![]() | The 36th Chamber of Shaolin
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $3.95 This is where any novice should start. Simply the best one yet. Amazing story, great training and fights. Just wonderful.
|
![]() | "The Kid with the Golden Arm"
Buy used from: $9.33 What a fun flick. The weapons and imagination goin' wild. Not much on story, but doesn't need to be. Easily my favorite "Venoms" film.
|
![]() | The Legend of Drunken Master
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $2.61 This flick will take your breath away. There are a million movies with "drunk" in the title, but the characters never really appear intoxicated. Jackie Chan will have you believing that you could take out an army with just the right mix of booze. The fights are some of THE best ever. A fictitious chapter in the life of the real Wong Fei Hung.

![]() | 7 Grand Masters
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $7.97 This movie, like "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin" is synonymous with "Old School Kung Fu". All the classic themes and cliches that you can't help but love. Animal styles, revenge, great sound-effects, dudes waving their hands around for several seconds before a fight, and of course, TONS of acrobatics. I'm considering stopping this to go watch it right now!

![]() | Shaolin Vs Lama
A wonderful movie with plenty of fights and imagination. This flick is tough. You don't wanna miss it.
|
![]() | Once Upon a Time in China #1
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.98 Another wonderful period piece about the legendary Wong Fei Hung, a doctor and kung fu master, this time played by Jet Li. This movie was hugely popular in China, spawning several sequels, most with Li. A little disappointing in its overlength and the casting of Yuen Biao as someone who really can't fight. Otherwise this movie is fantastic. Jet Li may well have been in his prime right here.
|
![]() | Five Deadly Venoms
Buy used from: $7.97 This one will take ya for quite a ride. The fight scenes suffer a little in comparison with other films of the time, but is good enough all around to make up for it. Torture, murder, intrigue, and the ultimate in kung fu styles, this is a must-see fu flick.
|
![]() | The Prodigal Son
Buy used from: $4.69 The great fight choreography you find today all started in 1982 with this one right here. Yuen Biao stars as a spoiled rich kid who thinks he's all that and finds out the hard way that he ain't. He swallows his pride and pesters an opera star into teaching him real Wing Chun. Amazing fights. Not to be missed.
|
![]() | Fist of Legend
Buy used from: $5.88 A remake of Bruce Lee's "Chinese Connection" starring Jet Li as the student of the man he would eventually play in "Fearless". Fantastic fights that are fast and powerful. Chin Siu-Hou is as exciting to watch as Jet. Weak men of East Asia? Why I think not!
|
![]() | Iron Monkey
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $1.95 A little too much on the wires for my taste but still a great flick. This is technically a prequel to "Once Upon a Time in China" that has Wong Fei Hung as a young boy (ironically played by a girl) with his father (Donnie Yen) first going after, then helping the Iron Monkey fight corruption. Quite enjoyable.
|
![]() | Once Upon a Time in China Part 2
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $1.36 Yuen Woo Ping took over fight choreography for the first sequel, sending Wong Fei Hung to a medical conference in Canton where all hell is breaking loose with the White Lotus Clan declaring war on all things foreign. Donnie Yen adds to the excitement as a jerk of a general who has two awesome fights with Jet Li involving deadly bedsheets.
|
![]() | Legendary Weapons Of China / Shaw Bros / Special Edition
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $9.99 Another in the "down with all things foreign", taking place in the turn of the century with several members of the "Spiritual" kung fu school trying to learn to deflect bullets and find a traitor who defected years before. Should not be missed.
|
![]() | Kung Fu Classic - Avenging Eagle
Buy used from: $6.00 Ti Lung and Alexander Fu Sheng star in a tale of irony and redemption in this Shaw Brothers' classic. The story will keep you as engrossed as the fights scenes. I'm not a big Fu Sheng fan, but here he has the only role I've liked him in other than "The Chinatown Kid", which would be on the list if it didn't take place in the present. Sorry.
|
![]() | The Buddhist Fist
Buy used from: $9.13 A great old-school classic by Yuen Woo Ping that has two childhood friends reuniting to solve the disappearance of one's father. Okay story and reasonably mild humor sparked by great and fluid fights that were definitely ahead of their time.
|
![]() | Jackie Chan's Project A
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $2.00 Jackie Chan stars as a naval officer up against local corruption and some deep-sea pirates. Here to help him are Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. Great fights, stunts, and a good sense of humor without going overboard, I don't know of anyone who didn't like this.
|
![]() | Invincible Pole Fighter
Buy used from: $11.20 No hand-to-hand, just pole-fighting... and plenty of it. Gordon Liu trains for revenge against the Mongols who wiped out his 4 brothers. Pretty sweet.
|
![]() | Magnificent Butcher
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $3.30 Early classic by Yuen Woo Ping, starring Sammo Hung, about Butcher Wing, student of Wong Fei Hung. Crazy styles and fun fights. This one transcended my skepticism and Scrooge-like attitude toward kung fu comedies.
|
![]() | Challenge of The Masters (Shaw Brothers)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.05 Another Wong Fei Hung flick, with the great Gordon Liu going to learn the arts from the great Chen Kuan Tai. Only a couple of fights, but for 1976, they're fantastic. Story carries this one. The true essence of Martial Arts.
|
![]() | Ip Man (First Print Edition) DVD
Excellent biopic of Wing Chun master Yip Man, who was the teacher of the great Bruce Lee. Donnie Yen turns in his most mesmerizing and complex set of moves yet, courtesy of action director Sammo Hung. A new classic.
