The City of Dreaming BooksThe City of Dreaming Books by Walter Moers
Buy new: $11.53 / Used from: $8.90
So descriptive, you can easily lose yourself in the smells, tastes, sights and dangers of the city. At once completely different and satirically similar to the cities of our own, you'll encounter characters so widely diverse that you never know what to expect!
The Phantom of the OperaThe Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux
Buy new: $21.56 / Used from: $12.99
Gaston Leroux has such a cunning wit; there is humor, mystery, melancholy and passion on every page. The film is an adaptation from Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical that had already taken numerous liberty with the original plot. There is still no screen version that really captures the full story of the book.
The Wicker Man (Two-Disc Special Edition)The Wicker Man (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy used from: $44.79
Affronted by religious beliefs and culture quite different from his own, Sgt Howie is surrounded by what he considers obscene and immoral. But does that mean the unfamiliar is wrong? Haunting music and powerful images make this a memorable, provoking movie.
PhantasmPhantasm
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $3.35
Supernatural, though not in the way a poltergeist is. There's still gore and reality here; not so much ephemeral ghosts. Youth, Death, Love and the afterlife all explored. Sort of a surrealist's horror tale.
Forbidden ZoneForbidden Zone
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $6.00
A musical in B&W [recently released in color!] by Richard and Danny Elfman of The Mystic Knights of Oingo Boingo. Wonderful animation sequences that further remove you from reality into The Forbidden Zone!!!!!!
The Dark Crystal (25th Anniversary Edition)The Dark Crystal (25th Anniversary Edition)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $5.93
Dark Crystal is completely puppets with no human actors making an appearance. It is similar to Lord of the Rings in it's epic journey/prophecy storytelling where the small must perform big task with help of friends for larger good- only he's healing a crystal in order to banish evil, not banishing a ring of evil.
Date With an AngelDate With an Angel
Buy used from: $19.75
It has a beauty and timelessness in the character's actions and relationships that are believable and unlike numerous cheesy romantic comedies made today. Of course a movie of this kind of plot is going to be predictable, but that doesn't mean it's portrayals of the ideas aren't freshly entertaining.
Logan's RunLogan's Run
Buy used from: $3.41
Post disaster world where civilation lives under a dome, unaware of the sun, of wind. They have every luxury, but no one may live over 30yrs. Logan, a policeman of sorts, is forced to run in hopes to find the "Sanctuary" outside the dome, where people can live beyond 30. Also see Soylent Green for conspiracy/postwar/overpopulation/futuristic themes.
The Story of OThe Story of O
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $12.75
A personal look at the mentality behind bdsm. The movie is a literal depiction of what happens in the book's central ideas with the same erotic essence and lasting impression. A different and more optimistic ending than the book.
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (New Line Platinum Series)Hedwig and the Angry Inch (New Line Platinum Series)
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $10.49
Very bittersweet and honest, with great music/lyrics and animation sequences. I feel the themes explore being true to yourself, loving openly, and supporting each other during the journey of making who you are.
The Lives of OthersThe Lives of Others
Buy new: $14.94 / Used from: $2.74
Here's another movie about life before the wall came down [quite different from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, haha! Still very sexually oriented though.] The oppressive East Berlin government's corruption, blacklisting, suicides, and forced love affairs are tightly knit in this intricate plot. You never know what the characters are going to do, which makes a stunning and beautiful ending.
One Million Years B.C.One Million Years B.C.
Buy new: $9.49 / Used from: $4.25
Hot cave people, dinosaur fights, grunting, Raquel Welch, literal fur bikinis. Perhaps an acquired or specific taste, for what it is it's the best in it's genre of cave people movies.
