A Great Portable Gallery
The first time I picked up the original "Art of Modern Rock" I was blown away - I'd never seen art like that, so vibrant, so original, so raw and so fascinating. I had to pick it up - despite the fact that it was 1) Expensive and 2) really, really huge. Later on, I ran into this book in the bookstore and was additionally impressed. Art of Modern Rock Mini #1: A-Z serves as a great companion volume to the original, larger Art of Modern Rock and can also stand on its own feet.
The concept behind this book is pretty simple - it is a sort of cheeky alphabet in which each letter stands for a particular theme: "A" for instance, stands for alien, for example, "B" is for bunny, "M" stands for metal, and so on. Some of these are pretty original and fun. Each letter (there are several entries for each letter, generally) is accompanied by at least one poster illustrating the theme. I would estimate that about 60% of the posters included in this book are re-used from the original "Art of Modern Rock" while the remainder are new for this volume, or are images that were reproduced very small in the first volume and finally get a full airing here. However, don't be put off by this - most of the posters that are re-used are among my favorites from the first volume, and the new stuff is quite amazing. Artists like Kozik, Coop, Scrojo, and Derek Hess are well-represented. Also - despite this volume's portable size, don't fret about whether or not the posters are too tiny: they all look tremendous, the printing and paper quality are superb, and in a strange way, some of the posters look better in a smaller format, allowing the eye to really take everything in all at once.
If you loved the original, mammoth Art of Modern Rock, or want a nice little gallery of superb rock posters, this is surely the book for you. Don't hesitate.
