Colorful Guide to USAF MiG Killers!5
Air Force fighters didn't do well against North Vietnam's Air Force. Poorly performing missiles and inadequate ACM robbed many crews of kills. This 2005 Schiffer volume is a photo guide to the 100-odd Phantom and Thunderchief aircraft credited with victories over VPAF MiG-17s, -19s and -21s. Although it's overpriced at $59.95, Vietnam air war buffs will want to add a copy to their collection.

One hundred thirteen USAF F-4s and F-105s killed MiGs. McCarthy's book presents photos of 106 of that total, which is quite an accomplishment. About 80% are in color. Each MiG killer entry includes a short - sometimes only one or two sentences - description of the kill. Modellers should be forewarned: only about 60% of the pix show the aircraft in Vietnam War camo and markings. Almost all the remaining snaps show the aircraft in postwar garb, repainted for display, etc.

If MiG killer aircraft are an interest, this is your book. If you want detailed, yank-and-bank info on the actual kills along with shots of MiG-killer crews, check out Peter Davies' two volumes for Osprey instead.

F-4 AND F-105 MIG KILLERS delivers just what it promises: lots of photos of Phantom and Thud MiG killers. If the price-tag doesn't put you off, by all means get a copy. Recommended.

Note: This reviewer is putting together a book on U.S. NAVY MIG KILLERS OF THE VIETNAM WAR and would appreciate hearing from anyone with photographs of MiG-killing A-1s, A-4s, F-4s and F-8s.
