One Hundred Years of SolitudeOne Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $9.98
One of the best things ever written and my personal favorite book. The images linger long after the final word has been printed and you just want to start again and live with these people once more.
Gravity's RainbowGravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon
Buy used from: $6.45
It's not that Thomas Pynchon sets out to be dense, he just wants to give you all the bang for your buck that he can. It's truly brilliant, one of the greatest American novels, and probably one of the weirdest endings in the history of literature.
House of LeavesHouse of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $8.99
Daunting and fascinating, the book is the labyrinth and it's filled with a Pynchonian amount of references, histories, and stories. Don't ignore the appendicies!
Slaughterhouse-Five: A NovelSlaughterhouse-Five: A Novel by Kurt Vonnegut
Buy new: $10.20 / Used from: $4.88
Such a sad, bitter tale, where hope is the furthest away from anything in the world. I'd, however, like to be unstuck in time sometime.
Don QuixoteDon Quixote by Miguel De Cervantes
Buy new: $11.55 / Used from: $4.59
Great, thick book, hilarious at every turn, then sad and heartwrenching. The birth of the modern novel iddnit? Edith Grossman provides a very very accessible translation.
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3)Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Book 3) by J.K. Rowling
Buy new: $14.61 / Used from: $0.41
Not gonna lie, I do like Harry Potter and I still think this is the best of the bunch. Focused on characters rather than action we finally get to know the gang. The movie version still stands as the best adaptation yet.
Collected FictionsCollected Fictions by Jorge Luis Borges
Buy new: $14.28 / Used from: $9.75
You gotta be in the mood for Borges but when you are, these do pay off. Personally, I like having everything he's written in one book (ficcion wise), though it's strange that 50 years of work can just be put into 500 pages.
UlyssesUlysses by James Joyce
Buy new: $12.21 / Used from: $3.98
Okay, it's difficult, probably one of the most difficult books ever, but Joyce's masterpiece has everything from humor to death and it is enjoyable, even if not everything is caught up on the first go around.
White Noise (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century)White Noise (Penguin Great Books of the 20th Century) by Don DeLillo
Buy new: $10.40 / Used from: $3.44
Cold, distant, but equally fascinating. Really, when I read it, I had no idea where it was going to take me. Having finished it, I'm still not even sure.
Something Wicked This Way ComesSomething Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $0.01
Strange, dark, disturbing Bradbury but regardless it is captivating.
A Wrinkle in TimeA Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Buy used from: $0.01
Probably my favorite book as a kid and the one book I've read the most. Amazing adventure and the three Mrs. W's are brilliant.
The Phantom TollboothThe Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $0.01
Imagine if Thomas Pynchon wrote a kids' book...it might come to be something like this. Clever wordplay and genius puns.
Macbeth (No Fear Shakespeare)Macbeth (No Fear Shakespeare) by William Shakespeare
Buy new: $5.95 / Used from: $0.50
My favorite Shakespeare play, easy to read but full of all sorts of meaning. I don't know, I always read it as a psyco-thriller, not a violent epic like Polanksi.
Lord of the Flies (Perigee)Lord of the Flies (Perigee) by William Golding
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $0.01
See? Little kids can't create perfect socities either.
The Maltese FalconThe Maltese Falcon by Dashiell Hammett
Buy new: $9.20 / Used from: $0.01
Dashiell Hammett reinvents the detective story and pretty much writes one of the best mysteries ever. People are still trying to imitate him.
Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings (Today Show Book Club #25)Fluke: Or, I Know Why the Winged Whale Sings (Today Show Book Club #25) by Christopher Moore
Buy new: $10.04 / Used from: $1.00
Somewhere towards the middle it changes from a Garciamarquezian magic realism piece to this massive conspiracy involving whales ruling the world. Still, a hilarious trip along the way.
Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes: Part One: Millennium Approaches Part Two: PerestroikaAngels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes: Part One: Millennium Approaches Part Two: Perestroika by Tony Kushner
Buy new: $11.18 / Used from: $4.05
You'd think this would just be a depressing piece of emotional pornography, but it's not and it's funny, touching, crazy, uproarious, and endless creative simulatanously.
