Probably one of the best overall looks at the LBH campaign. Uses excellent sources more recent to classic.

Pennington has had a long study and his theory about Custer's demise may not be popular but is certainly possible. Here he attacks the testimony of Reno, Benteen and Wallace (the time keeper).

The author pulls no punches in this well written book with strong opinions (as the title implies). Benteen and Reno are taken down in Unger's analysis of the LBH battle.

Definitely for the hard corp LBH historian. Darling demonstrates that Benteen went no more than a mile out of way further than Custer and that the terrain he encountered was no worse.

Thom Hatch is a well known western writer who provides a detailed catlogue of information about General Custer. Highlights not only Custer but the principal members of his command.

Wonderful collection of Walter Camp's notes with LBH participants anf other western notables. Camp reserched and found many numerous sites at the turn of the century and had a particular interest in the LBH.

Classic historian Brinstool writes chapters features the accounts of participants at the LBH.

This is Pennington's theory of what happened to Custer's battalion that caused or led to it's fracturing reulting in total loss. pennington takes the unromantic view of Custer's demise and his battalion's last hour.

Charles Kuhlman is another classic historiann who had his own view of what happened to Custer and it is a little different. He also concentrates on the interpratation of Custer's orders and failure, in Terry's view, that he wait for Terry and the infantry.

The key preliminary battle before the LBH. Mangum, former Supt. of the LBH, does a detaled account of Crooks battle against the Sioux and Cheyenne just a week before Custer. Crook's leaving the field has major consequences to Terry and Custer.

This book semed to jump start another look at Custer in the 1980's after his post Vietnam War legacy. Connell does a good job, objectively, detailing the personality issues and lays out the conflict quite well.

Utley's classic account on the life of Custer. Utley added a revised chapter on the Little Bighorn that addresses some of the newer discoveries on the field.

Excellent book that captures key testimony in the Reno Court of Inquiry.

Dr. Fox, resident of Hardin, was part of the archealogy team that went over the LBH after the 80s fire. Covers the fascinating findings and has a interesting view on what Custer's battalion was up to. Dr. Fox has very strong opinions and some are controversial. A very worthwhile book.

A revionist's look at Custer Tony Horwitz style, interpeting the man while visiting his historic locations. The author lacks an appreciation for the mystery of what happened to Custer's battalion and a perspective from that period but has a healthy emplathy for the plains Native Americans.
