Customer Reviews
What happened to the tapes?
I enjoyed Spanish for Gringos Level 1 very much. The book and the cassette tapes were really great. I found level 2 in a local store and snatched it up.
The book itself is more of the same, which is great.
However, the tapes are really BAD in comparison. The original tapes were done by Bill Harvey himself.
I can identify Bill's hand in the writing of the script for the tapes, but they are performed by some elevator music DJ. This guy does not capture Bill's "life" or sense of humor. He also does not pronounce the words as distinctly as Bill does on the first set of tapes. I'm very disappointed in this aspect of the set. I miss Bill on the tapes tremendously.
Spanish for Gringos: Level Two
Level Two is a real disappointment after using Level One. The engaging voice of the original teacher is gone and is replaced by two lesser voices. One of the voices is difficult to understand, which defeats the purpose of an audio lesson. In addition, the dreaded language lab tone is added in replace of the simple pause. Finally, the festive Latin music is gone. Overall, a disappointment and not as well done as Level One.
An excellent, reader-friendly guide for learning Spanish
I want to learn Spanish because my daughter-in-law is from Guadalajara. I also want to learn the language because I find it useful to know in everyday life. I've purchased many books to help me get started. Bill Harvey's Spanish for Gringos Level Two is one of the two best. (The other is The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning Spanish). Harvey's book is fun to use and provides an excellent framework to build on. He does a supurb job "paso por paso" (step by step) of making the learning process easy for us "gringos." At its affordable price this book is an excellent value.
