MY FAVORITE WESTERNS
By an Amazon.com customer
The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)The Magnificent Seven (Special Edition)
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $2.65
My all-time favorite western, with truly magnificent cast and Elmer Bernstein score. A must for any serious film buff.
Red RiverRed River
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $5.92
This rugged tale of a harrowing cattle drive in post-Civil War Texas has John Wayne at his best plus great performances from Montgomery Clift, Walter Brennan.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Special Edition)Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Special Edition)
Buy used from: $4.31
This light-hearted buddy film is a useful corrective to the darker, more violent westerns coming from Sam Peckinpah and Sergio Leone at roughly the same time.
High Noon (Collector's Edition)High Noon (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $15.49 / Used from: $8.46
One of the first "revisionist" westerns, classic mixture of suspense, drama, and social commentary with Gary Cooper's stoic hero and great Dmitri Tiomkin theme sung by Tex Ritter.
The Good, the Bad and the UglyThe Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.47
Mean, dark and ugly, but one of the most exhilarating films ever made with bravura action sequences and awesome Ennio Morricone score. Lee Van Cleef is a villain of almost Shakespearean complexity, while Clint is an enigmatic antihero and Eli Wallach once again chews the scenery as a Mexican bandit.
Dances with Wolves (Full Screen Theatrical Edition)Dances with Wolves (Full Screen Theatrical Edition)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.97
A beautiful if overlong film that was a much-needed corrective to Hollywood's stereotyping of Native American. Kevin Costner's last good film.
Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition)Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $5.36
This revisionist classic is an early attempt at the kind of stark realism that won Clint Eastwood an Oscar for "Unforgiven." Peckinpah's last classic before the booze took its toll.
The Wild Bunch - The Original Director's CutThe Wild Bunch - The Original Director's Cut
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $1.99
Another dark saga from "Bloody Sam" with powerful performances from William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine.
El TopoEl Topo
Buy used from: $18.00
Surrealist Mexican-made western with Zen gunfighters, lesbian cowgirls, enslaved dwarfs and pistol-packing Jesus freaks. To give you an idea of how strange it is, Marilyn Manson wants to star in the sequel.
ChisumChisum
Buy used from: $2.19
Kinder, gentler John Wayne opus about aging cattle baron seeking to prevent greedy developers from squeezing him out. The always brilliant Ben Johnson is his sidekick Pepper, and if you don't see any homoerotic subtext in their relationship you're a better man than I.
THE Undefeated / North to Alaska Double FeatureTHE Undefeated / North to Alaska Double Feature
Buy used from: $1.25
The Duke joins forces with Rock Hudson in this corny but entertaining post-Civil War drama about ex-confederate and Union officers who join forces to fight against the Emperor Maximilian's invasion of Mexico.
North to AlaskaNorth to Alaska
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.23
Raucous, bawdy Western comedy set during Alaska gold rush. Once again the Duke is our hero, outsmarting slimy Ernie Kovacs and romancing luscious Capucine.
My Name Is NobodyMy Name Is Nobody
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $10.95
Another western comedy, a hilarious self-parody from Sergio Leone about a wannabe gunslinger (Terence Hill) and an aging quick-draw artist who just wants to be left alone (Henry Fonda).
The Alamo [Region 2]The Alamo [Region 2]
The Duke's directorial debut, an occasionally preachy but nonetheless inspiring tribute to the men who died for Texas independence in 1836. Once you get used to John Wayne in a coonskin cap instead of a Stetson you'll have no trouble buying him as Davy Crockett.
King Lear / Korol LirKing Lear / Korol Lir
This rugged Russian-language version of Shakespeare's darkest tragedy is like a western with its sweeping panorama of bleak, desolate scenery and its evocation of a grubby medieval landscape populated by greedy, corrupt nobles and ignorant, starving peasants. Also, there are men on horseback and lots of fighting. An "eastern" worth looking into.
Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition)Lawrence of Arabia (Limited Edition)
Buy new: $28.49 / Used from: $5.58
Once again, not technically a western but harsh desert landscapes, men on horseback, and lots of guns. The mystique of Arab lore in nineteenth century Europe was similar to that of the American Indian.
Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $4.11
Sure, it's set in ancient Rome, but this revenge drama could have come straight from the typewriter of Sergio Leone. Russell Crowe's sullen hero owes a lot to Charles Bronson's character in "Once Upon a Time in the West."
Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)Casablanca (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $3.48
One could well imagine Rick Blaine having started out in life as a professional gunfighter in the early-twentieth century frontier, perhaps a man like Vin (Steve McQueen) in "The Magnificent Seven."
