The Velveteen RabbitThe Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
Buy new: $9.95 / Used from: $5.05
One of my earliest childhood reading memories, this book really is a classic tale that brings to life the magic that children see in their toys! Strangely the book has a message of ‘awakening’ and ‘presence’ too, that I missed at the time but that, perhaps, was a seed planted for me. The memory of it strikes a note of melancholy in my heart for those days of boundless imagination and innocence.
Where the Wild Things areWhere the Wild Things are by Maurice Sendak
Buy used from: $8.06
Can I say ‘classic’ again?! There it is, said! A delightful story about a boy called Max who works through a moment of anger by confronting the monsters of his imagination, the ‘Wild Things’! The outstanding pictures, the fantastic ‘Wild Things’, paint a story far richer than might be expected with so few words in the book! Another great reading memory of mine!
The World of Pooh: The Complete Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner (Pooh Original Edition)The World of Pooh: The Complete Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner (Pooh Original Edition) by A. A. Milne
Buy new: $17.15 / Used from: $1.28
Another 'classic' that really warms the heart! Still, to this day a pleasure to read! No words needed to describe this gem!
The Wind in the WillowsThe Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame
Buy new: $13.57 / Used from: $11.99
Another classic! This great book is full of wonderful, larger than life characters and is a tale of mischief, adventure, and camaraderie. I think it struck a note with me as a child because we lived close to the River Thames and would spend most weekends there, "simply messing about in boats" just like the characters.
Swallows and Amazons (Godine Storyteller)Swallows and Amazons (Godine Storyteller) by Arthur Ransome
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $0.99
This first book (in a series of 12) is set in and around a lake in the English Lake District and tells the stories of a group of children who spend their days sailing, camping, exploring, engaging in occasional acts of ‘piracy’ and generally having fantastic Adventures! These wonderful stories were an inspiration for our own Adventures on the River Thames and I read them over and over.
Danny, the Champion of the WorldDanny, the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl
Buy used from: $6.32
A story that some say promotes mischief in the form of poaching pheasants. No stranger to mischief as a child, I loved it! The main character, Danny, is imaginative, intelligent and brave. Children will love him!
The BorrowersThe Borrowers by Mary Norton
Buy used from: $19.99
Another tale guaranteed to tantalize a child’s imagination! They will never look at the nooks and crannies around the house in the same way again! Primarily a record of the interactions of the tiny ‘Borrowers’ (little people) and the "human beans" (the big people . . . us!) who the Borrowers see as the primary cause of trouble. Them and the cat of course! Great fun!
Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-6)Harry Potter Paperback Box Set (Books 1-6) by J.K. Rowling
Buy used from: $44.55
The ‘Harry Potter’ series by the marvelously gifted J. K. Rowling, destined to be . . . wait for it . . . classic children’s books! Yet so much more! Richly textured and a marvelous read for adults too! I didn’t read them as a child but impossible to leave out of a list of great children’s books!
The Hobbit: 70th Anniversary EditionThe Hobbit: 70th Anniversary Edition by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy new: $15.75 / Used from: $13.99
The word ‘classic’ is probably overused (definitely in my list!) when describing children’s books. The Hobbit surely fits that category with no dispute. I read it so many times as a child and again more recently. Generations have been delighted, enthralled, entertained, moved and inspired by the themes of courage, loyalty and selflessness brought to life through the characters introduced here!
The Lord of the RingsThe Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
Buy used from: $24.96
This trilogy is an Epic Adventure set in a world so rich and complete that it is hard to fathom the complexity of it at times! A joy for any age. I am not sure it could be called a children’s book but equally no list of children’s books is complete without it. Definitely my favourite books growing up and possibly still today!
Ted's Simple TruthTed's Simple Truth by Mike Brown
Buy used from: $10.00
May I also introduce ‘Ted’s Simple Truth’ by Mike Brown (that’s me)? The story concerns Ted, an ordinary boy, who is dissatisfied with life but doesn’t know why. An important question sends Ted off on an amazing adventure that reconnects him with nature and helps him rediscover the simple joy of living. Hopefully one day it will appear on other peoples lists of favourite books!
Adventures at Walnut Grove (Mom's Choice Awards Recipient)Adventures at Walnut Grove (Mom's Choice Awards Recipient) by Dana Lehman
Buy new: $15.95 / Used from: $39.32
A charming picture book that tells a simple story with a valuable life lesson – treat others as you would like to be treated! A new find for me, it is bound to be a favourite with my nieces! The books message is carried in the story naturally so children will see how the things you do and say come back to you, sometimes sooner than you expect! Delightful illustrations and a great message!
