![]() | Watermelon Man
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $8.99 A white racist bigot wakes up one day to discover (God?) has turned him black. The original comedy classic about someone translated into another person's skin is, of course, Shakespeare's "Midsummer's Night Dream." Try the Max Reinhardt version. A really offbeat French movie on the switch theme is titled "Rendez-moi ma peau.

![]() | Horn Blows at Midnight [VHS]
Buy used from: $12.95 Heaven's "front office"is disappointed with Earth and decides to bring on THE final destruction. The trouble is they choose a goofy horn player from the angel staff to do the job. When so many take the Book of Revelation all too literally, it's refreshing to see a filmmaker willing to poke fun at the whole thing.
![]() | Topaze [VHS]
Buy used from: $5.88 An honest, unemployed chemistry teacher is duped into sponsoring a sparkling elixir that is supposed to be healthy but really is not. When he finds out the truth, he has a few surprises of his own. Today John Barrymore's talent is somewhat overlooked but his pre-code comedies are priceless. He is equally wonderful in "Twentieth Century" as well as "Counsellor-at-Law.
![]() | Maccheroni (Macaroni) [VHS]
Buy used from: $21.66 An American returns to the Italian village he helped liberate 40 years ago. Alas, the Italian girl he left behind has been told amazing stories about him, all invented by her brother. A heart-warming version of the "Europeanization" of an American. Jack Lemmon participated in other fabulous comedies including "The Odd Couple, Irma La Douce, The Fortune Cookie, and The Out-of-Towners.
![]() | Little Big Man
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.61 Comic (and tragic), the hero spins a fantastic tale, a revisionist history of the Old West. It astonished audiences with its sensitive treatment of Native Americans. I've never been a big fan of the Western, but excellent films in that genre are: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Viva Zapata, Hud, Yellow Sky, The Misfits, The Naked Spur, Hombre, Pursued, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
![]() | Me & The Colonel [VHS]
Buy used from: $35.00 Possessing opposite personalities, a Jew and a Pole both have to flee Nazi occupied France...only together do they have a chance. Danny Kaye is wonderfully sweet in this film.

![]() | Guys and Dolls

![]() | Bedazzled (1967) [VHS]
Buy used from: $1.86 Hilarious satire about a man who sells his soul to the devil. Great fun...not to be confused with the remake which lacks the intelligent script of the original classic.
![]() | Adam's Rib

He wants to prosecute a lady who fired gunshots at her two-timing husband; She wants to defend the case as a shining illustration of womens' liberation. The papers love the story because Tracy and Hepburn are married...to each other! And don't miss Kate's saucy performance in "Stage Door.
![]() | Johnny Stecchino [VHS]
Buy used from: $15.99 A thoroughly enjoyable tale of a hapless bus-driver who is seduced by a beautiful woman to come to Sicily. Alas, he is unawares that her agenda is to have him "knocked off" since he's a look-alike of her gangster husband. One of the funniest films ever made. Other films that don't take gangsters too seriously are "Some Like it Hot" (USA), "Black Cat White Cat" (Bulgaria) or "La Chevre (France)
![]() | Play It Again Sam [VHS]
Buy used from: $2.40 I cannot think of a funnier film on the perils of dating...as valid a classic as Woody Allen's recognized masterpieces: "Annie Hall" or "Hannah and her Sisters." Other Jewish flavored comedies are "Frisco Kid, Next Stop Greenwich Village, Goodbye Columbus, Crossing Delancey, The Goodbye Girl, Manhattan Murder Mystery, In the Spirit, Don't Drink The Water, and anything with the Marx Brothers.

Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $12.97 One of those films that sticks in your mind over the years. This is a scathing satire of newsrooms and their slide from providing important public news to infotainment...all for high ratings. You won't want to miss Faye Dunaway's phenomenal performance.
![]() | The Producers (Deluxe Edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.74 Zero Mostel shines in this wild story of a theatre producer who dreams up an illegal scheme to oversell business investments in a show which he is certain will be pulled after opening night. |

For offbeat romantic comedy, look no further than "Only Human, Flirting, Butterflies are Free, The World of Henry Orient, and Rocky Horror Picture Show.
![]() | The Solid Gold Cadillac
Buy used from: $54.99 An owner of just a few shares of corporate stock ends up exposing the corruption of the big bosses by speaking up at a board meeting. Films like this about the pursuit of the American Dream provide terrific opportunities for comedy and irony: "How To Succeed in Business Without Really Trying", "It's a Gift", "As Young As You Feel", "Quiz Show", and my personal favorite "The Devil and Miss Jones.
![]() | Angel-A
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $9.55 Wow...Paris! I could not take my eyes off the screen with these amazing night scenes, shot in black and white, of the City of Lights. (Think of Brassai - friend of Picasso - and his fine art photography of the 1930's). As for the story...a small time, petty criminal saves a woman who jumps off a bridge into the Seine only to discover that she is his guardian angel.
![]() | Blame It on Fidel
Buy new: $24.49 / Used from: $9.74 How does politics appear - left or right - from the perspective of a nine year old? This is the premise of this satire but it most certainly works... on account of the charming, intelligent performance of the child actress Nina Kervel-Bay.

![]() | Dead Like Me - The Complete First Season
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $8.69 Brilliant and funny. Random people are selected as "grim reapers" to extract the souls of those passing on to the other side. Through humor, this mini-series succeeds in touching upon some very serious existential questions. Follow up with Season Two. Die hard fans may be disappointed with the final movie length episode - "Dead Like Me: Life After Death - but it gives some closure to the series.
![]() | Amelie
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.31 This is "the film" that put Audrey Tautou on the map...one of those movies that has to be experienced rather than described.
