![]() | Buckingham Solo by Tift Merritt
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $7.05 The songbird Tift Merritt's voice is so pure that it leaves you--or, at least, me--besotted. This hypnotic live set, recorded in England, is Tift sans band, and features renditions of songs from her sublime 2008 "Another Country" album (my fave: "Broken"), classics from her past and a gorgeous cover of George Harrison's "I Live for You." Don't pass it by.
![]() | Under The Covers: Vol. 2
Buy new: $14.99 The second outing from Sid & Susie (Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs) spotlights songs of the '70s. The selection is hit-or-miss, but when it hits, it's a lot of fun, esp. "All the Young Dudes" and "You're So Vain." I recommend the download version, which adds 10 bonus tracks - Susie singing "Dreaming" is a dream in and of itself, and "I Wanna Be Sedated" and "Baby Blue" are sweet, too.
![]() | Bible Belt by Diane Birch
Buy new: $7.99 / Used from: $6.41 My favorite album of the year, thus far. Diane Birch's debut blends bits of Carole King, Laura Nyro and the Dixie Flyers into a delectible whole. Her voice is positively wondrous, and the songs (she wrote 'em all) are guaranteed to percolate through the head and heart - especially "Valentino," "Fools," "Nothing but a Miracle," "Rise Up" and "Mirror Mirror."
![]() | My One and Only Thrill by Melody Gardot
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $8.96 An absolute stunner - leaps and bounds better than her first, which (as evident from its inclusion of this list) I found utterly addictive. "Baby I'm a Fool," "Your Heart Is as Black as Night," "Our Love Is Easy" and "My One and Only Thrill" conjure Peggy Lee circa Black Coffee - her smoky, sultry vocals fill the soul. I love it. (She's even better in concert - go see her!)
![]() | California Years (Dig) by Jill Sobule
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $8.74 This album is filled with tunes that ricochet through the mind with a gentle ferocity - the funny bravado of "Nothing to Prove" is one example. Others: "San Francisco" and "Sweetheart," both of which are hypnotic, "Where Is Bobby Gentry," which tells the story of the "Ode to Billie Joe" singer, and the mournful, self-pitying "League of Failures," which quotes Neil Young.
![]() | Fortress Round My Heart by Ida Maria
Buy new: $8.99 / Used from: $1.25 A phenomenal debut that's utterly addictive. The Norwegian rocker channels Blondie, the Pretenders and Nico, among others. "Oh My God" and "I Like You So Much Better When You're Naked" are two highlights; "Morning Light," "Stella," "Queen of the World" and "In the End" are four more.
![]() | Two Suns by Bat for Lashes
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $6.43 An atmospheric, intoxicating outing from the British artiste Bat for Lashes (Natasha Khan) - think Enya meets Kate Bush. The lead single "Daniel" is dream-like and dream-inducing, conjuring (as BBC News noted recently) Stevie Nicks at her witchy best. "Two Planets" and "Traveling Woman" are likewise hypnotic - as are Khan's vocals throughout.
![]() | Fork In The Road (CD/DVD) by Neil Young
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $5.54 It's safe to say this isn't Neil's best album. However, the songs "Just Singing a Song," "Light a Candle" and the humorous title track make it well worth the price of admission. The rocker "Johnny Magic" is solid, too. The DVD is a welcome bonus, featuring videos of the first three songs I mentioned and an in-concert performance of the Beatles' "A Day in the Life."
![]() | Pretenders II by The Pretenders
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $13.76 "Message of Love" and "Talk of the Town" rank amongst the Pretenders' best songs - easily the equal of anything on their classic debut. As a whole, though, this album is a solid, not spectacular, affair. The main reason to pick it up, and the reason I recommend it, is the bonus disc, which features a 1981 live set that is, in a word, revelatory.
![]() | Bossa Nova Stories by Eliane Elias
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $7.77 There's no better way to warm up a cold winter's night (or day) than listening to this breezy set, which conjures early summer at its finest. Eliane is an impeccable pianist and wondrous singer, the very definition of "enticing" - check out "Girl from Ipanema," "Chega de Saudade" and "Superwoman" (the Stevie Wonder song) if you don't believe me.
![]() | Sugar Mountain-Live At Canterbury House 1968 (CD/DVD-A) by Neil Young
Buy new: $17.99 / Used from: $10.13 An archival Neil Young release that is, in a word, stupendous. It's a solo acoustic concert from 1968 Ann Arbor - the show that gave us "Sugar Mountain" - and features a mix of Buffalo Springfield songs with new tunes. Highlights abound, but the three I'll single out are "Expecting to Fly," "Last Trip to Tulsa" and an utterly hypnotic "Old Laughing Lady." Great stuff.
![]() | How to Walk Away by Juliana Hatfield
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $3.78 What needs to be said? It's Juliana! Okay, here's a little more: it's essentially a 10-song meditation on parting ways, but far from a downer. Features smart production, lush vocals, and Juliana's typically wry humor ("Just Lust") and pathos ("Such a Beautiful Girl"). My No. 1 Album for 2008.
![]() | CSNY/Deja Vu Live by Crosby Stills Nash & Young
Buy new: $16.99 / Used from: $2.91 You have to hand it to CSNY. At a time when the nation (and their audience) was split over the Iraq War, they toured in support of Neil's antiwar "Living with War" album anyway. While they were met with boos at some venues, as evidenced by this set they also turned in damn fine performances. Highlights include Crosby's "What Are There Names?," Nash's "Military Madness" and Neil's LwW songs.
![]() | From Crayons to Perfume: The Best of Lulu by Lulu
Buy new: $13.96 / Used from: $4.17 If all you know of Lulu is "To Sir with Love," give this one-CD compilation a spin. It's surprisingly ... addictive. In addition to "To Sir with Love," my favorites include her cover of "Shout," the soulful "Oh Me, Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)" and "Hum a Song (From Your Heart)," and the Bowie-produced "Watch That Man" and "The Man Who Fell to Earth."
![]() | Worrisome Heart by Melody Gardot
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $6.99 This is an absolutely beautiful album - Gardot's halfway between Peggy Lee and Norah Jones, if that makes sense. The title song and "Sweet Memory" are sublime.
![]() | Rattlin' Bones by Kasey Chambers
Buy new: $28.98 / Used from: $17.83 I'd say this is the best album Gram & Emmylou never made, but that hyperbole doesn't do "Rattlin' Bones" any favors. Instead, I'll state that it's a sheer delight and that Kasey's and Shane's voices, solo and together, flow through the soul like few others. Highlights include the title cut, "Monkey on a Wire," "The House That Never Was," "Wildflower," "Jackson Hole" and "Your Day Will Come."
![]() | All I Intended to Be by Emmylou Harris
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.98 There's more superlatives for this than space permitted me here. Thematically, Emmy explores mortality. Musically, she conjures country music's rich history while remaining firmly rooted in the present. Highlights include "Broken Man's Lament," "Gold," "How Could She Sing the Wildwood Flower," "All That You Have Is Your Soul," "Old Five and Dimers Like Me" and "Not Enough."
![]() | 19 by Adele
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $9.16 This almost sounds like a lost Amy Winehouse album - she and Adele share the same vocal timbre and inflections. But the comparisons end there. The delicate "Daydreamer" is absolutely beautiful, and "Chasing Pavements," already a hit in England, should be a hit here. Other highlights include "Cold Shoulder" and "Crazy for You." The bonus disc is a delight, too.
![]() | Black Coffee by Peggy Lee
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $8.99 Here's an archival release that sounds as fresh today as it must've in 1953. Peggy Lee absolutely smolders, especially on the title tune, "Gee Baby (Ain't I Good to You)," "A Woman Left Alone with the Blues" and "You're My Thrill." Other highlights: "I've Got You Under My Skin," "When the World Was Young" and "Love Me or Leave Me."
![]() | Rockferry by Duffy
Buy new: $9.99 / Used from: $5.85 She's been compared to Petula Clark, Dusty Springfield and Amy Winehouse, but I hear another similarity: Lulu circa "To Sir with Love." That's not a knock. The title track, "Rockferry," could well have been recorded in 1967 - it's timeless. Other highlights include "Warwick Avenue," "Syrup & Honey," "Stepping Stone" and "Distant Dreamer."
![]() | Another Country by Tift Merritt
Buy new: $15.99 / Used from: $1.15 A sublime, charming album that's reminiscent of prime Emmylou Harris. Highlights include "Broken" ("I think I will break/but I mend"), "Hopes Too High" (echoes the oft-overlooked, third Flying Burrito Bros. LP w/Rick Roberts), and especially "I Know What I'm Looking for Now," about achieving clarity of purpose. My No. 2 Album of '08.
![]() | Dark Fades into the Light by Sandrine
Buy new: $17.98 / Used from: $0.93 I heard this percolating in a B&N cafe and bought it five minutes later. Sandrine, it turns out, is an Australian singer-songwriter. Her music's an atmospheric, hypnotic pop blend that goes down oh-so-easy, and lingers long after the CD's over. Highlights: "Let the Love," "Love and Pain," "Save Your Kisses," "Eleven," "Deep Freeze," "Sea of Love" and "Late Night Insomnia."
![]() | Live at the BBC by Maria McKee
Buy new: $21.99 / Used from: $24.96 This archival release is, for me, like going back to church. Drawn from live sets in '91 and '93, it includes such Lone Justice classics as "Shelter" & "I Found Love" alongside equally compelling songs from her first two solo albums, including "Am I the Only One," "Breathe" and "My Girlhood Among the Outlaws." For Little Diva fans (and others, in my opinion), it's a must.
![]() | As I Am by Alicia Keys
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $2.11 Alicia's grown leaps and bounds since her first CD. At its best, "As I Am" echoes the likes of Marvin Gaye and the Spinners - prime 1970s soul, in other words. My fave track of late, as much as for how she sings it as anything, is "Teenage Love Affair." It's positively infectious - as is the CD as a whole.
![]() | Chrome Dreams II CD/DVD Special Edition by Neil Young
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $5.90 In 1996 I spent $60 on a bootleg of an '88 Neil & the Bluenotes concert for two songs: the 18-minute "Sixty to Zero" (which became Freedoms "Crime in the City") and the equally verbose, 18-minute "Ordinary People." Here, Neil finally lets loose w/the latter (a must hear), plus "Box Car" from '89 - and others, I suspect, that didn't have a proper home. In short: a ramshackle set that grows on you.
![]() | Magic by Bruce Springsteen
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $0.91 An anti-war vibe reverberates through many of the songs, but their strengths lie not in the message, but the stories they tell. Highlights include the frenzied "Radio Nowhere," the Beach Boys-esque "Girls in Their Summer Clothes," the title track, "Last to Die" and "Long Walk Home." My No. 2 album of '07.
![]() | Country Mouse City House by Josh Rouse
Buy new: $13.98 / Used from: $4.64 I was lucky enough to see Rouse perform most of these songs in Philly the night before the CD's release. It was a great set - and this is a great album. Echoes the Beach Boys, Paul McCartney and Paul Weller - he's got a way w/melodies and his lyrics are at turns wry, whimsical and from the heart. Highlights: "Hollywood Bass Player," "Nice to Fit In," "London Bridges" and "Snowy."
![]() | Just Roll Tape: April 26th, 1968 by Stephen Stills
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $7.48 This is, in a word, tremendous. In April '68, a 23-year-old Stephen Stills slipped a recording engineer a few hundred bucks and, w/acoustic guitar in hand, laid down demos for "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "Helplessly Hoping" and "Wooden Ships" (released w/CSN the following spring) as well as songs from his early solo LPs and a few unreleased (until now) gems. Five stars, easy.
![]() | The Best of the Capitol Masters: 90th Birthday Edition by Les Paul & Mary Ford
Buy new: $10.99 / Used from: $8.59 After watching the American Masters documentary on Les Paul, I came away wanting to learn (and hear) more, so ordered myself this one-CD collection. It has most of his hits with Mary Ford (and what a voice she has!), plus the guitar-crazed "Lover." My faves: "How High the Moon," "I'm Sitting on Top of the World" and "Vaya con Dios (May God Be with You)."
![]() | The Essential Paul Simon (2 CD/DVD) by Paul Simon
Buy new: $26.99 / Used from: $18.94 This best-of just arrived today, so I'm still digesting it - haven't watched the DVD yet - but this much I can say: it's great ... includes "Duncan," "Loves Me Like a Rock," "Me and Julio," "50 Ways," "Slip Slidin' Away," "Still Crazy," "Late in the Evening" and my fave Paul Simon song, "Graceland." What more can you ask for? About my only criticism - it's not in chronological order.
![]() | The Concert in Central Park by Simon & Garfunkel
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $1.99 I remember watching this when it was first broadcast on HBO in the early '80s. I was 16, and it was my introduction to S&G. I bought their Greatest Hits LP shortly thereafter (an exc. collection, by the way), but never picked up this set. My mistake. It's positively magical. Highlights: "America," "Late in the Evening," "Bridge over Troubled Water, "Old Friends" & "The Sound of Silence."
![]() | Memory Almost Full [Deluxe Limited Edition] by Paul McCartney
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $1.76 Since Tug of War in '82, almost every new Macca album brings reviews saying it's his best in years. Truth is, each of those studio sets have been good-to-great affairs, but this (like Tug of War, IMO) is genius - especially the mini-suite (from "Vintage Clothes" to "The End of the End"). The 2nd disc features three cool tunes and an insightful, 26-minute commentary by Paul about the album.
![]() | Sittin' in a Tree... by Juliana Hatfield
Buy new: $8.98 / Used from: $4.07 The alt.country band Frank Smith offers superb backup on this six-song EP, which features banjo, pedal steel, feedback, Juliana's soul-consuming vocals and (as always) her whimsical, wry lyrics. My faves: "364," "Don't Wanna Be the One," "A Beer and a Shot," "If Only We Were Dogs," "Kitten" and "On Your Mind," a wistful song about a love lost but not forgotten.
![]() | Momento by Bebel Gilberto
Buy new: $11.99 / Used from: $5.82 Filled with catchy melodies and lilting rhythms, this is an intoxicating affair. Bebel's vocals, though primarily in Portugese, communicate from the heart. Thus far my fave tracks are the title cut; "Bring Back the Love"; and "Tranquilo."
![]() | Betcha Bottom Dollar by Puppini Sisters
Buy new: $12.99 / Used from: $4.21 A fun collection that doesn't want to leave the CD player. These modern-day Andrews Sisters are at their best covering Kate Bush's "Wuthering Heights," Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" and Blondie's "Heart of Glass." Other highlights: "Mr. Sandman," "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy (from Company C)," "Sway" and the drop-dead gorgeous "In the Mood."
![]() | Late December by Maria McKee
Buy new: $14.99 / Used from: $7.10 A sheer sonic delight that, while reminiscent of Bowie, Queen and Springsteen, is 100-percent pure Maria - madcap, eccentric and addictive. Check out the finger-snapping title tune, "No Other Way to Love You," "My First Night without You" and "Starving Pretty," in which she sings "lean on me, baby." I'll definitely lean on this CD for a good while. It's my No. 1 album of '07.
![]() | Children Running Through by Patty Griffin
Buy new: $15.98 / Used from: $8.58 If, at times, it seems like I deal in hyperbole ... well, this album surpasses any superlatives even I could come up with. Simply put, it's filled with strong songs and even stronger performances. My faves: "Trapeze" (w/Emmylou on backing vocals), "Up to the Mountain (MLK Song)" and the mesmerizing "I Don't Ever Give Up." My No. 2 album for '07.
![]() | Living with War - "In the Beginning" by Neil Young
Buy new: $24.98 / Used from: $8.96 Originally released in April '06, Living with War was, in my estimation, a timely, five-star affair. Sad to say, it remains as timely now as then. This "special edition" (from Dec. '06) contains the raw mixes; and strips away the 100-voice choir. The result: a more immediate, powerful set. Highlights include "Families," "Flags of Freedom" and "Lookin' for a Leader."
![]() | Live at Massey Hall (CD/DVD) by Neil Young
Buy new: $22.99 / Used from: $14.45 A crystal-clear recording of Neil at his acoustic/folkie best, circa 1971. Features a fair number of songs that were new to the audience at the time - and, something tells me, will still be new to some listeners now. Either/or, whether you're a longtime fan or just getting into Neil, this a must.
![]() | The Carter Family: 1927-1934 by The Carter Family
Buy new: $25.99 / Used from: $21.89 The movie "Walk the Line" opened my ears to June Carter. She, in turn, led me to her mother, uncle and aunt. I'd argue that the past, present and future of American music is captured here, in five discs and 125 songs. (To learn more about the Carters, seek out the exc. bio "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone?".)
