Quintet: 1949Quintet: 1949 by George Shearing
Buy new: $16.98 / Used from: $11.99
"Old God Shearing!" In the novel Shearing shows up a couple of times but the coolest part is where Sal and Dean go see him at Birdland on page 127. Of course Shearing has some great later recordings with Nat Cole and Mel Torme but this is a batch of shear shear goodness.
Settin' the Pace (Mini Lp Sleeve)Settin' the Pace (Mini Lp Sleeve) by Dexter Gordon
Buy new: $25.98 / Used from: $12.65
Ridiculously good recordings from the L.A. days . Lots of superb sax duels here with Dexter and Wardell Gray. "The Hunt" is mentioned twice in the novel (p. 112 and 126) but you also get "The Chase" which is even more lively.

Bunk and the New Orleans Revival 1942-1947Bunk and the New Orleans Revival 1942-1947 by Bunk Johnson
Buy new: $19.99 / Used from: $13.99
I have no idea what the Chicken Jazz n' Gumbo Radio show was (page 140) but I'll bet they played Bunk Johnson. Everyone should have some New Orleans jazz pre-Dr. John and this is pretty essential.
Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945Town Hall, New York City, June 22, 1945 by Dizzy Gillespie
Buy new: $13.99 / Used from: $10.49
Ok so it's not mentioned in the novel but this is too good to be left off the list. Plus Sal is in New York in 1947 and he digs bop the whole book. Kerouac would have known about this show. This is just pure goodness from start to finish.

"Gator Tail" !!!
The Modern Red NorvoThe Modern Red Norvo by Red Norvo

Page 220 -- "Congo Blues" featuring Parker and Gillespie. This is the record that Janet breaks over Dean's head. The sound is not so good on this recording but so what?
Jukebox Hits 1946-1954Jukebox Hits 1946-1954 by Wynonie Harris
Buy new: $31.98 / Used from: $5.98
Don't know much about Wynonie Harris except the BBQ place we go to here in town has a picture of him on the menu. I like the samples here and I may have to make a purchase.
Jukebox Hits: 1942-1951Jukebox Hits: 1942-1951 by Lucky Millinder
Buy new: $14.98 / Used from: $27.45
Page 272, "Dean and I bought cokes and shoved nickels in the jukebox and played Wynonie Blues Harris and Lionel Hampton and Lucky Millinder and jumped."
El Rey del MamboEl Rey del Mambo by Perez Prado
Buy new: $9.98 / Used from: $6.50
Mambo! "he came back with a stack of records mostly by Perez Prado" (page 287).
Ellington UptownEllington Uptown by Duke Ellington
Buy new: $6.99 / Used from: $24.78
"Harlem Suite" is the key track here. Ellington played this at his Metropolitan Opera performance in NYC -- the one that Sal attends at the very end of the novel (see the next to last page)
The Jack Kerouac CollectionThe Jack Kerouac Collection by Jack Kerouac
Buy new: $44.99 / Used from: $24.99
You'll definitely want this sooner rather than later. Check out the reading of On the Road. If you can ignore Steve Allen's piano, it's good stuff. Kerouac reads from the end of On the Road on live television and mixes in a little Visions of Cody.
On the Road: 50th Anniversary EditionOn the Road: 50th Anniversary Edition by Jack Kerouac
Buy new: $16.47 / Used from: $9.98
Forget the music if you haven't read the novel. Ignore the so-called scroll edition too. Until it comes out as a scroll just go with the version that's been satisfying everyone and their brother for the past half century.
