![]() | Southern Sun/Ready Steady Go by Paul Oakenfold
Buy used from: $14.97 This track is still probably my single favorite track of all time. The first time I heard the Tiesto remix (the best one), I just felt swept away.
![]() | Live At Innercity by DJ Tiesto
Buy used from: $43.99 This is my favorite Tiesto mix, hands down. It always gets me movin'. This was the pinnacle of the trance scene, before it (and Tiesto himself) became so commercial and, at times, a cheesy caricature of its former self.
![]() | In Search of Sunrise, Vol. 3: Panama by DJ Tiësto
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $38.03 My personal fav from Tiesto's ISOS series, this one has some of my hands down favorite tracks and I get chills each time I listen to it.
![]() | Revolution by DJ Tiësto
Buy used from: $32.89 An often overlooked but classic double-disc mix by the trancemaster.
![]() | Black Hole: Special Collector's Edition, Vol. 1 by DJ Ton TB
Buy new: $23.99 / Used from: $15.00 This 2 disc collection includes hits from Black Hole Records, which consists of Tiesto (as in, the Magik series) and his collaborators. Disc 1: DJ compilation (mixed by DJ Ton T.B.) Disc 2: collection of epic tracks in their unmixed, original forms. Tiesto's remix of Eternal Voices=perfect breaks and house-styled vocals.

![]() | Intensify by Way Out West
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $5.53 This is still one of my favorites - it's got such great funky, danceable beats, breaks and vocals. A must have!
![]() | Don't Look Now by Way Out West
Buy used from: $43.50 Not quite what "Intensify" is, but a great album nonetheless. Buy it just for the first two vocal tracks, as well as my personal fav, the jungle/DnB pounding "Fear".
![]() | Gabriel & Dresden by Gabriel & Dresden
Buy used from: $27.98 Gabriel and Dresden never seem disappoint me. This is a pithy artist album I can listen to again and again. Other than the fiercely popular "Tracking Treasure Down" and "Dangerous Power", the track "Closer" is my personal fav and a real mover.
![]() | Bloom by Gabriel & Dresden
Buy new: $31.99 / Used from: $12.94 This is a DJ compilation/mix, but has many artist tracks by G&D. The energy is not overt or overpowering, but sustains you through each disc with pumping bass, pulsing beats, and catchy riffs. It reminds me of Sasha's work, evolving slowly, methodically, and ultimately giving the desired effect.
![]() | Airdrawndagger by Sasha
Buy used from: $11.11 If you don't own this yet, what's wrong with you? This is dance music for your brain as much as your feet.
![]() | Xpander by Sasha
Buy used from: $15.00 Classic Sasha - timeless track.
![]() | Involver by Sasha
Buy used from: $6.85 Okay, this disc holds a special place in my life, introducing me to Ableton Live. It is also a classic, so musically diverse for a house/trance artist and a great chilled groove disc to play for your friends that don't exactly like 'techno'. Very smart music and expertly mixed.
![]() | Never, Never, Land by UNKLE
Buy used from: $9.90 What can I say? James Lavelle is the man.
![]() | Psyence Fiction by U.N.K.L.E.
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $2.91 James Lavelle and DJ Shadow showing why they are the best.
![]() | Private Press by DJ Shadow
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.25 Probably my favorite Shadow LP, it's also garnered some commercial success with tracks like Six Days.
![]() | Moon Safari by Air
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.10 This album is like the Beatles' white album. Even if you don't like electronica or dance music, you will love this album. Such a classic. Will chill you to the bones and sooth your soul at the same time.
![]() | Kid A by Radiohead
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $5.48 Radiohead? On a dance/electronica list? Well, if you've never heard Idiotique, take a listen and you tell me. Other than that track, this album, along with anything Radiohead is musical magic.
![]() | Homogenic by Björk
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $1.45 Again, what is Bjork doing on this list? Well, Homegenic is her most electronically influenced album and has some stellar tracks for the tech-heads. Plus, Bjork is probably my favorite female vocalist - her unique voice and vocal style is almost unmatched and has a way of both giving you chills and making you want to dance.
![]() | Movement in Still Life by BT
Buy used from: $25.95 BT often gets confused as a trance "DJ", but he is such a talented musician/producer that has a passion for combining music and technology. This album moves effortlessly (in a "blended", not mixed, state), from breaks and hip hip to trance with unbridled momentum. This album's cut of Dreaming is my fav of the 100s of cuts out there.
![]() | Ima by BT
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $2.50 BT's first work and a defining moment in the formation of trance (esp. dream trance). Blue Skies was one of my first introductions to trance and therefore has a special place in my collection.
![]() | Clubber's Guide to 2005 by Various Artists
Buy used from: $6.48 The second disc is pure, unadulterated vocal trance gold. The first disc is okay, but has the more of the house-styled tracks.
![]() | Dream Dance, Vol. 41 by Various Artists
Buy used from: $21.30 Any of the Dream Dance series will give you a mixed bag. It's nice to get the original, usually radio friendly, tracks that you hear in the biggest mixes at the moment. Some tracks will be epic, others cheesy or blase. In general, anything from Dream Dance is worth the import price - anything from Water Music Dance (label) is of similar style and quality.
![]() | Winter by DT8
Buy used from: $59.99 Wow, what a great vocal trance track that isn't cheesy at all and just floats you along but also has a dark, sexy side
![]() | Best of by Milk Inc
Definitely a guilty pleasure, Milk Inc. are one of those groups that epitomize euro vocal trance that dominates European dance radio. Not for everyone, but if you appreciate catchy, poppy, vocal trance, this pick offers a wide selection.
![]() | Some Things by Lasgo
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $1.63 Lasgo's Some Things is another guilty pleasure of the vocal trance/pop genre, but the more I listen to this album, the more I really appreciate its quality and depth. It's not just for the kiddies!
![]() | Loops From the Bergerie by Swayzak
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $2.29 I wonder what Patrick Swayze thinks of this group? Whatever the name, these lush breaks and beats are a perfect respite from bangin', redundant trance.
![]() | Himawari by Swayzak
Buy used from: $2.77 I love the cover of this album, and the music is glorious, too, especially pineapple spongecake.
![]() | Discovery by Daft Punk
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $3.18 I think I'd love any group that goes around costumed as LED-expressive robots, and no one really knows what they look like without their technological guise. But this album is funky and pop-friendly and I defy anyone to sit still listening to it.
![]() | Kittenz & Thee Glitz by Felix da Housecat
Buy used from: $0.04 For those that like 80s inspired Electro, Felix is a god and this album is his benchmark. As a plus, I like Miss Kitten's odd, robotesque vocal style.
![]() | Orbital 2 by Orbital
Buy new: $13.96 / Used from: $5.50 Orbital was there at the beginning of dance music's rebirth in the early 90s. The epic track "Halcyon and On and On" was used through film in the mid-90s (think of the opening scenes in Hackers) and is still relevant today.
![]() | Reverence by Faithless
Buy used from: $0.95 This is another classic from the early/mid 90s that garnered some recognition in the States after hitting big in the UK and European scene. Still one of my favorite tracks, both because of Maxi Jazz's vocal style and its influence on my subsequent musical taste, is "Insomnia".
![]() | A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular by Hooverphonic
Buy used from: $1.60 Anything Hooverphonic will please the chill/trip-hop crowd.
![]() | Dummy by Portishead
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $4.97 Both Portishead's Dummy and eponymous albums are nearly unmatched when it comes to trip-hop magic and ethereal (and even sometimes creepy or off-key) vocals and creative breaks/samples. Along with Massive Attack and Tricky, these works were heavily influencial on the trip-hop and electronica evolution in the 90s.
![]() | Polydistortion by GusGus
Buy used from: $0.45 Iceland has nurtured some creative musical talents (a la Bjork and Sigur Ros), and Gus Gus is another great example.
![]() | Melody A.M. by Röyksopp
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.65 Royksopp is an exemplar of quirky Scandanavian electronic music, and this disc has some classic, catchy tunes for the masses and the dancefloor, including Eple, So Easy, Poor Leno and the remixes of Remind Me.
![]() | Tri-State by Above & Beyond
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $12.70 The trio known as Above and Beyond are indeed kings in the realm of popular trance, and their first artist album was much anticipated. It falls a little short for me--not exactly what I expected (which was epic), but it's still a great album.
![]() | Faith in the Future by Überzone
Buy used from: $0.98 Seminal breaks album, Uberzone is old skool and still some of the best electronic music has to offer. Classic!
![]() | Phantom Theory by Futureshock
Buy used from: $2.84 Fun house music - great overall album
![]() | Freefall by Nu NRG
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $19.49 Every trance album should sound like this and have as much energy - beautiful piece of work
