Attention is also given to court procedures following the institution of formal proceedings including rights to counsel, to jury trial, to compel the testimony of witnesses in the defendent's favor, etc. The book not only states the formal, "on the books" rules for each country, but discusses the extent to which the police really abide by the rules as well as, in countries with a code of criminal procedure, how court decisions have supplemented or changed the rules.
