The Classical SaxophoneThe Classical Saxophone
Buy used from: $18.95
Disc 1 was originally released as 'A Saxophone in Paris'. Concertos by Ibert and Glazunov. Caplet Legende. Two Sonatines by Koechlin. Beautiful playing. Easy to recommend.
The Elisa Hall CollectionThe Elisa Hall Collection
Works written for Elisa Hall by Debussy, Schmitt, Caplet, d'Indy, Loeffler and Longy. Beautiful playing. An exceptional disc.
Under the Sign of the SunUnder the Sign of the Sun
Buy used from: $35.00
Quality disc from Delangle. Tomasi Concerto, Maurice Tableaux de provence, Milhaud Scaramouche, Schmitt Legende, Ibert Concertino, and an ill-advised Ravel transcription. Highly recommended.
Nobuya Sugawa plays Honda, Yoshimatsu, Ibert, LarsonNobuya Sugawa plays Honda, Yoshimatsu, Ibert, Larson
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $12.96
New works by Honda and Sugawa's longtime accomplice, Yoshimatsu. Plus a so-so Ibert and a quality Larsson. Recommended, especially for the Yoshimatsu and Larsson.
French Saxophone: 20th Century Music for Saxophone and OrchestraFrench Saxophone: 20th Century Music for Saxophone and Orchestra
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $43.34
A very good disc. Caplet Legende, Debussy Rapsodie, Constant Musique de Concert, Tomasi Concerto, Absil Fantaisie-Caprice. Recommended.
An American Concerto Tribute To Sigurd RaschèrAn American Concerto Tribute To Sigurd Raschèr
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $40.16
An excellent program of works written for Sigurd Rascher. Highly recommended.
Saxophone ConcertosSaxophone Concertos
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $6.78
The first saxophone concerto CD. The Villa-Lobos and Dubois are the highlights for me. Worth owning.
Jacques IbertJacques Ibert
Buy used from: $8.41
Original versions of Ibert, Martin and Larsson. Impressive technique and musicianship. Kelly's 'distinctive' tone won't appeal to everyone.
Saxophone ConcertiSaxophone Concerti
Buy new: $20.98 / Used from: $9.99
Meager program and Savijoki's tone won't be for everyone, but his musicianship is good. The Larsson is a 'brave' recording. Have earplugs ready for the altissimo shrieking. Probably my favorite recording of the Glazunov.
Extravaganza for Saxophone and OrchestraExtravaganza for Saxophone and Orchestra
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $15.58
Old faithful Glazunov, a 'new' concerto by David Ott, and some transcriptions, including the Richard Strauss Oboe Concerto on soprano. Gorgeous playing from Richtmeyer. Highly recommended.

The Tomasi Ballade is the highlight here. Quite a good disc overall.
The Classical Saxophone - A French Love StoryThe Classical Saxophone - A French Love Story by Javier Oviedo
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $13.75
Hard to describe this one other than old-fashioned-sounding. Not bad, though. Some new works.

Not a bad disc. Doesn't challenge the best, but isn't awful.
Ballades for Saxophone and OrchestraBallades for Saxophone and Orchestra

Good performance of the Martin. OK Tomasi. The rest of the album comprises corny transcriptions. If you like that kind of thing, then you'll like this. The Martin is the highlight for me.
Impressions for Saxophone & OrchestraImpressions for Saxophone & Orchestra

The foundations of Western civilization, ouzo, feta cheese, languid isles shimmering with whitewashed buildings...and saxophone music. That's what Greece has given us. Thanks for all the former. The latter...well...
Gould: Diversions/Ward: Concerto/Peck: Upward StreamGould: Diversions/Ward: Concerto/Peck: Upward Stream
Buy used from: $78.80
Works by Peck, Ward and Gould for tenor and orchestra. No longer available (except for $75!) but the Ward and Peck are available on separate releases from Albany.
The Romanian Saxophone: Works by Stefan Niculescu (Concertante Symphony No. 3 "Cantos") / Myriam Marbe (Concerto for Daniel Kientzy & Saxophones) / Anatol Vieru (Narration II) - Daniel Kientzy, SaxophoneThe Romanian Saxophone: Works by Stefan Niculescu (Concertante Symphony No. 3 "Cantos") / Myriam Marbe (Concerto for Daniel Kientzy & Saxophones) / Anatol Vieru (Narration II) - Daniel Kientzy, Saxophone
Who thought there were so many works for saxophone by Romanian composers!? Who thought anyone would record them!? Well, Daniel Kientzy did. He growls, screams, shrieks his way admirably through them. Recommended only for more adventurous listeners.

The usual suspects here: Ibert, Villa-Lobos, Glazunov, Dubois; plus a Rachmaninov transcription. Minus the Rachmaninov, it's the same program as Rousseau's (above) disc. Several other recordings are preferable to this.

A double CD bonanza of new works mostly in a Romance-like vein. The Concerto by Alan Hovhaness is featured along with other works of varying quality. An interesting disc, though.
Encore D&T: Saxophone ConcertoEncore D&T: Saxophone Concerto by Marriner Neville
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $3.20
A very disappointing disc: poor recorded sound; an uninspired (great) orchestra/conductor; questionable musicianship from Harle. The new works (by Dave Heath and Richard Rodney Bennett) don't bring much to the table either.
Sax DriveSax Drive
Buy used from: $3.44
Concertos by Stanley Myers, Richard Rodney Bennett and Michael Torke. One of John Harle's more interesting releases.
Anders Koppel: Works for Saxophone and OrchestraAnders Koppel: Works for Saxophone and Orchestra
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $3.92
A slightly different disc to the others on this list. This one is devoted entirely to works by Danish composer, Anders Koppel, performed by his son, Benjamin. Koppel's music is highly jazz-influenced and includes extended passages of improvisation. A good disc, but perhaps not everyone's cup of tea.

Famous jazz saxophonist and brother of the trumpeter/polemicist, Wynton, Branford Marsalis has been taken to release a couple of classical(ish) discs. This one has proven quite popular. A selection of easy-listening transcriptions played on soprano.

Branford's second classical release features some more (well-played) transcriptions alongside some standards of the classical repertoire: Ibert and Milhaud. These last are less successful.
Classic Branford MarsalisClassic Branford Marsalis
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $13.79
Selection of tracks from the previous 2 discs. If you own those, this one is superfluous.

Sohre Rahbari teamed up with her conductor brother for this release, originally on Marco Polo. The result is very disappointing. One to avoid.

An interesting program...but Detlef Bensmann is one of the least inspiring players out there.

At the time of writing this, this CD is available second-hand for $160! You'd have to be insane or a masochist to pay THAT for THIS CD!
