The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)The Quiet Man (Collector's Edition)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.98
Marriage is a stormy, windy, bumpy and passionate endeavor and this film perfectly captures that with good humor. The kinship of the cast and crew create something amazing. Too many memorable, genius scenes to list, all the way to the ending scene with those whispered words. Just perfect.
A Man for All Seasons (Special Edition)A Man for All Seasons (Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $7.05
They do not make them like this anymore. Intelligent and virtuous. Every choice in the production of this movie was the right one.
The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series)The Sixth Sense (Collector's Edition Series)
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.94
It is a cinematic treat to watch this movie a second time. Remarkable how well it stands up. As a parent, I now identify so much more with the mother's dilemma. Bravo to Toni Collette, though every performance is noteworthy for what it adds. It is a shame that each of the directors film's imdb scores gets lower and lower. His storyboarding here is remarkable. Here's hoping for a comeback.
Whale RiderWhale Rider
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.10
There are so many things that are perfectly done in this heartrending and spirit-soaring movie. Wonderful lensing, wonderful acting, wonderful depiction of a culture.
Rebel Without a Cause (Single Disc Edition)Rebel Without a Cause (Single Disc Edition)
Buy used from: $4.00
This movie has entered the pantheon of great films not just because it still seems new and innovative, not just because it has a half-dozen fantastic quotes, not just because it presents parent/adolescent relationships in such a realistic way, but because it makes you remember exactly what it was like to be a teen, searching for a clan, searching for a cause.
Stagecoach (Two-Disc Special Edition)Stagecoach (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $4.77
This movie holds up really well, both as a character study and as an action film. Yet another reason to join the Yakima Canutt fan club.
A Mighty WindA Mighty Wind
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $0.97
It is hard to rank these individually; they are a triology-they must be viewed together to appreciate their full brilliance. After much thought, I declare this one the best, because it really builds to a rallying conclusion, capturing your heart in the process. Eugene Levy's finest hour.
Waiting for GuffmanWaiting for Guffman
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.99
But this one is the funniest. Corky St. Clair is one of the most brilliant creations of all time. Hilarious lampooning of local theater. The bonus features on these DVDs are excellent.
Best in ShowBest in Show
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $5.99
To say Best in Show is the weakest of the bunch would be a terrible insult. It too earns an honor, for the funniest single lines. This is the movie that made me laugh out loud the most, especially Michael Hitchcock (who I think is the most underrated of Guest's troupe) and Parker Posey's Starbucks-rendezvousing catalog people. And "snow peas."
The GeneralThe General
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $1.99
1926. Amazing. Every kid should get to view this to discover how comedy originated.
About a Boy (Widescreen Edition)About a Boy (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $8.49 / Used from: $1.00
You need at least 3. The way this movie genuinely unfolds and redeems and rebuilds its characters is a joyful, natural sight to see, accompanied by great performances from the entire cast and excellent music from Badly Drawn Boy.
Rachel Getting MarriedRachel Getting Married
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.31
Redemption is a gritty process. It is baffling why the supporting performances of Debra Winger and Rosemarie DeWitt went mostly unrecognized. Stunning work. I wish the family had been more of an every-family, more identifiable, not so rich and musically idiosyncratic.
The Great EscapeThe Great Escape
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $0.94
I was thankful that this movie still held up on its second viewing years later. Still a mandatory guy movie. However, it is still LONG, and the second time around you begin to notice all the little things that could have been cut. But then the fun of the escape would have been over sooner...
The Karate Kid (Special Edition)The Karate Kid (Special Edition)
Buy new: $11.49 / Used from: $1.99
It is so rewarding when an 80s movie actually holds up to how you felt about it as a kid. The fatherly mentor relationship with Mr. Miyagi is surprisingly profound and "You're the Best" is quite possibly one of the best songs ever used in a movie.
A Knight's Tale (Special Edition)A Knight's Tale (Special Edition)
Buy new: $5.49 / Used from: $0.46
Anachronisms galore! Watching this and Karate Kid together is an interesting pairing of 80s and 90s music underdog movies. This movie has so much character, it is easy to overlook the weaker points. And the scene where he follows his footsteps home...very good.
Joyeux Noel (Widescreen)Joyeux Noel (Widescreen)
Buy new: $12.49 / Used from: $5.11
The beginning is eyelid-droopingly slow, and I didn't think the couple made a heroic decision, but the rest of the movie is a beautiful testament to the brotherhood of man. However, in a world that embraces the madness of battle, you will often be persecuted for choosing peace.
Bonnie and ClydeBonnie and Clyde
Buy new: $5.79 / Used from: $3.48
"We rob banks." Now THIS I can understand why it is consider a classic. And totally revolutionary for 1967. Not a big fan of romanticizing immorality, but interesting character studies, bold acting choices and daring direction.
DoubtDoubt
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $3.81
Talk about a smart script. The movie made me want to see the play, because all the best moments were dialogue and all the weakest moments were attempts to be "cinematic." A few lines aside (Meryl Streep throwing her Rosary to the floor) it was very respectful and should be esteemed for creating discussion.
Field of Dreams (Widescreen Two-Disc Anniversary Edition)Field of Dreams (Widescreen Two-Disc Anniversary Edition)
Buy used from: $5.64
Watching as an adult, I am surprised by how scenes that used to be so powerful now just feel manipulative (the PTA meeting) or unnatural (the first appearance of Shoeless Joe). So no, this movie isn't heaven, but that line "Hey Dad, do you want to have a catch?" still gets your heart.
BlindnessBlindness
Buy new: $20.49 / Used from: $1.10
I don't think this movie deserved the critical drubbing it received. Granted, it aspires to be a lot more artistic than most thrillers and has more than one disturbing rape scene. Still, it is a new kind of survival story, and a thought-provoking work on our failure to see our neighbor. And the conclusion has some moments of profound human beauty.
The Village (Widescreen Vista Series)The Village (Widescreen Vista Series)
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.91
Though much-maligned, I feel this movie has a lot to offer, from its ingenius mid-river switch to the haunting score, not to mention a thought-provoking premise. Yes, there are a few directorial choices that don't resonate well, but I think Shyamalan hadn't quite lost it yet with this one.
ChangelingChangeling
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $2.09
A nightmare recounted. Rivetting history, but with some noteworthy flaws. Basically, what he says: http://werichanel.wordpress.com/universal-pictures/the-changeling-a-true-story/
Dumbo (Big Top Edition)Dumbo (Big Top Edition)
Buy used from: $14.49
This movie is sort of strange when you compare it to your childhood memories. For starters, it is just about 5 minutes over ONE HOUR. And how much of that do you think is spent with Dumbo flying? The last 5 minutes. Throw in some weird racial caricatures and you have a Disney film that has not aged well.
North By NorthwestNorth By Northwest
Buy used from: $8.26
For a movie 50 years old, it does hold up better as a thriller than any of the old James Bond movies I've seen. The Mount Rushmore scene is awesome. But the pacing is so slow, I feel this movie is only able to be enjoyed in a historical light. Cary Grant is totally miscast. I don't enjoy skeevy old men (who are "irrestible" to every woman they pass) action films.
FireproofFireproof
Buy new: $9.00 / Used from: $7.18
On the one hand, you have a staggeringly poorly-produced movie. Lit brighter than a sitcom, a wooden cross at a summer camp, a man sucking a lollipop at a wedding, ethnic stereotypes capable of only one consonant: mmmm... On the other hand, you have a movie that actually tries to heal marriages and very powerfully points out the harm pornography inflicts. That side wins out.
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Single-Disc Edition)The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.68
Throughout the movie, there is a certain sense of magic, hard to define but still enjoyable. The more I think about it though, I am able to come up with a name for that magic. It's called: Forest Gump. Same writer, less memorable, more shallow leads, different disability and different floating object. Kind of takes the enjoyment out of it.
Eagle EyeEagle Eye
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $1.99
The middle hour was fun, in a cheap thriller sort of way, but the beginning and end were attacked by cliches. (The slow slide down the wall upon receiving bad news, the lead characters magically become a couple) That robot's plot was sick. I would have loved to be in the room when anyone involved with this saw Get Smart back in June. "Oh #$%%@!"
Thelma & LouiseThelma & Louise
Buy new: $10.49 / Used from: $2.66
It has its memorable moments, but is very amoral and empty. It works though in its depiction of two women that all their life have been mistreated finally veer over the edge of reason, seeking their own rules on their own terms. It made me think about all injustices against females, and the wounds that women silently carry with them.
The Thin Man (Keepcase)The Thin Man (Keepcase)
Buy new: $17.49 / Used from: $3.09
Surprisingly risque. There is some enjoyable banter, but the revelation and conclusion are very abrupt.
Hotel for Dogs (Widescreen Edition)Hotel for Dogs (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $2.99
This was not my choice. But it wasn't the painful experience I was expecting it to be. I'll even say it: I kind of liked it, even though there's a Stupid Grown-Up to Smart Grown-Up ratio of 100:1. And did anybody else get a Barack and Michelle Obama salvific vibe off Don Cheadle and his movie wife?
Happy-Go-LuckyHappy-Go-Lucky
Buy new: $22.49 / Used from: $1.74
Kind of an odd duck of a movie, but still interesting to see what happens when two people on opposite ends of the spectrum collide.
Reign Over Me (Widescreen Edition)Reign Over Me (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $1.25
Do all movies have this many montages? It seemed as if the writer would throw one in any time he was unable to convey a complicated emotion (like, oh say...friendship). The story had so many strange details, I could only accept it if it was based on a true story. It wasn't. Still, some very heartfelt performances-kudos to the actors for reaching deeper than the convoluted script tends to allow.
Burn After ReadingBurn After Reading
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $1.98
The Coen bros. populate their comedies with the kind of quirky characters that remind us of real, annoying people-exactly the kind of people that never get represented in other movies. That's the nicest thing I can say about Burn After Reading- so many baffling script choices.
Quantum of SolaceQuantum of Solace
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $2.14
In every way that Casino Royale thrilled me, Quantum of Solace let me down. There was one cool scene in the entire convoluted mess (the scaffolding fight). And juxtaposition with random cuts to horse races or operas only works if it adds to the scene, rather than making it even more mirky.
Funny FarmFunny Farm
Buy new: $5.99 / Used from: $2.49
So sad that this is George Roy Hill's last film. Way to go out on a low note. This movie has an entertaining idea at its 3/4 mark, but everything else about it is contrived, especially their sudden decision to divorce and their "heartwarming" choice to stay in the community. They fell in love with the sham?
