Getting Acquainted with Joy Division
By an Amazon.com customer
The Best of Joy DivisionThe Best of Joy Division by Joy Division
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.48
This CD is a good place to start because it is cheap and it contains a number of good tracks to help a person get acquainted with the band. If you simply want to download some tracks, I would recommend "Digital," "Disorder" "Atmosphere," "She's Lost Control," (the extended 12" version, extra verse at the end) "Love Will Tear Us Apart," "Heart and Soul," and "Isolation."
Unknown PleasuresUnknown Pleasures by Joy Division
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $5.98
Every track of "UP" is masterful, and the entire work constitues a mesmerizing whole, with the manic "Disorder" and the melancholy "I Remember Nothing" acting as bookends on this subterranean exploration of the psyche. I also strongly encourage readers to look up the lyrics for the album.
SubstanceSubstance by Joy Division
Buy used from: $2.74
I might have put this first on my list, as opposed to "The Best of Joy Division," had it not had the "Discontinued" tag underneath it. My advice: buy this from an alternate seller, quickly! This CD brings together all of the band's singles, tracing their career from their post-Warsaw days to their near final days.
CloserCloser by Joy Division
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $14.99
This album begins with "Atrocity Exhibition," perhaps Joy Division's most violent song, both sonically and lyrically. By contrast, "Closer" ends with two atmospheric dirges, "The Eternal" and "Decades," that may well be the ultimate expressions of Ian Curtis's grief. Once again, lyrics are essential. Final note: if you buy only one of the remastered discs, buy this one; the sound is truly clearer.
StillStill by Joy Division
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $13.19
This album, published months before New Order's first album, contains powerful, essential tracks such as "Exercise One" and "Something Must Break" as well as the last concert Joy Division performed at Birmingham University, 050280. If you wind up becoming a Joy Division fanatic, you may want to invest in a vinyl copy of this for the live track "Twenty Four Hours."
The Complete BBC RecordingsThe Complete BBC Recordings by Joy Division
Buy used from: $32.50
These live-in-the-studio recordings for BBC perfectly represent the dark, raw immediacy of Joy Division's music as audiences heard it. I placed it before the live discs because the sound quality is excellent. This version contins both Peel Sessions, 2 songs from "Something Else," and an interview with Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris.
Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979 by Joy Division
Buy used from: $38.38
In the studio, thanks largely to Martin Hannett, Joy Division were eerie, with an "empty" sound, frequently full of effects, that became their signature. Live, however, they were simply ferocious. Thankfully, with the collector's editions, we now have three more of their concerts, but this CD has been a favorite of fans for years. Surely it will come back into print.
Preston 28 February 1980Preston 28 February 1980 by Joy Division
Buy used from: $3.90
"I think everything's falling apart!" Ian Curtis grumbles at one point in this performance, and it's not so much a statement on his life--though it could have been--but on the fact that the band was having a terrible time getting the equipment to work correctly. To me, however, this ultimately works in the band's favor because they get angry and you can hear it in how they play.
Leigh Rock Festival 1979Leigh Rock Festival 1979 by Joy Division & Guests
Buy new: $26.97 / Used from: $7.28
This CD opens with a raw, aggressive set by Joy Divsion from Aug 27, 1979, not available elsewhere except in partial form on the already out of print "Further Transmissions." Sound quality: tracks 1-8: fair-good bootleg. Tracks 9-10: poor-fair bootleg. Track 11: just intro. If you don't care about the other bands, download the JD mp3s. Great earlier show!
WarsawWarsaw by Warsaw (Joy Division)
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $8.98
For me, the highlight of this release is the Warsaw demo from the summer of 1977. Very aggressive stuff, especially "You're No Good for Me," the track left off of the "Heart and Soul" box set! The first 11 tracks, the band's first attempt at an album, are fascinating history--the band hated the sound-- and track 12, "As You Said," is an electronic experiment from later Joy Division days.
Heart and SoulHeart and Soul by Joy Division
Buy new: $40.47 / Used from: $30.75
As a fan who has all of the aforementioned items on this list, I would have preferred that this box set include only rarities. But the tracks "Ceremony" and "In a Lonely Place" with Ian singing are absolute treasures, as are the live tracks and the booklet which provides the lyrics to all of Joy Division's songs (though omits the Warsaw demo's lyrics--you can find these on the Internet).
Let The Movie BeginLet The Movie Begin by Joy Division
Buy new: $19.98 / Used from: $9.82
This disc is a little spotty, but it does features some great, and rare, live versions of tracks--I particularly recommend the violent versions Of "Colony," "Autosuggestion," and "Dead Souls," that end the CD. The interviews, on the other hand, leave much to be desired--just snippets, and most are difficult to decipher, being recorded in pubs with much background noise.
Short Circuit Live: at the Electric CircusShort Circuit Live: at the Electric Circus by Various Artists
Buy used from: $35.00
If you have developed a love for the history of this band, you will not want to miss this compilation, despite their being only one track from Warsaw/Joy Division, "At a Later Date." It is the band's first appearance on record, and they are featured among their contemporaries, including The Fall and the Buzzcocks.
Refractured Box OneRefractured Box One by Joy Division
Buy used from: $140.00
Overall, fans tended to feel that this box set was a ripoff at the original $60.00 or so, so I don't recommend spending an absurd amount of money on it. The only reason I list it here is that it contains an official release of one of the most bootlegged Joy Division shows ever: 11th Jan 1980, Paradiso, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. It is an amazing show.
Touching from a Distance: Ian Curtis and Joy DivisionTouching from a Distance: Ian Curtis and Joy Division by Deborah Curtis
Buy new: $11.56 / Used from: $13.67
This is Deborah Curtis's take on Ian Curtis, and her relationship with him, from Ian's adolescent days. The book is fascinating and disturbing, as it portrays Ian as quite verbally abusive and controlling in his personal life. It also includes most of Ian's lyrics, as well as a 3 page section of Unfinished Writings, a 13 page section of Unseen Lyrics, and a full Gig List. Essential!
Joy Division: Piece by PieceJoy Division: Piece by Piece by Paul Morley
Buy new: $14.96 / Used from: $7.04
This is a collection of writings by Paul Morley who may rightly be considered the primary journalist for Joy Division, as he was writing enthusiastically, and critically, about the band from the Warsaw days. I encourage fans to read the reviews of other fans, as I am looking forward to reading this one myself.
Torn Apart: The Life of Ian CurtisTorn Apart: The Life of Ian Curtis by Mick Middles
Buy used from: $18.55
From what I can tell from reviews, this book may be a necessary companion, and even possibly a counterpoint, to Deborah Curtis's "Touching from a Distance," as Deborah Curtis is not represented here. This is another book that I am greatly looking forward to reading for myself.
Joy Division-"Here Are The Young Men/Substance"Double DVD RareJoy Division-"Here Are The Young Men/Substance"Double DVD Rare
Buy used from: $22.50
I cannot recommend any DVD on Joy Division more highly than this, simply because both of these discs are nothing but footage of Joy Division playing, either live or in the occasional video. Each DVD is very professionally done, with a menu that allows viewers to select each song individually, and the discs come in a handsome case. Essential!
Joy Division (The Miriam Collection)Joy Division (The Miriam Collection)
Buy new: $20.99 / Used from: $7.84
This DVD does a great job of telling the story of Joy Division from a documentary standpoint through interviews with all of the surviving members of Joy Division and various other surviving characters surrounding the band. Also includes plenty of brief excerpts from live shows. Recommended!
Control (The Miriam Collection)Control (The Miriam Collection)
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $4.85
This is an extremely enjoyable movie that is based on Deborah Curtis's "Touching from a Distance." I just wish that the movie would have accurately represented the band's first recorded performance, having the band play "At a Later Date" with Ian opening by yelling "Does anyone remember Rudolf Hess?" This would have shown the true punk roots of the band.
MovementMovement by New Order
Buy new: $35.99 / Used from: $12.50
Note: get the American version: cheaper! New Order's transition to Joy Division, all on two discs, with some later tracks on disc 2. Standouts: "Ceremony/In a Lonely Place" (actually Joy Division songs), "Procession"/"Everything's Gone Green," and most of the "Movement" album. If you want to sample one track from "Movement," I would try "Truth."
24 Hour Party People24 Hour Party People
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $3.00
I would advise renting this to see if you like it. Personally, I found the "light hearted" approach to Joy Division--who are focused on in the first segment of the movie--to clash with the subject matter. Furthermore, the portrayal of Ian Curtis by Sean Harris is a one dimensional parody. Not my favorite.
