Bastard out of Carolina: (Plume Essential Edition)Bastard out of Carolina: (Plume Essential Edition) by Dorothy Allison
Buy new: $10.85 / Used from: $6.50
The book is ten times better than the movie. It still holds the title of the only book that has made me cry.
LauraLaura by Larry Watson
Buy new: $22.95 / Used from: $0.01
We've heard it before. A guy obsessed with some woman who keeps stringing him along. But Watson's treatment of the settings and of his main characters is amazing. This one holds the title of the only book I've read twice for pleasure. I read it again because I still wanted to be taken to that place again.
Bodega Dreams: A NovelBodega Dreams: A Novel by Ernesto Quinonez
Buy new: $10.08 / Used from: $2.39
This is the first book that I read for pleasure and was so captivated that I flew right through it in a couple of days and promptly handed it over to friends and family to read as well
Rat BohemiaRat Bohemia by Sarah Schulman
Buy new: $13.46 / Used from: $3.17
Good Book. NYC. '80s. Gay. Politics. Go Read.
The Things They CarriedThe Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien
Buy new: $10.17 / Used from: $7.98
I'm not particularly in to war books, but this one was great.
Black Like MeBlack Like Me by John Howard Griffin
Buy new: $9.89 / Used from: $4.75
Well if the book description doesn't get you to peek inside, I don't know what will. White guy in 1959 darkens his skin (with make up AND chemicals) and takes a trip through the south posing as a black guy so that he can better understand what black people deal with and hopefully tell the story of experienced black plight through a voice that white people will listen to. TRUE STORY.
Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (P.S.)Kitchen Confidential Updated Ed: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly (P.S.) by Anthony Bourdain
Buy new: $9.32 / Used from: $4.87
This book has definitely changed the way I look at restaurants. Even if you know the seedy underbelly of the restaurant world, Bourdain's dry wit makes you want him to tell you about it. Kind of like when you and a friend experience something funny together but you just let your friend tell the story because you know they are going to tell it way funnier.
Assata: An Autobiography (Lawrence Hill & Co.)Assata: An Autobiography (Lawrence Hill & Co.) by Assata Shakur
Buy new: $9.33 / Used from: $5.99
One of the most interesting figures in the Black Power movement, Assata Shakur is and apparently always has been daring. It is just fun and exciting to read about people who are just made of pure nerve.
Angela Davis: An AutobiographyAngela Davis: An Autobiography by Angela Y. Davis
Buy used from: $5.99
Another, but completely different, figure from the Black Power Movement. Angela Davis's sheer intelligence is amazing, but her ability to use that intelligence to enlightened and lead others is the real story here. What is really striking is this je ne sais quoi quality that keeps your nose in the book ready to follow Angela wherever she goes.
