Best Live Album Ever
By an Amazon.com customer
Delaney & Bonnie On Tour With Eric ClaptonDelaney & Bonnie On Tour With Eric Clapton by Delaney & Bonnie & Friends
Buy used from: $26.99
This is it, this is THE ONE. It doesn't get any more soulful and rockin' than this. An absolute freight train of a live album. And is just as smoking when it slows down to take on more coal.
The Last Waltz (Special Edition)The Last Waltz (Special Edition)
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $3.02
You must get this on video. Unlike many live shows where actually seeing the performance makes the music less enjoyable (by whittling at your imagination), this one is a visual treat. Starting out with the flat out frightening performance of "Who Do You Love" by Ronnie Hawkins. Plus Levon Helm's dry-witted narration to enhancing the relationships between The Band and the guest artists.
Revival in BelfastRevival in Belfast by Robin Mark
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $5.95
Celtic Christian at its very best, timeless uplifting melodies especially when the wind instruments come into play.
At the RymanAt the Ryman by Emmylou Harris & the Nash Ramblers
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $1.99
Emmylou democratically covers the span of country and WESTERN (yes she remembers it isn't JUST country) from Steve Earle to the Sons of the Pioneers. Very hot backing band. Try the VHS tape too
Concert in the ParkConcert in the Park by Paul Simon
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $1.88
Two CD's chock full of Graceland era songs. The ultimate "World Music" CD. Simon did a fantastic job melding South American drummers, African singers and guitarists, and American horn players into a bubbling musical stew.
Show TimeShow Time by Ry Cooder
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $43.65
Another effort by Ry to turn us all into musicollegists, Terry Evans and Bobby King on soulful vocals, sometimes taking the lead, Flaco Jimenez on tex-mex accordian, and so on. Turn it up loud and enjoy!!
Mad Dogs & EnglishmenMad Dogs & Englishmen by Joe Cocker
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $15.00
The dream show of the age!! Guest artists abound and take their turn in the spotlight--- Leon Russell, Rita Coolidge, Claudia Lennear, Don Preston. Full and robust band. As stated elsewhere, a veritable rock and roll circus.
El Rayo-X Live!!El Rayo-X Live!! by El Rayo-X
Buy used from: $14.11
Aha, at last, there are some copies out there of this great live work of raw R&R. The reggae-fied multiple lead vocals "Papa Was a Rolling Stone" is a show stopper.
Ginger Baker's Air ForceGinger Baker's Air Force by Ginger Baker's Air Force
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $32.98
What, an album with a "2" or "3" rating and so many flaws being here in the "Best of All Time" section. Oh yes. This was, essentially, Blind Faith (sans Clapton) before they were Blind Faith, fleshed out with great sidemen and is a treasure warts and all.
Live at MontereyLive at Monterey by Johnny Otis
Buy used from: $18.00
As with many of my choices, this is another example of a core band augmented by various talented guest singers, the most notable being Ivory joe Hunter ("Since I Met You Baby," a staple of 60's radio) and Esther Phillips. Johnny's guitar phenom som Shuggie also rounds out the bunch. Robust band including a great horn section. Hard to find, get it when and while you can.
Ice Caps: Peaks of TellurideIce Caps: Peaks of Telluride by Sam Bush
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $9.95
As cleanly recorded and inspiringly performed as the alpine cover suggests. In his typical progressive bluegrass style, Sam covers John Hiatt, Lowell George and others. Worth price of admission for "Same Old River" all by itself.
Welcome to the CanteenWelcome to the Canteen by Traffic
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $20.26
To me, easily the best live Traffic album. Includes contributions by Dave Mason who wandered in and out of the group, and a cracker jack version of "Gimme Some Lovin." In other words, early Traffic era stuff and even "pre-Traffic" before the vocal diversity gave way to instrumental jams. Not that there aren't some good long jams here, but they "rock" better than most.
Stop Making Sense: Special New Edition (1984 Film)Stop Making Sense: Special New Edition (1984 Film)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.69
It definitely helps to have the video, so you can actually see David Byrne in the tent-sized sport coat, but the music by itself is quite a treat
The Ike & Tina Turner Revue LiveThe Ike & Tina Turner Revue Live by Ike & Tina Turner
Buy new: $24.97 / Used from: $55.60
Despite the less-than-stellar period recording and a lot of "testifyin'" at the beginning, this is a killer set, not only because of the early career sparks from Ms. Tina but also because of the excellent contributions of the other vocalists involved here. Minor quibble: all the guests perform right in a row, spread throughout would have been better.
June 1, 1974June 1, 1974 by Kevin Ayers
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.99
Concert featuring the creme de la creme of alternative/eccentric artists of the day: Kevin Ayers, Nico and John Cale of Velvet Underground, Brian Eno of Roxy Music, the underappreciated Ollie Halsall of Timebox and Patto, and many others. It would be hard to imagine assembling a better cast of artists of this genre.
Sudanese PopSudanese Pop by Abdel Aziz el Mubarak
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $10.00
One catch, I'm not sure this is a LIVE album, but you won't know the difference. You MUST get this. Originally released on the "Accordians That Shook the World" label (seriously). Abdel Aziz looks and performs like a Morrocan Jackie Wilson in a turban, gold lame jacket and all. Can't understand one word he's singing but no need to!! One look at the picture of the band and you have the idea.
Live In DublinLive In Dublin
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.64
Songs for the new depression? How timely. If so, a nice uplift. Rip-roaring ride with robust instrumentation. The original studio release was mighty fine, but this easily tops that
Five Live YardbirdsFive Live Yardbirds by The Yardbirds
Buy new: $21.98 / Used from: $10.49
Part of this was originally available in the US as one side of the LP "Having a Rave Up with the Yardbirds," it is now available in numerous forms. To my knowledge, this one has the most live sections among the available CD's out there.
Surfers' Pajama PartySurfers' Pajama Party by Bruce Johnston
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $3.14
Ahhh...the epitome of the "Animal house" tradition of party music, let it loose, get down, professionally amateurish (not amateurishly professional). Check it out.
Thirty Seconds Over WinterlandThirty Seconds Over Winterland by Jefferson Airplane
Buy used from: $6.08
There are other releases of their live material from this period which contain more material, but this one is better produced. Papa John Creach's fiddle often functions as the lead instrument for the band, in place of the lead guitar. (NOTE: IF THIS IS UNAVAILABLE, GET "LAST FLIGHT")
Miles of AislesMiles of Aisles by Joni Mitchell
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.55
Recorded appropriately when she was far enough along in her career to deliver a nice presentation of her standards, abetted by a jazz-oriented ensemble to make sure we knew how unique her approach had become.
Complete Vebb au Complet 1973-1975Complete Vebb au Complet 1973-1975 by Emard Ville
Buy new: $36.99
Fine complete reissue of Ville Emard Blues Band's two live LP's. Some songs in French, some in English, beuatiful female vocals, huge group aggregated from various Candian blues-rock bands
Tina Live in EuropeTina Live in Europe by Tina Turner
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.74
"What, two Tina Turner albums on your list? You must be a diehard fan." Not really, though I know I should be. This music just stands up that well in the sea of "live" choices available to us. The "Revue" albums display her early fire, this album shows she still "had it" in the latter years. But we know that!!
Live GrapeLive Grape by Moby Grape
Buy used from: $22.00
See my review. fine shuffling blues tunes from the "Left Coast" fit for the "Right Coast" as well.
Stompin' Room Only (Unreleased Live Recording)Stompin' Room Only (Unreleased Live Recording) by The Marshall Tucker Band
Buy new: $12.97 / Used from: $8.48
Southern rock masterpiece, great live sound, "24 Hours at a Time" is a song screaming to be sung live
Live: If That Ain't Country..Live: If That Ain't Country.. by David Allan Coe
Buy used from: $8.98
I never thought of myself as that much of a David Allan Coe fan...til I heard this. Great
Roxy Music - The High RoadRoxy Music - The High Road
Buy used from: $7.90
This is the DVD of the full length performance originally issued as a shortened EP with this same cover. Roxy Music at their best with many of their signature songs. There is sometimes a CD of this material available as well but I am unable to locate it at this writing.
MTV Unplugged: In ConcertMTV Unplugged: In Concert by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.97
Oh sure, there are other albums out there by the Boss with more recognizable hits, but this one avoids the items you've heard til you drop, and hits the spot.
En ConcertEn Concert by Orchestre National de Barbes
Buy used from: $14.58
Hot percussion laden show from North African band
Live in EuropeLive in Europe by Otis Redding
Buy used from: $2.40
Sadly the VHS tape of Otis live on the UK TV show "Ready Steady Go" seems to be in hibernation, so this is as close as we can come. If you can grab the VHS though, you will have the added enjoyment of Otis non-stop sweaty steaming performance accompanied by British ladies in fringe and go go boots trying (unsuccessfully) to keep up.
Live!Live! by Fela Ransome-Kuti and the Africa '70
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $55.58
No truly great live album list could exclude some entry from Fela *** Kuti whose middle name changes often. The challenge is what to include, and here is another case where a good video of his work is irreplacable. Sadly I do not know what video to suggest. For a purely audio suggestion, I recommend this one with the great Ginger Baker, who helped Fela achieve a broader audience.
The Wall: Live in Berlin, 1990The Wall: Live in Berlin, 1990 by Roger Waters
Buy new: $29.98 / Used from: $1.38
Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and others provide what (I think) Pink Floyd material often needs, which is more distinctive vocals.
Rattle and HumRattle and Hum by U2
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $1.44
How could one not include such an inspired rendering of this group's output? Even if the video was sometimes panned for pretentiousness (as I comment above, sometimes we're better off without the visuals), the music stands, and adding BB King as a guest for "Love Comes To Town" didn't hurt either.
Live at the Whisky a Go-GoLive at the Whisky a Go-Go by X
Buy used from: $5.99
Exene, John Doe et al give us a long set of their best material "plus."
