By an Amazon.com customer
Cy Twombly: Cycles and SeasonsCy Twombly: Cycles and Seasons by Nicholas Serota
Buy new: $34.65 / Used from: $33.98
Catalogue for Twombly's recent retrospective. Great value for the package. Fantastic reproduction, several gatefolds. Really the only general overview of Twombly's work currently in print.
Marlene Dumas: Measuring Your Own GraveMarlene Dumas: Measuring Your Own Grave by Cornelia Butler
Buy new: $34.65 / Used from: $37.50
Make sure to see this show (if you can) when it hits MoMA in December. There won't be another full on Dumas retrospective in the US for some time, so this is your change to see her paintings in person. This books is really well priced and again the printing is top notch.
Unknown HalsmanUnknown Halsman
Buy new: $39.47 / Used from: $33.21
More photography than art, but still worth checking out. Halsman is best known as one of the most important portrait photographers of the 20th century, but this book shows a different side. The book design is highly original, and is kind of like a monograph artist book hybrid. Gorgeous printing, clothbinding, printed floral endpapers....stunning!
Michael Borremans: Whistling a Happy TuneMichael Borremans: Whistling a Happy Tune by Michael Borremans
Buy new: $50.62 / Used from: $46.98
Only comprehensive book currently in print on Borremans. This one looks solely at his magical drawings.
Peter DoigPeter Doig
Buy new: $32.97 / Used from: $31.98
Excellent overview of Doig's photo based paintings. This is the catalogue for the recent Tate retrospective, that is currently up in Frankfurt. If you are trying to choose between Phaidon's book or this one, choose this one. Better value for money.
Vincent Desiderio: Paintings 1975-2005Vincent Desiderio: Paintings 1975-2005 by Vincent Desiderio
Buy used from: $219.94
If you don't know Desiderio's work look him up. He has to be considered one of the best and most complex representational painter working today. Smart design, great repros. Unfortunately this monograph is current unavailable from the publisher.
Sophie Calle: Double GameSophie Calle: Double Game by Sophie Calle
Buy new: $26.37 / Used from: $12.99
Classic, now shrunken. The first printing goes for $300+, so get it while you can.
Otherworld UprisingOtherworld Uprising
Buy new: $19.00 / Used from: $2.68
Interesting artist whose work will appeal to some fans of Marcel Dzama and Amy Cutler.
Live Forever: Elizabeth PeytonLive Forever: Elizabeth Peyton by Laura Hoptman
Buy used from: $101.08
Catalogue for the recent New Museum exhibition. Sports an innovative board binding, paper changes, and great repros. When a book makes you like a certain artist more you know the publisher has done their job well.
The Art of Richard TuttleThe Art of Richard Tuttle by Madeleine Grynsztejn
Buy new: $43.87 / Used from: $23.90
A knock out. Tuttle worked closely on the design of this book and captures the spirit of his work. Great repros.
Gerhard Richter: Forty Years Of PaintingGerhard Richter: Forty Years Of Painting by Robert Storr
Buy new: $53.55 / Used from: $46.81
Excellent overview. Now several years old, but if you are new to Richter's work, this is still the place to start. Features a probing Robert Storr essay, great reproductions.
Shirin Neshat: The Last Word (Spanish Edition)Shirin Neshat: The Last Word (Spanish Edition) by Hamid Dabashi
Buy new: $54.75 / Used from: $28.85
A Knockout monograph on one of the most interesting video/film artists working today. Includes famous works like Rapture, as well as all of her recent output.
Jenny SavilleJenny Saville by Gagosian Gallery
Buy new: $31.50 / Used from: $20.89
I'm a huge fant of Saville's work and look at this book often...but still somewhat dissapointing. Certainly worth the price and a must have if you are into her work. Reproduces nearly every major painting as well as her source material. Still the only comprehensive book on her work.
Zak Smith: Pictures Of GirlsZak Smith: Pictures Of Girls by Zak Smith
Buy new: $21.10 / Used from: $18.07
Interesting and sexy work marrying the stylizations of Schiele with the spirit of graffiti artists. Now in its second printing. There are other books out there, but this is the most straight forward monograph.
Gerhard Richter Catalogue Raisonne 1993-2004Gerhard Richter Catalogue Raisonne 1993-2004 by Gerhard Richter
Buy new: $59.04 / Used from: $43.85
Makes a nice bookend in tandem with 40 Years of Painting. Lots of gatefolds and fantastic printing. Updates the catalogue raisonne from 93-04.
Elizabeth PeytonElizabeth Peyton by Elizabeth Peyton
Buy used from: $48.25
I'm not a big fan of her work, but Rizzoli did a great job putting this book together. Although this book great, you may want to pick up the New Museum/Phaidon's recent catalogue since it includes her most recent paintings.
Martin BarreMartin Barre by Yve-Alain Bois
Buy new: $34.20 / Used from: $29.97
Interesting abstract painter, who is not very well known in the US but worth checking out. If you like Richard Tuttle, Robert Ryman or Raoul De Keyser you may like his work. Only english language monograph available on him.
Painting People: Figure Painting TodayPainting People: Figure Painting Today
Buy new: $19.77 / Used from: $21.94
Not a monograph, but a great overview on contemporary painting. Now in paperback for less than $20 on Amazon.
Gerhard Richter: AtlasGerhard Richter: Atlas by Gerhard Richter
Buy new: $37.80 / Used from: $40.00
Keeps changing forms, keeps being essential for any bookshelf.
Lucian FreudLucian Freud by William Feaver
Buy new: $85.05 / Used from: $78.25
Really the best book currently in print on Freud, unfortunately the reproductions are not as good as some previous books. Impressive for its girth, but not close to being my favorite all time book on Freud.
Gary PanterGary Panter by Robert Storr
Buy new: $64.12 / Used from: $61.70
THE book on Panter. Nothing else comes close.
Eric Fischl: 1970-2007Eric Fischl: 1970-2007 by Arthur C. Danto
Buy new: $53.55 / Used from: $49.98
Glad to see Monacelli brought this back in its new expanded form. Excellent overview, though the reproductions are not quite as good as the first printing. Feels a tad bit overpriced, but if you are looking for a book on him you need to get it.
Jasper Johns: Gray (Art Institute of Chicago)Jasper Johns: Gray (Art Institute of Chicago) by Douglas W. Druick
Buy new: $43.87 / Used from: $30.95
Stunning exhibition catalogue. You won't see better reproductions of Johns work in any other book. Tons of details, excellent scholarship. A winner!
Michaël Borremans: The PerformanceMichaël Borremans: The Performance by Michaël Borremans
Buy used from: $245.00
Just getting noticed on this side of the Atlantic; mysterious figurative paintings. Each one is like a quiet poem that recalls Morandi, Hammershoi, and Neo Rauch. Unfortunately this book is now out of print.
William ChristenberryWilliam Christenberry by Andy Grundberg
Buy used from: $24.95
Fantastic monograph on this important photo-artist. Best printing of any previous books on Christenberry. 70% previously unseen.
