Barefoot Gen is my favorite manga of all time. It depicts the story of a young boy growing up in the aftermath of the Hiroshima bomb. It is extremely sad and even gruesome at times, but it also hopeful, funny, and inspiring. It doesn't get better than this. 8 volumes out of 10 have been translated.

This is an odd story by the best manga author ever. It is not a series, it is one giant book. It's about a doctor trying to cure a disease that turns people into dogmen. It's bizarre but really awesome.

Ongoing series by Tezuka the king of manga about a black market doctor who uses his incredible skills for good. Up to volume 4 right now.

This is the most popular salaryman (businessman) series in Japan. It's about a James Bond type guy who does a job successfully and sleeps with many beautiful women along the way. It follows him throughout his career and the different series have different names. These are printed as bilingual comics to help Japanese learn English.

This is a series with MANY volumes. This is a cooking manga. It takes place in a chinese restaurant in Japan. You watch the young chefs create really incredible dishes, and when the head chefs teach them something, you learn it too. The storylines are very cheesy, and it's drawn in a cartoony style... But if you like Iron Chef, or you;re interested in Chinese food, read one of these.

Naoki Urasawa is the greatest manga author currently alive. This is his best series yet. It is a science fiction story that is too hard for me to explain. It is currently being serialized in the US (I've already read the whole thing haha) and is up to volume 3 or 4.

This series by Urasawa is supposed to be incredible but I haven't read it yet.

Many people say this is one of the best manga ever. I don't agree. It's good, but it's a lot more like a european comic (moebius for instance). I found it hard to follow and a bit boring also. The art is gorgeous.
