![]() | Barefoot Gen, Vol. 1: A Cartoon Story of Hiroshima by Keiji Nakazawa
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $7.25 Barefoot Gen is my favorite manga of all time. It depicts the story of a young boy growing up in the aftermath of the Hiroshima bomb. It is extremely sad and even gruesome at times, but it also hopeful, funny, and inspiring. It doesn't get better than this. 8 volumes out of 10 have been translated.

![]() | Buddha, Volume 1: Kapilavastu by Osamu Tezuka
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $7.12 This is the illustrated life of Buddha by the greatest manga author ever, Osamu Tezuka. It is an 8 volume series. This story never gets boring or tiresome. It is incredible and may be the best ever. Many people say that his work Phoenix is better than this but it isn't.
|
![]() | Ode To Kirihito by Osamu Tezuka
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $11.39 This is an odd story by the best manga author ever. It is not a series, it is one giant book. It's about a doctor trying to cure a disease that turns people into dogmen. It's bizarre but really awesome.
|
![]() | Apollo's Song by Osamu Tezuka
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $10.99 Cool book about karma with sci-fi elements. A must-read. It is not a series, it is one giant book.

![]() | A Drifting Life by Yoshihiro Tatsumi
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $11.98 I just read this whopper of a book (800+ pages!) in one weekend and it is one of the best ever. It is not a series, it is one giant book. It is an autobiography of the author, Yoshihiro Tatsumi. It shows the early portion of his career writing and drawing manga. The reader gains tremendous insight into what the manga industry was like.
|
![]() | Kosaku Shima: Vol 1 by Kenshi Hirokane
Buy used from: $42.00 This is the most popular salaryman (businessman) series in Japan. It's about a James Bond type guy who does a job successfully and sleeps with many beautiful women along the way. It follows him throughout his career and the different series have different names. These are printed as bilingual comics to help Japanese learn English.
|
![]() | Sanctuary (Volume 1) by Sho Fumimura
Buy used from: $1.99 This is an 8 part series. Anyway, it's a political thriller about a young politician who teams with a young Yakuza (Mafia) gangster and tries to take over Japan. The story is cool and action-packed like a Jackie Chan movie. It's also pretty cheesy with gratuitous sex and violence.
|
![]() | Iron Wok Jan Volume 1 (Iron Wok Jan (Graphic Novels)) by Shinji Saijyo
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.69 This is a series with MANY volumes. This is a cooking manga. It takes place in a chinese restaurant in Japan. You watch the young chefs create really incredible dishes, and when the head chefs teach them something, you learn it too. The storylines are very cheesy, and it's drawn in a cartoony style... But if you like Iron Chef, or you;re interested in Chinese food, read one of these.
|
![]() | Parasyte 1 by Hitoshi Iwaaki
Buy new: $11.01 / Used from: $3.99 This is an incredible series. It has maybe 10 or 12 volumes, I don't remember. It is a sci-fi story about a high school kid who bonds with an alien parasyte and has to fight other parasytes. It sounds cheesy and it is, but just a little. Give this one a try.
|
![]() | Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys, Vol. 1: Friends by Naoki Urasawa
Buy new: $11.10 / Used from: $6.40 Naoki Urasawa is the greatest manga author currently alive. This is his best series yet. It is a science fiction story that is too hard for me to explain. It is currently being serialized in the US (I've already read the whole thing haha) and is up to volume 3 or 4.
|
![]() | Pluto: Urasawa x Tezuka, Vol. 1 by Naoki Urasawa
Buy new: $9.35 / Used from: $7.39 This is an incredible series by Urasawa, the current manga king. The story is based on an Astro Boy story by Tezuka. It is amazing what Urasawa does. It is a science fiction story about robots so I'm not sure if all adults will get into this but I loved it.
|
![]() | Naoki Urasawa's Monster, Vol. 1 by Naoki Urasawa
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $4.00 This series by Urasawa is supposed to be incredible but I haven't read it yet.
|
![]() | Vagabond, Vol. 1 (VIZBIG Edition) (Vagabond Vizbig Edition) by Takehiko Inoue
Buy new: $14.39 / Used from: $10.98 Ongoing samurai series by Takehiko Inoue, one of the greatest manga authors alive. It is about one of the most famous samurai ever, Musashi Miyamoto. It's a LONG interwoven story that frequently changes direction, so you need to pay attention. These big versions collect three stories in one, so they're perfect for me, because I already read the whole thing, I just want to buy it.
|
![]() | Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Vol. 1 by Hayao Miyazaki
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $5.00 Many people say this is one of the best manga ever. I don't agree. It's good, but it's a lot more like a european comic (moebius for instance). I found it hard to follow and a bit boring also. The art is gorgeous.
|
![]() | Lone Wolf and Cub Vol. 1: The Assassin's Road (Lone Wolf and Cub (Dark Horse)) by Kazuo Koike
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $2.26 this is the obvious pick so I'll end the list here. It is a marvelous and long series about a wandering kill for hire samurai who brings his toddler with him everywhere.
Everyone else has written about this so I won't try to elaborate.
