It tells the story of Reverend John Ames's life as it draws to a close. Absolutely stunning!
Written on the BodyWritten on the Body by Jeanette Winterson
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $0.01
This is an erotic, daring story about two people embarking on a passionate love affair. The book strives to answer the question raised in its opening sentence, "Why is the measure of love loss?"
The Scarlet Letter (Penguin Classics)The Scarlet Letter (Penguin Classics) by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $0.86
There is a reason why Henry James called this novel "The finest piece of imaginative writing yet put forth in the country." No matter how many times I read or teach this novel, it always yields up new insights.
The Bell JarThe Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath
Buy new: $12.20 / Used from: $2.19
This stark, beautiful novel tells the story of a smart young woman's mental breakdown in the early 1950s. When I saw the movie "Girl, Interrupted," I immediately thought of "The Bell Jar," Plath's famous, largely autobiographical novel.
House Made of Dawn (Perennial Classics)House Made of Dawn (Perennial Classics) by N. Scott Momaday
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $0.01
This stunning Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is about Abel, a young Native American who lives in two worlds: the harsh beauty of his people's land and the modern hell of the outside world.
Mrs. DallowayMrs. Dalloway by Virginia Woolf
Buy new: $9.10 / Used from: $0.01
Do yourself a favor. First, read this brilliant classic. Next, read Micheal Cunningham's "The Hours," a wonderful take on "Mrs. Dalloway." Finally, watch the academy award-winning film, "The Hours." After doing this you will have no doubt that great art builds upon great art.
AthenaAthena by John Banville
Buy new: $11.16 / Used from: $0.19
John Banville is a gifted Irish writer and, although this spellbinding novel is my favorite by a narrow margin, he has written many other terrific books, including most recently, "The Sea."
Emma (Penguin Classics)Emma (Penguin Classics) by Jane Austen
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.43
It is hard for me to pick a favorite Austen novel, but unlike, say, "Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility," Austen's "Emma" uses point of view to the greatest advantage. When I first read it I was utterly surprised by the ending. A brilliant plot! Studying Austen's literary tricks tells us much about why Harry Potter is so popular.
The Unbearable Lightness of BeingThe Unbearable Lightness of Being by Milan Kundera
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $1.72
This is a novel of ideas that also happens to be a great love story. Erotic, worldly, thoughtful and complex, this novel is a masterpiece.
LolitaLolita by Vladimir Nabokov
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.34
If there is a more self-deluded, terrifying narrator then Humbert Humbert, I have yet to encounter him. And yet, controversial as this novel is, the story is beautifully crafted and utterly compelling. This is a book that cannot be ignored.
Possession: A RomancePossession: A Romance by A.S. Byatt
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $0.01
The first thing you need to know is that the movie based on this novel is complete crap. Do yourself a favor and read the book instead, which is beautfiul beyond words. If, like me, you also majored in English or work in academia, make sure the next thing you do is read "Possession.
Moby-Dick: or, The Whale(Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)Moby-Dick: or, The Whale(Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Herman Melville
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $3.02
This is an intimidating book, even for the advanced reader, but it is one that holds great rewards. It was "Moby-Dick," along with Emily Dickinson's poetry, that first pushed me to start asking the Big Questions: Who Am I? Why am I here? Why is there evil in the world? Why death? Do we really have free choice?
The AwakeningThe Awakening by Kate Chopin
Buy new: $4.50 / Used from: $0.01
When Kate Chopin first published this novel in 1899, it shocked and angered readers who called the main character, Edna Pontellier, "sickening" and "selfish." Now, of course, it is an acknowledged masterpiece. This book proves that great writers are often far ahead of their time.
BelovedBeloved by Toni Morrison
Buy new: $6.68 / Used from: $0.49
There is no question that Toni Morrison is one of the greatest writers today, but even though I greatly admire her other novels, such as "Song of Solomon" and "Sula," for me "Beloved" is her most powerful work. This gut-wrenching story about love and the horrors of slavery will chill you to the bone.
In the Country of Last ThingsIn the Country of Last Things by Paul Auster
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.84
Paul Auster's famous "New York Trilogy" should probably be on this list, too, but if you can read only one, then read "In the Country of Last Things," which tells Anna Blume's story as she wanders in a nightmarish, unamed city searching for her brother. A classic dystopian novel!
Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics)Wuthering Heights (Penguin Classics) by Emily Brontë
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $1.16
Do I really need to sell this brilliant classic? Is there any English speaker who hasn't read, or at least heard of, this famous gothic story?
The Sun Also RisesThe Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway
Buy used from: $0.03
For me, it's no contest. Hemingway is a far superior writer than F. Scott Fitzgerald. I'd rather read "The Sun Also Rises" than "The Great Gatsby" any day. Not that I don't enjoy Fitzgerald, but Hemingway's dialogue is flawless and his characters, although broken, are brave and compelling.
Power: A NovelPower: A Novel by Linda Hogan
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $1.90
A beautiful coming of age story, this lyrical novel centers on a 16-year-old girl, a member of the Taiga Tribe. When she witnesses her Aunt Ama kill an endangered panther, she must reconcile her people's beliefs with those of the modern, scientific world.
Invisible ManInvisible Man by Ralph Ellison
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $1.79
First published in 1952, this enormously influential book about America's racial divide changed the face of literature. Both dazzling and horrifying, this novel portrays the effects of racism on both victims and perpetrators alike.
Oryx and CrakeOryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.10
Concerned about the future implications of cloning and genetic experimentation? Then, this is the book for you. The best thing about Atwood is that she is darkly, wickedly funny, even when she is telling a story with political overtones. I taught this book last year and my students wrote brilliant papers on it. A dystopian classic!
The Handmaid's TaleThe Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.81
This is Atwood's only other dystopian novel. (She loves genre-hopping. Also check out "The Blind Assassin," which I really enjoyed.) "The Handmaid's Tale" imagines a future in which the division between church and state has collapsed. It will scare the crap out of you.
The Shipping News : A NovelThe Shipping News : A Novel by Annie Proulx
Buy used from: $0.01
What can I say about this quiet, darrkly comic novel except that when I finished it I turned around and read it through again? Of course, I can tell you that it won the Pulitzer Prize, but only by reading it for yourself can you fully appreciate its stark beauty.
The House of MirthThe House of Mirth by Edith Wharton
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $6.01
This is Edith Wharton's first great novel, and even though I love her other works, especially "The Age of Innocence," I think "The House of Mirth" is her most tragic and powerful. Set in late 19th century New York, it tells the tale of Lily Bart, a young woman who is destroyed by the very society that created her.
Into the Forest: A NovelInto the Forest: A Novel by Jean Hegland
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.97
This is Jean Hegland's first novel, a fact I can hardly believe. Hegland tells the story of two sisters, Eva and Nell, whose lives are turned upside down as disease and anarchy breaks out across the country. This novel is something new, a magical, passionate journey that haunts you long after you've finished reading it.
The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer (Bantam Spectra Book)The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer (Bantam Spectra Book) by Neal Stephenson
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $2.64
This book is just, well, cool. I don't know how else to say it. A stunningly original tale, "The Diamond Age" is set in twenty-first century Shanghai. It is about what happens when a young girl, Nell, gets her hands on an amazing, state-of-the-art interactive device.
Ceremony: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition)Ceremony: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) by Leslie Marmon Silko
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $6.76
Silko is one of the greatest Native American writers to date, and "Ceremony" is her best book. It tells the story of Tayo, who was a former prisoner of war in WWII, and his quest for healing and meaning.
Fair and Tender Ladies (Ballantine Reader's Circle)Fair and Tender Ladies (Ballantine Reader's Circle) by Lee Smith
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $0.01
This epistolary novel tells the story or Ivy Rowe, born into poverty, born in the Appalachians, born with such a fiery zest for life that most places can hardly contain her. Annie Dillard said that "Fair and Tender Ladies" is "about as moving a work of literature as has ever been written," and I can't help but agree.
1984 (Signet Classics)1984 (Signet Classics) by George Orwell
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.99
After teaching this novel for three years, I reluctantly moved on to other dystopian novels such as "Brave New World" and "The Handmaid's Tale." But, "1984" is still the most terrifying dystopian novel ever written. You will feel very grateful for your freedom after reading "1984," the title of which should really be "2084" since it is set far into the future.
The Virgin SuicidesThe Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides
Buy used from: $0.01
This is a strange, tragic, darkly funny tale of five sisters and the boys who worship them. The movie, directed by Sophia Coppola, is also terrific.
Their Eyes Were Watching GodTheir Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston
Buy new: $10.87 / Used from: $4.98
When this novel was first published in 1937, it did not receive a great deal of praise. This comes of no surprise to me because this story is wonderfully modern; it sounds like something Toni Morrison might write. I love this book. ItÂ’s as simple as that. I hope I can teach it someday.
Light in August (The Corrected Text)Light in August (The Corrected Text) by William Faulkner
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.16
When people say that Faulkner is too difficult, I tell them to read "Light in August." It is still a brilliant novel, but without the nonlinear plots, shifting narratives, internal monologues, etc.
The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (P.S.)The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel (P.S.) by Barbara Kingsolver
Buy new: $10.79 / Used from: $0.20
This is Barbara Kingsolver's most ambitious work. It tells the tale of missionary Nathan Price, his wife, Orleanna, and their four daughters as they struggle to survive in, and make sense of, the Belgian Congo.
Atonement: A NovelAtonement: A Novel by Ian McEwan
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.01
Ian McEwan is a writer worth following. "Atonement" is, perhaps, his greatest novel to date. It is a story of childhood, gulit, love and forgiveness--it is absolutely riveting.
DefianceDefiance by Carole Maso
Buy used from: $0.25
This is the page-turning story of Bernadette O'Brien, a brilliant professor at Harvard and her shocking murder of two of her male students, for which she was sentenced to death. Maso's writing is so uniquely erotic, so dark, so funny and twisted and beautiful that you soon find yourself reading anything with her name on it.
Parable of the SowerParable of the Sower by Octavia E. Butler
Buy new: $10.07 / Used from: $3.36
Another dark dystopian novel. What can I say? I love me a good apocalypse. But unlike "1984," Butler's "Parable of the Sower" offers some hope in the form of a new religion created by the protagonist, Lauren Olamina. The sequal to this book, "Parable of the Talents" is also very good.
The Secret Life of BeesThe Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $0.01
Set in South Carolina in 1964, this moving story is told from Lily Owen's point of view, a young girl who must come to terms with her gulit over her mother's death.
