Ride the LightningRide the Lightning by Metallica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.99
This is my all-time favorite Metal album by Metal greats Metallica. 'Ride the Lightning' is such a legendary that it is hard to define. Released in 1983, every track is great and remains great, but my favorite could be 'For Whom the Bell Tolls'. If you like this then check out '...And Justice for All' by the same band, or else material by Megadeth.
The FragileThe Fragile by Nine Inch Nails
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $4.27
The epic 2 disc set 'The Fragile' is the magnum opus of Nine Inch Nails. Although 'The Downward Spiral' was a great predecessor, and some remix albums from these years were really something, none of them match 'The Fragile'. Lyrically and musically profound, sometimes the music borders on metal, sometimes on electronica.
Dark Side Of The MoonDark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.99
'Dark Side of the Moon' is Pink Floyd's perennial classic. It has sold millions and remains popular today. It is psychedlic influenced, spacy music that is arranged and timed to perfection. Although I was tempted to put 'Meddle' on here instead I chose this mega-album. A must-hear for any fan of rock music from the 60's and 70's.
Houses of the HolyHouses of the Holy by Led Zeppelin
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $5.25
I decided that 'Houses of the Holy' is my favorite Led Zeppelin album. Although 'untitled' also known as 'IV' is a bit more popular, and their first album 'I' perhaps more original, I thought 'Houses of the Holy' stands as the best final product today, along with 'Physical Graffiti'. The first three songs sound great along with 'No Quarter'.
Revolver (Remastered)Revolver (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.15
No list of the greatest Rock'n'Roll music would be complete without The Beatles. I basically think that most of the Beatles music is very good, but that they reached their peak in 1966-1967. That means 'Revolver' and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' are their greatest acheivements.
Blonde on BlondeBlonde on Blonde by Bob Dylan
Buy new: $15.93 / Used from: $9.60
This is my favorite Bob Dylan album, a man who has released many greats. Of course 'Highway 61 Revisited' is his other massive classic. Other albums I would recommend include 'Bringing it all Back Home', 'Blood on the Tracks', and perhaps the very musically simplistic 'The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan'. His lyrics are very profound and have incredible depth.
Master of PuppetsMaster of Puppets by Metallica
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.50
This is my second-favorite album from Metallica. This band in my opinion towered above their peers. Every song is excellent and epic. The sound is incredible, and the songwriting is top-level. I have always thought that everything by Metallica was great (except maybe 'Re-Load'), but this is among their best. 'Master of Puppets' is the band's most critically acclaimed album.
LateralusLateralus by Tool
Buy used from: $7.00
'Lateralus' is my favorite Tool album. It may not be quite as popular as 'Aenima' but in my opinion it is far better. The tracks are timed perfectly, with amazing interplay between the drummer and guitarists. The lyrics can also be fairly profound, but if anything are the band's weak point. This music is great metal that borders on progressive.
In the Court of the Crimson KingIn the Court of the Crimson King by King Crimson
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $34.96
I decided to include 'In the Court of the Crimson King', not because it is necessaily my absolute favorite prog-rock album, but it is the most influential and important. The one that started progressive rock music in the first place back in 1969. Robert Fripp is the band's leader and demonstrates fascinating guitar playing ability on this album. 'Red' could arguably be even better.
NevermindNevermind by Nirvana
Buy new: $40.98 / Used from: $35.19
This is not a personal favorite, but I still love to listen to it. This album is laden with memories for me. I included it mostly because it's popularity and influence cannot be denied. Definitely the best Nirvana album anyway. In my opinion, it somehow just caught on. I still do enjoy listening to it though, as the songs are all well written and performed.
Déjà VuDéjà Vu by Crosby Stills Nash & Young
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $7.51
The inclusion of this album, might be controversial in some quarters. I decided to include it because I really love it, and it sold upwards of 7 million copies. All the musicians on it are fantastic, and I have even had the pleasure of seeing Crosby Stills and Nash play. 'Crosby Still & Nash', the bands debut album, is almost equally as good.
OK ComputerOK Computer by Radiohead
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.78
This is the best Radiohead album. In my opinion anyways, and in terms of critical acclaim and I am pretty sure in sales. There are many things to love about this album, but the main draw is the songwriting and the sound. Both are wonderful. My favorite song on this album is 'Paranoid Android' but there are many others.
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Remastered)Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (Remastered) by The Beatles
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $9.99
'Sgt. Pepper' is the pinnacle of psychedelic rock. It, however, might be a tad overrated. After all it was Rolling Stones number 1 album of all time on a recent list of greatest albums, and tops many other lists as well. I still think 'Revolver' is better, and 'Abbey Road' is more accomplished, but Sgt. Pepper is the most original.
TommyTommy by The Who
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.75
To me, Tommy represents everything The Who were about. Making epic "rock operas" full of great songs that are pretty confusing at times. But the music is what makes it great. 'Who's Next', and 'The Who Sell Out' could be better. The album is about a boy/man name Tommy who is born deaf/dumb/blind and later becomes a spiritual icon.
Electric LadylandElectric Ladyland by The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $6.71
This grand product is my favorite Jimi Hendrix album. It has sprawling songs and compositions that are dramatic and intense. Hendrix was obviously a legend and for good reason. I really found that this album, his last release, is notably better than his previous two albums as the guitarist got much more accomplished with age.
