![]() | District 9 (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $16.99 D9 is the my pick of 2009 summer action spectacle that does not skim on basic storytelling and human emotions. Sharlto Copley, who played the protagonist Wikus, deserves an academy award. His portrayal of one who is slowly turning from a kind of a dork to an alien/monster is sheer revelation. The actions and CGI works are topnotch. Can one expect anything less from Peter Jackson?!? 11/10

![]() | Watchmen: The Director's Cut (Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $24.99 / Used from: $13.45 Snyder's sexed up Watchmen is the most exhilarating graphic novel adaptation since Sin City. The film breathes new life to Moore's characters: Dr. Manhattan's alienation, Ozymandias' world conquering/saving ambition, Rorchach's defiance, the Comedian's nihilism, and Silk Specter and Night Owl's love as humanity's redemption. The climax is both thought provoking and emotionally devastating. 10/10

![]() | Terminator Salvation (Widescreen Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $12.99 It saddens me that others are so protective of T1/T2 that they write off T3/TS. T3 brings the story upto the moment of Judgment Day. TS takes it beyond. This is no longer about sending robots to the past to protect John Connor. John is now a grown man who fights for humanity's salvation. People look up to him as a leader because of it. TS has a deep human story and stunning action pieces. 10/10

![]() | Knowing
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $3.00 Knowing in short is a sci-fi religious parable that is both intelligent and thrilling. I found myself thinking of it long in days after viewing, which is not something that I can say of the directors' cult favorite Dark City (as brilliant as it is). 9/10
|
![]() | Taken (Single-Disc Extended Edition)
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $3.52 Liam Neeson is known to us as the voice of Aslan, Jedi Master to Obi-Wan, Batman's dark teacher, & tortured Darkman. He is really let loose on this one as a father rampaging in Paris in order to save his kidnapped daughter. The subject matter touches the raw nerve of any parent's deep seated fear of losing her child. The last half of an hour runs like one of the best episodes in TV's 24. 9/10
|
![]() | Crank 2: High Voltage
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $2.99 Crank2 tops the original in every way. The actions are so ridiculously over the top that they rival those in the best of 80s horror comedies (i.e Evil Dead, Dead Alive & etc.) Like those cult classics, Crank2 will surely go down as a B movie/cult favorite. 9/10
|
![]() | Star Trek (Single-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $11.59 I must admit that I am no trekkie. However, this is one hell of a fast fun ride with the right mixture of actions and humors. Popcorn sci-fi blockbuster does not get better than this. 9/10
|
![]() | G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (Two-Disc Edition)
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $13.49 Again, I am not a fan of the old G I Joe TV show. The movie however beats out Transformers 2 as my 2009 brain dead summer blockbuster. It may lack the sophisticated storytelling in Star Trek. It makes that up with nonstop action scenes one on top of the other. 9/10
|
![]() | Last House on the Left (2009)
Buy new: $18.99 / Used from: $4.99 Like Taken, Last House centers around how far ordinarily civilized parents would go to avenge for their child. This brutal remake of Wes Craven's first feature film starts off slow, then bang. Action starts 30 minutes into the film. The tension and suspense do not let up until the credit rolls. The controversial microwave scene is awesome. 10/10
|
![]() | Trick 'r Treat
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $9.24 After 2 years of torturous delay, Trick is unjustly released straight to DVD. Trick tells four spine tingling stories taking place on one Halloween night with reappearing characters in the same fashion as Sin City/Pulp Fiction. Trick has quickly become a Halloween favorite for the legion of horror fans. 9/10
|
![]() | Orphan
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $7.96 A few laughable horror cliches aside, Orphan is really a quite entertaining chiller...the best horror film of the summer 2009. (I am not classifying District 9 as horror of course) 9/10
|
![]() | Zombieland (Ws Dub Sub Ac3 Dol)
Buy new: $20.49 A killer opening sequence (accompanied by Metallica's "For Whom the Bell Tolls") and a thrilling action packed climax put Zombieland head and shoulder above all the other Zombie related horror comedies of the past decade (Sorry, Shaun of the Dead). It is good to see the talented Woody Harrelson back on top. My advice to rumored 3D sequel is: more celebrity Zombies! 9/10
|
![]() | Dead Snow (Sub)
Buy new: $20.49 Zombie fans everywhere can all rejoice. DS is a campy and surprisingly fun B horror import that should satisfy the hardest gore hounds. It's got Nazi zombies, and loads of them. 8/10
|
![]() | My Bloody Valentine 3D (2-disc special edition)
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $4.47 MBV may lack originality. But it is a well (re)made, efficient slasher that offers copious amount of nudity, action, gore, scares, and memorable kills. 8/10
|
![]() | Jennifer's Body
Buy new: $18.99 Smart and sexy are the 2 words to describe JB. Smart and sexy script/dialog/characterization. It reminds me some parts of Carrie and Ginger Snaps. Megan Fox is so "salty." 8/10
|
![]() | Halloween II (R-Rated Version)
Buy new: $19.99 H2 is an intriguing sequel to 07 reboot. It explores 1. how the survivors from 07 reboot cope with the bloody aftermath. 2. the psychic connection between Michael & Laurie (as appropriated from H4). 3. the motive behind Michael's relentless pursue of Laurie. The transformation of Dr. Loomis from a caring healer to a media junkie is however ill conceived and poorly realized. 8/10
|
![]() | Outlander
Buy new: $13.49 / Used from: $7.25 As the DVD cover says, Outlander is "Beowulf meets Predator." It is however better than both of the last Beowulf and AVP2. Although, the film drags a bit here and there, it has plenty of emotional drama and cool flesh eating monster actions to warrant, as least, a rental. 8/10.
|
![]() | The Hangover (Unrated Two-Disc Special Edition)
Buy new: $19.99 Hands down, Hangover is 2009's best comedy. I saw it at the opening night. The entire audience laughed from the beginning to the ending credits. 10/10
|
![]() | I Love You, Man
Buy new: $16.49 / Used from: $5.45 ILYM is a light comedy looking squarely at the somewhat uncomfortable nature of male bonding as Paul Rudd's character searches for a best man at his wedding. It is this year's Forgetting Sarah Marshall, only funnier. 8/10.
|
![]() | State of Play
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $4.00 I am ordinarily no fan of political thriller. State won me over because of its engaging contemporary story, powerful performances, and many moments of Hitchcockian high tension and suspense. A few plot twists and turns may seem contrived or artificial. State held my attention for 2 straight hours. 8/10
