Guide to Dickens

David Copperfield (Modern Library Classics)David Copperfield (Modern Library Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.95 / Used from: $1.99
This is my pick as Dickens's best. He seems to have put a lot of enthusiasm into the book. The story is somewhat biographical and reflects Dickens's own life. It has a good story, excellent characters, and a nice overall balance. It is almost twice as long as Great Expectations.
Bleak House (Modern Library Classics)Bleak House (Modern Library Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.54 / Used from: $0.66
Written in 1852, this is one of his best novels with many "Dickens" characters and sub-plots. It is about the legal system - and is partially biographical since Dickens was trained in a legal office. Bleak House and David Copperfield are considered to be masterpieces of literature and are highly entertaining. They were written by Dickens in his prime.
Great Expectations (Penguin Classics)Great Expectations (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $1.06
This is similar in some ways to David Copperfield but shorter and not as complex. It is about a young lad, Pip, who comes from a poor background in the marshy countryside, but has "great expectations" to become a gentlemen in London. This is an entertaining and a fast read, but the story is a bit dis-jointed. Dickens wrote two different endings: one happy, one negative. It is a fast light read.
A Tale of Two Cities (Penguin Classics)A Tale of Two Cities (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.00 / Used from: $0.08
This is a popular and a more conventional novel that is set around 10 years before the French Revolution. It is about a man on trial in London who is acquitted, marries, goes to France, is in jail, and tries to escape. There is a lot of drama plus time shifting, and action between London and Paris. Many think that this is one of Dicken's best. I enjoyed the read.
Oliver Twist (Penguin Classics)Oliver Twist (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $7.00 / Used from: $0.32
This is one of Dickens's best known books, his second novel, written in 1837, and one that made him famous. He writes about one of his favorite themes: child abuse. The book is a classic and contains a variety of memorable characters. The London setting is an attraction. This book has a map, 100 pages of analysis and comments, and illustrations.
Nicholas Nickleby (Penguin Classics)Nicholas Nickleby (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $0.54
This is novel number three which follows Oliver twist, and was published in 1838. It is very funny as is the Pickwick Papers. The protagonist is a hot temperted but fun guy, Nicholas, about 20 years old, and his younger sister Kate. The style is similar to Oliver Twist, but longer - almost 800 pages - and more complicated, and less dark: great read, very funny, worth the time!
A Christmas CarolA Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $3.99 / Used from: $1.58
From 1843, this might be Dickens most famous novel, read to many young children and seen as a play or movie. As most know, this is the story of Scrooge and his redemption and it involves the famous character Tiny Tim. This is a classic
Hard Times (Enriched Classics)Hard Times (Enriched Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $4.95 / Used from: $0.01
This is more of a conventional novel, written in 1854, and it describes life in an English industrial town. I liked the book but some do not. Dickens wants the characters to make the choice themselves such that they can improve their lives. I enjoyed the read.
Little Dorrit (Penguin Classics)Little Dorrit (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $6.23
Written later in his career in 1855, this (again) is about the legal system, and in particular it is a novel involving the debtor's prison. This is considered good but not his best novel.
Dombey and Son (Modern Library Classics)Dombey and Son (Modern Library Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $0.58
This is about a man Dombey who runs a shipping company, and his sonwho dies at a young age. It is the story of that event and what transpires afterwards. One of the themes is arranged marriages.
The Old Curiosity Shop (Penguin Classics)The Old Curiosity Shop (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $9.23 / Used from: $2.99
It is about Nell, the grand-daughter of the owner of the shop. It sprang from the failed Humphrey's Clock series. I was disappointed with the read. Dark like Twist but with few bright spots.
Barnaby Rudge (Penguin Classics)Barnaby Rudge (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.57 / Used from: $4.28
This is another early novel from 1841, and it is historical in nature. The story is based on the "no-popery" or Gordon riots of 1780. Lord George Gordon is treated with some sympathy in the novel, which concludes with a description of the riots. This is not one of his popular novels.
Our Mutual Friend (Modern Library Classics)Our Mutual Friend (Modern Library Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.54 / Used from: $2.64
Written in 1864, this is a less well known and less popular novel about a young man who inherits money. It is the novel that was attacked by the writer Henry James as an example of bad writing by Dickens. But many like the book and it has many characters.
The Pickwick Papers (Penguin Classics)The Pickwick Papers (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.57 / Used from: $1.47
This is the first novel and it is a satire on coutry life, or gentry in the country. It made him famous. It follows the success of Sketches by Boz, from 1836. He changes next to the dark tale of Oliver Twist, and the rest is history.
Martin Chuzzlewit (Penguin Classics)Martin Chuzzlewit (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $9.23 / Used from: $3.83
This was from 1843, and it is again about money and about the Chuzzlewit family, and how the family members are in conflict over money. This novel is not as popular as some of his others. In its day, this book was poorly received to the point that it almost drove Dickens into bankruptcy.
The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Penguin Classics)The Mystery of Edwin Drood (Penguin Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $8.64 / Used from: $4.85
This is Dickens's last novel and it was never finished. He writes about the disappearance of a person in a cathedral town in England. This is the worst book by Dickens. It is a very slow and tedious read and it was never finished. It took me three evenings to get through the 230 pages. Very slow!

The Life of Our Lord: Written for His Children During the Years 1846 to 1849The Life of Our Lord: Written for His Children During the Years 1846 to 1849 by Charles Dickens
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $4.39
Charles Dickens wrote The Life of Our Lord around the same time he was finishing up David Copperfield, but to readers raised on a diet of Dickensian wit and indignation, his rendering of Jesus' life may come as something of a surprise.
Master Humphrey's Clock and Other Stories (Everyman Paperback Classics)Master Humphrey's Clock and Other Stories (Everyman Paperback Classics) by Charles Dickens
Buy used from: $1.25
A short story never made into a book. I read it and was not too excited about the stories. This was Dickens only real writing failure. He had to abandon the series due to readership rejection after six serial publications.
