The warm, butter-melting voice of Gundula Janowitz will leave you longing desperately for more… so don’t miss her equally satisfying Contessa/Le Nozze di Figaro with Böhm. One of the greatest sopranos of the last - or any - century.

I much prefer Te Kanawa’s earlier 1979 interpretation to her later performance with Georg Solti. Her sense of wonder and discovery is painfully absent from the later recording, but the former finds her fascinated beyond measure! A true benchmark FLS.
Strauss: Four Last Songs, Arabella/Della Casa (Vier letzte Lieder)Strauss: Four Last Songs, Arabella/Della Casa (Vier letzte Lieder)
Buy new: $11.98 / Used from: $5.09
Although presented in the unfamiliar song-order preferred by Richard Strauss himself, Lisa Della Casa – the immortal “Arabella” - gives us a soaring, sometimes searing, altogether angelic Vier Letzte Lieder that knows no earthly bounds. A must-have FLS. Heavenly!

I understand that my next comment will be horribly unpopular with the majority of Straussians, but I personally feel that Elisabeth Schwarzkopf has been surpassed by a number of more recent sopranos… but not superceded. This classic account with George Szell at the helm should be in every serious collection. A beautiful and much-loved performance, despite my misgivings.

What a tragic loss was the early demise of Lucia Popp to the world of Classical music! Her irresistible youthful innocence matched by her profound technical prowess was simply devastating! She most certainly celebrated life – and mourned loss – in this my personal favorite performance of the Four Last Songs. Indispensable!

Miss Brewer has been roundly criticized for her Wagner interpretations (especially Isolde!), but she is no doubt one of the finest interpreters of Strauss presently before the public. Just listen to her amazing self-assurance in “Frühling”, and her absolute acceptance of the inevitable end in “Im Abendrot.” Simply superb!

The first question you will ask yourself after hearing this fabulous Finnish soprano is, “Why in the world is this ravishing voice so infrequently recorded?!” Ondine Records be warned: you have a veritable Della Casa, Popp and Te Kanawa all lovingly rolled into one! A universe of beauty awaits your ears.

Here – for instruction of what NOT to buy – we have a wonderfully gifted opera singer's total inability to grasp the felicities of German lieder. Vier Letzte Lieder is NOT opera: the list of dramatic sopranos who have failed to grasp this truth is long and illustrious! For incomparable Wagner, investigate Nina Stemme; for an FLS with poetry, elegance and style, look elsewhere.

Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $1.84
I have to admit that this disc will NOT be to everyone's liking. An unusual “Heldon Soprano” approach to Strauss’ final masterpiece that is both intriguing and highly satisfying. Passion, desperation and real fire all beautifully foiled by ravishing pianissimo and smooth, silky rubato. Sublime.
Strauss: Four Last Songs, 15 Lieder / BonneyStrauss: Four Last Songs, 15 Lieder / Bonney
Buy new: $18.98 / Used from: $7.95
An utterly captivating rendition of the Four Last Songs for soprano and solo piano. This inspiring new vision, and Barbara Bonney’s well thought-out interpretations, will leave you intrigued and satisfied beyond measure. A unique account that begs further investigation. Ground-breaking!

If you’re looking for sheer presence and a commanding lyric soprano beyond compare, than look no further than Renée Fleming! Eschenbach and the Houston Symphony are not names normally associated with great Strauss performances… until now! A truly magnificent performance to stand with the best of the very best. Mightily recommended!

A beautifully atmospheric account with Felicity Lott in heart-Breakingly beautiful voice. It must be said that Järvi’s tempos are, as always, a bit on the quick side, but no matter; Lott’s commanding presence and her sheer musicality will leave you standing and, yes, applauding! A true gem that should NOT to be missed!

With Masur’s deliberate tempos and Norman’s smooth and silky delivery, we are immediately submerged in the depths of Strauss’ last goodbye to life, his beloved female voice and a loving farewell to all the future generations of Strauss-lovers that Strauss would never know. Magnifique!
Richard Strauss - Ein Heldenleben, Four Last Songs / Auger, PrevinRichard Strauss - Ein Heldenleben, Four Last Songs / Auger, Previn by Hermann Hesse
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $4.30
If ever there was a great (and woefully under-recorded!) singer of German Lieder, Arleen Augér must be rated as one of the five best in history! You will never hear a more wonderfully “mature” performance of these songs; sumptuous and life affirming in every respect. The VPO play magnificently and Previn - for once in his life - actually gets the tempos right!
