The Syrian BrideThe Syrian Bride
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $5.86
This is a story from a divided Druze community. The bride lives in Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, while the groom lives in Syria. It’s not so much about the Israeli-Syrian conflict (although one cannot escape it in the film) as it is about traditions of the Druze society and the role of women in the Middle Eastern cultures. It’s a great story, in Arabic, Hebrew and a little bit of English.

KATYN - 2 discs Set [NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Poland]KATYN - 2 discs Set [NON-USA FORMAT, PAL, Reg.0 Import - Poland]
A must-see film. Although quite heart-breaking, it's one of those "conveniently ignored" facts of WWII. The Soviets started WWII along with the Germans by attacking Poland from the east, executing around 20,000 Polish army officers in cold blood. The story has been suppressed by the Allies who didn’t want to ruffle feathers with their Soviet allies. Mostly in Polish with some German and Russian.
Scenes From a Marriage - Criterion CollectionScenes From a Marriage - Criterion Collection
Buy new: $38.99 / Used from: $24.99
This is a typical Ingmar Bergman film with dialogues exploring personalities, motives and character. It’s a pretty strong condemnation of the superficial lifestyle so prevalent in the West. Documentary about the wall being built by Israel to separate the West Bank from the rest of Israel. Interesting story of a German U-Boat and its crew during one of its missions in the Atlantic during WWII. A mix of characters with different political views and interests share a tight space of a submarine. This is a classic spaghetti Western with clever dialogues as well as with some very good social criticism of Western/consumer society. The good guy, Joe lines up against the bad guys, the Badman brothers in the defense of the common good. But as it often goes in our Western world, the common good is where the money is, in which case we don’t mind tolerating the bad guys. Brilliant! All in Czech.
