![]() | Kitty and the Midnight Hour (Kitty Norville, Book 1) by Carrie Vaughn
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $1.00 This series features Kitty Norville, a late-night DJ and new werewolf who gets the idea of creating "The Midnight Hour", a talk show for supernatural creatures. Kitty is a fun character to read and always has some witty comment ready. She is no leather-clad urban cowgirl, but thankfully she has some strong friends to help her when she stumbles into trouble. 6+ books.

![]() | Heart of Stone (The Negotiator Trilogy, Book 1) by C.E. Murphy
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.10 Taking a step away from the action/detective novels, this trilogy primarily focuses on the charismatic lawyer, Margrit Knight, and her relationship with Alban, a gargoyle belonging to one of the five supernatural races that remain hidden amongst the human populace. I've never seen a take on the supernatural quite as naturally unique as this, and I love Margrit's headstrong character.

![]() | The Tomb (Adversary Cycle/Repairman Jack) by F. Paul Wilson
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.00 Repairman Jack is amazing. The author does an outstanding job of taking "what if" scenarios and turning them into a supernatural phenomenon that Jack has to take care of, be it a haunted mansion (Haunted Air), a global cult (Crisscross) or ancient Indian demons (The Tomb). Jack is a true urban mercenary with an incredible character. The series is very long, but I wouldn't miss a single book.

![]() | A Rush of Wings: Book One of The Maker's Song by Adrian Phoenix
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.59 This series borders on cliche with it's female detective and vampires. However, it makes up for it with an incredible plot, strong writing, and Dante. Dante is an extremely well-developed character with goth makeup and a twisted past. This series throws in a bit of everything, from fallen angels to government conspiracies. It also has some seriously disturbed antagonists in it, so watch out.

![]() | Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $3.75 Another female protagonist working at a radio station, but the similarity to Kitty Norville ends there. This series deals with vampires instead of werewolves, and for once the vampires aren't all dark and uber-mysterious, but feel very normal. The highlight of this series for me is the relationship between Ceara and Shane, and Shane, despite being a vampire, actually has more issues than Ceara.

![]() | Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.62 Amazingly funny and charming, this story deals with a very-typical young man named Charlie who just discovered his father was Anansi, the African trickster god, and he has a rather annoying twin brother named Spider, who essentially ruins Charlie's well-organized life. Take sibling rivalry and put it on a god-like level and you have a hilarious and fun-filled book.

![]() | American Gods: A Novel by Neil Gaiman
Buy new: $10.19 / Used from: $4.08 American Gods stands out as one of Neil Gaimans best novels. Long and detailed, the supernatural world blends in easily with the real world as Shadow, an ex-convict and generally nice guy, gets recruited by Odin the Norse God (disguised as a con artist) to do various tasks. This book is long and often serious but still has quite a bit of humor in it. Warning: The sex and language can be intense.

![]() | Daemon Eyes by Camille Bacon-Smith
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Evan discovers he's the half-human son of Kevin Bradley, an all-powerful daemon from a different dimension. Has a generally dark nature and a strong focus on the characters. In fact, while the series does have a private-eye type plot, most of the book focuses on the relationship between Evan and his very-inhuman father. Meanwhile, the all-superior Kevin Bradley learns what it means to be human.

![]() | Already Dead: A Novel by Charlie Huston
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $5.86 In this book, vampirism isn't supernatural but a disease, called the Vyrus. The main character, Joe, is more a hitman than a detective, but he plays at being both. Written in unique prose that is sharp and short but often confusing. Joe is tough guy who doesnt play well at being hero. Warning: has lots of crude language and deals with mature subjects. 4-Book Series.

![]() | Staked by J. F. Lewis
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.50 This is, by far, the FUNNIEST vampire book Ive read. I laughed out loud every chapter. Eric is a vampire. And while he may be an all-powerful Vlad-level vampire, he seems to be too busy getting into trouble to rule the world. Void City is a fun place full of just about every kind of supernatural out there. I think Eric's favorite t-shirt aptly says it all: Welcome to the Void.

![]() | You Slay Me (Aisling Grey, Guardian, Book 1) by Katie MacAlister
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.84 Normally I avoid romances, but this series is just too funny to ignore. Aisling Grey finds her way into trouble without really trying. While theres lot of sex, it doesn't get in the way of the plot. Aisling's boyfriend is Drake, who (yes) fits the category of uber-dark and mysterious. Oh, and Drake's a dragon. In fact, most of the series revolves around dragons (can't really go wrong with that).

![]() | Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
Buy used from: $17.99 An alternate-history book featuring magicians and fey. This book is VERY long and can be slow, but eventually it picks up pace and takes you on a wild ride. Has (aptly) a very English feel to it. There are lots of different characters with different stories, but they all tie together beautifully toward the end. Has a lot of funny moments, too. A thousand pages long, and I still wanted more.
|
![]() | The Vampire Files by P. N. Elrod
Buy new: $10.88 / Used from: $3.35 Take a classic Al Capone 1920s gangster story and add vampires in the mix and you have the Vampire Files, featuring Jack Flemming, freelance reporter, who gets turned into a vampire while in the midst of some sleuthing. Jack can dissipate into mist and hypnotize people, which is very useful for sleuthing. Yet Jack always seems to find trouble. Gets kinda boring after the 4th book.

![]() | Monster by A. Lee Martinez
Buy new: $13.59 / Used from: $6.00 Supernatural creatures aren't monsters. They're cryptos, and they're just trying to make a living amongst the ignorant humans. For those cryptos that step out of line there's Monster, an underpaid exterminator with a demon girlfriend he can't get rid of and who turns a different color every time he sleeps. How's that for something different? Oh, and the main villain is a lady with too many cats.

![]() | His Majesty's Dragon (Temeraire, Book 1) by Naomi Novik
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01 Like most historical novels, this series may have too many slow moments to keep most people entertained. Set during the Napoleonic Wars, where in addition to fighting by land and sea, the British also fight by air. On dragons. Lawrence, a sea captain, is assigned to the dragon corps. when he accidentally picks up the rare egg of a powerful Chinese dragon, whom he names Temeraire.
|
![]() | Nightlife (Cal Leandros, Book 1) by Rob Thurman
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.93 The main characters are Cal and his older brother, Niko. Cal is part-Auphe. The Auphe are essentially demons, and they made Cal for some crazy experiment. This series takes a bite out of every supernatural element, from werewolves to trolls, and kind of throws it all together. The series can be pretty crude and gory at times, but Cal and Niko are good characters.
